The use of content warnings on !asklemmy
---
TL;DR
Use spoilers for NSFW content that is "within reason" and doesn't break Rule 1 like this :
> \::: spoiler My NSFW warning > > My NSFW comment or post content > > :::
This will look like (click the triangle) :
My NSFW warning
My NSFW comment or post content
---
The longer version
The community rules which seem to need to be balanced by the mods most are:
- Be nice & have fun, and
- NSFW is okay, within reason.
The lemmy.world site rules also state:
---
We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.
The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.
Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome. We will moderate accordingly.
This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.
---
Moderators seek to apply these, sometimes conflicting, rules. In doing so we take the balance of probabilities approach. The majority of comments which have been removed to date have been a clear breach of community Rule 1, however sometimes balancing the requirement to be accepting of NSFW content and the requirement for participants to be nice can be difficult. To make this easier, posters and commentors are encouraged to use the spoiler functionality in markdown to create a content warning on asklemmy. Posts that use a spoiler are less likely to be removed when considering whether they are "within reason" NSFW.
To create a spoiler, use three colons ":" followed by the word "spoiler" and then the warning text to create a content warning. Type your comment(s) on the lines below and then three colons at the end to end the spoiler.

- So this whole vigilante murder thing...
[EDIT] Inb4 more people try to suggest that I'm mourning the loss of this scumbag capitalist fuck: No, I'm not sad he's dead. No, I don't think corporate murder is acceptable and no, I would not ever rat to police if I knew the shooter and yes, I believe the punishment fits the crimes he's committed against untold thousands of people. THAT SAID...
I'm not down with vigilante murder or anything because it seems like the slipperiest of slopes toward chaos, but what other option is there in a situation where someone seeks to make an impact in this way? You can't just beat up evil CEOs and let them go back to work. It would be naïve to expect them to change their ways when faced with consequences for their actions and then promptly let go. It just seems like the chances that it emboldens their penchant for exploitative behaviour and disdain for people in need are too high.
We're just born into and strapped to this capitalist ride and expected to sit quiet and make these leeches their billions. How else can this cancerous greed possibly be dealt with? Is vigilante murder the only effective option? Honest questions. I'm terribly conflicted and I'm genuinely curious what more reasonable and intelligent minds than mine think about this because I can't think of an alternative to murder in this case.
Ideally, we wouldn't have to resort to vigilante killings to level the playing field but I 100% understand that we don't live in a society where the rich will ever give a fuck about the rest of us or would ever sacrifice their power over us in the name of goodwill.
- Just curious but are we heading towards an "eat the rich" society?
While it's very unlikely that someone has a definitive answer, this question popped into my head after the assassination of the UHC CEO and it's been bothering me that I can't shake off this feeling that more is likely to happen (maybe not in higher frequency but potential).
Usually I could provide counter-arguments to myself in a realism/(should I buy apples or oranges comparison) kind-of sense but this one I feel more unsure about.
I wish I had more diverse exp in systems analysis as these kinds of questions that linger in my head really irritates my OCD brain as I just want to know what's the most likely answer.
- What's the deal with hexbear.net users
Is it bots? Are those humans whos mission is to cause chaos? Is the weird behaviour caused by the creation of the concept of lemmy?
Somebody please explain to me wtf is going on.
They answer destructive comments, assuming shit, demanding shit. Are they trolls?
Are they being paid for causing chaos? It’s insane
- Do you laugh at your own jokes?
Maybe it's the flu I'm having but I had a funny "YouTube comment" on a Harry potter video, on my head and when I came up with it I giggle for a good 30 seconds, my torax started hurting (again due the flu)... Ouch
- What is a stance you hold that goes against your personal preferences but you believe is the right thing to do?
For example, I don’t use TikTok. I never have, and I never will, and I’d advise everyone else to get off the platform too. I genuinely believe it’s objectively harmful to people’s mental health and possibly even a threat to democracy. That said, I also believe people should be free to decide for themselves whether they want to use it or not, which is why I’m against the U.S. government banning it.
- How random has your life been?
Have you ever met a stranger that gave you advice that changed your life?
Have you lost a partner at a young age? Got a rare disease?
Decided to buy bitcoin on a whim in 2009?
Changed careers several times?
- What are some good new Christmas songs released in the past 5 years or so?
By new I mean original songs, not covers of older standards.
