Any open source host solution for private users?

Situation: we live in europe, there's PRISM and Privacy Shield and all that, to which selfhosting is the solution. Now, my sister, mostly on Apple, got concerned with all the hacks and privacy violations over the years. She's a tech noob, so i can't really recommend her prism-break.org

There's a bunch of hosted solutions geared towards small to medium business, like Univention Corporate Server, NethServer, etc.

Are there similiar bundles for private use, basically Apple cloud alternative? With services like cloud storage, cloud office, media share, maybe chat, videocall?

Or should i let her wait until i got my box up, VPN her over? I'm only semi-professional tho.

Installation question - Storage Expansion Card required?

Hi, I was thinking of getting a Framework 13 and putting Linux on it.

So I was looking at the Ubuntu installation instructions and it says a "Storage Expansion Card" is required to install. I click "view" to see what that is, and the item page says it's a 250GB Type. The URL provided goes to a dead link, but I think that means a "250GB (2nd Gen) Storage Expansion Card" for $45 on the configuration page. I've installed Ubuntu before, but I just used a plain USB stick, and the instructions aren't clear on whether that's enough or whether I need to use their specific drive for some reason.

So my question is: when I'm configuring a Framework 13, do I need to add a 250GB expansion card, or can I just use a USB stick that I already have (to install Ubuntu)? Thanks.

Do we have a setting to block posts that contain keywords yet?

Hi!

I know that this question was asked several months ago, and the response was that there wasn't a setting for it. Has a setting that blocks posts with keywords been implemented since?

Thanks in advance!

What's a small cleared space in a forest where people can live called?

Say there's a forest, but there's a small cleared area where a family can build a place to live. What's the geographical term for that?

Edit: The word I was looking for was a clearing. A glen was suggested as well, but that is a space between rolling hills, while the space I was thinking of was on flat land.

Thank you everyone!

Back on Linux - It's Always DNS

Hello friends!

I made the switch from Windows back to Linux over the weekend, and so far almost everything is going swimmingly. Distro of choice is LMDE, and Steam and Proton are running like a dream.

I am having one minor issue which I've resolved in an unsatisfactory manner. Online games keep disconnecting frequently on loading new areas. This is occurring most noticeably on Guild Wars 2, Last Epoch, and Path of Exile.

I've resolved the issue by switching my DNS from my ISP default to Google's 8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 service. No issues since the change.

So, this is not ideal since I'd like to break away from Google services for improved privacy. Are there any ethical DNS providers I can point to for reliable gaming, or are there any alternative solutions I should look into?

Woodworking @lemmy.ca

Is there a wood hard enough to regularly scrape aluminum?

Iā€™m sorry if this is not in the spirit of the community, but I figured my dad would know because of his experience woodworking, and I donā€™t want to ask him for obvious reasons.Ā Iā€™m happy to remove it if it doesnā€™t fit.

I have an aluminum herb grinder, that regularly gets jammed up with resin. I tend to use a regular (probably pine) food skewer to clean it off, because I donā€™t want metal shards coming off of the aluminum from a metal scraper or plastic pieces from a plastic scraper. The pine works okay, but I have to replace it regularly and it canā€™t get everything.Ā

I know pine is probably one of the softest woods, but would a hard wood be significantly more durable if it were cut as thin as a skewer (4mm diameter round)? Would anything be both reasonably obtainable (I live in a place with frequently abandoned old furniture, if that would be a good source, or I can go to a lumber store) and more durable enough to be worth it?

Do "chest pillows" hurt for women to do?

I see fan-art or scenes of a woman using her chest as basically a pillow for someone. It's cute and all, but I can't help think if that hurts for the woman, especially if her breasts are large?

What is the intended correct calibration value for the following line?:

Reading the instructions strictly the answer should be 35.

However, puzzle makers often try to be "clever" by creating intentionally poor instructions. Which makes me think they might want the answer to be 55.

Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries?

ATMs Iā€™ve checked:

BNP Paribas: no balance inquiry option. Nor did it print the balance on the receipt.

Attijariwafa: no balance inquiry option. Both ATMs are always out of paper, so no way to check whether the balance would be printed on the receipt. Anti-feature: you must enter your PIN before it shows you the menu. Does that mean it connects to my bank even in the absense of a transaction?

Ing: no longer has ATMs?
KBC: no longer has ATMs?
Belfius: no longer has ATMs? (answered)
Aion: only has 1 ATM (unplugged & vandalized)
Europabank: has no ATMs?
DHB bank: has no ATMs?
Fintro: ATM is the same as BNP Parabas?
BBVA: do they still exist?
Bank of Baroda: has no ATMs?
Beobank: didnā€™t check if they have any ATMs
Keytrade: likely has no ATMs
BinckBank: likely has no ATMs

Questions about blade server SSDs

I recently bought a used blade server on the cheap (thank you LabGopher) to upgrade my home set-up and got one in pretty good shape. This is my first foray into blade servers and as I'm in the process of setting it up I'm running into some questions where I'm in a bit over my head trying to figure out.

The server has 4 x 3 TB SAS SSDs. I've installed Ubuntu Server 22.04 just fine. However these four disks show up as a single disk with all the partitions on it. fdisk and similar tools all just show a single sda drive. Furthermore, the total size of that combined disk is shown as 8.4 TB instead of the expected 12 TB.

Clearly I'm running into the 2.1 TB disk formatting limit on each of the four drives independently, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Ubuntu can't even see the missing space. My questions are:

  1. How do I recover my missing 3.6 TB? If I expand the partition to include all free space I just get the 8.4 TB, so it seems like it's a deeper limitation than just the OS, whic

When exercise of rights is made conditional on use of technology, is the right violated?