- Your consciousness is transferred to a random North Korean child living in Pyongyang; How do you survive? How would you plan your escape?
Sorry if this is a weird question. I'm bored and randomly thought about reincarnation and started wondering, thought this would be a fun question. 😉
---
Rules:
-
All your current memory is instantly transferred when you fall asleep one night (you don't get any prior knowledge of this so you won't be able to make any preparations), then when you wake up, you are in the body of a random North Korean kid living in Pyongyang somewhere between age 10 and 14 and matching your gender assigned to your original body at birth (I'm sorry, I know this would be a struggle for those that don't identify with their gender assigned at birth, but it's part of the challenges of this hypothetical)
-
All psychological health conditions are also transferred (unfortunately)
-
Your new host body would not have any physical disabilities and is mostly healthy (sort of)
-
You don't have any of your host body's original memories, they're gone. (Edit: You retain any language that your host body's original consciousness have learned, but no memories) Their consciousness was overwritten by your consciousness's arrival and they, unfortunately, died. That consciousness wouldn't know or feel anything, it just vanishes, poof.
-
The person who was originally you in your old body, would immediately die during sleep, at the moment of the consciousness transfer occuring. Doctors could not find a cause of death, and its marked as "Unknown Cause of Death". No foul play would be found, no one would ever get falsely suspected by authorities of murdering you.
---
So how do you survive?
How do you plan your escape, or are you even gonna try?
👀

- Have you seen UFOs and other aerial phenomenons you have trouble explaining?
With the recent talks of UAPs because of the current events over the UK and New Jersey, I'd love to hear your experiences.
- Can we estimate how many deaths a company is responsible for?
The current news has me thinking that, while the death of any human is not something I actively relish, most people feel a certain satisfaction, relief or, at least, less sad when someone like Osama Bin Laden dies, because they were responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people.
Which got me wondering, have studies been done estimating how many legitimate insurance cases are rejected, delayed or otherwise mishandled, and how many of those result in deaths? I guess other industries are also responsible for some pretty measurable risk factors (e.g. air pollution). It would interesting to see some rough numbers of how many deaths the CEOs who choose to continue running these companies in harmful ways account for. Obviously, they are only indirectly responsible, but the same could be said about Bin Laden, he didn't fly the planes himself, he delegated.
- Why aren't people scared from proprietary content the same way they are scared from closed-source software?
I started seeing more and more non-free content (paywalled or non freely licensed articles and videos) and less Creative Commons or freely licensed content.
All of this is making me worried about the free content future.
Why aren't people worried about that and why they are not doing something about it?
I don't know of any non-profit currently that advocate for free-er world, which is essential for the libre culture.
- What is contained within the hot moisture clouds emitted by hot springs?
Obviously water but are there other molecules like sulfur etc?
Edit: also do hot springs stink cuzza sulfur?
- Unregistered Hypercam 2. What's the first memory that popped into your head?
For me, it's a 30fps video about someone doing a Super Mario flash game walkthrough of their own level. It was pretty meticulous, pushed the physics of the game. Lots of F.L.U.D.D. (a funky water spray bottle for plumber self-propelling) and dive tricks.
- People who lost a parent they truly disliked but were still in contact with, how did you feel?
Well, I have a parent that is right on the edge of dislike that I keep them in my life for the sake of family harmony. But I consider them to be a bad person that makes me extremely uncomfortable to be around.
If you had something similar, and they died, how did it make you feel?
I'm purely curious because right now I feel like I would happy that they are out of my life, but sad for my family, but overall happier. And I want to understand if I'm being naive about the hardship of losing a parent, even a disliked one.
- Do you think United Health Care is going to have trouble finding a replacement CEO?
Darth Vader: "You are in command now, Admiral Plett"
Plett: (nervously) "Thank you, Lord Vader"
- What's your hot take on the Marvel cinematic Universe?
Mine is that the Disney+ shows should not have any impact on the movies, that they should just be on their own.
- How would you get back into hobbies you've abandoned for years?
I hate scrolling but I hate my old hobbies too. I had several. Alternatively what are non-prestigious unsuccessful unprofitable talentless hobbies associated with losers I can pick up? Not joking, I hate doing any "talented" hobbies.
- Alright Lemmy, what are some of your weirdest dreams/nightmares?
Mine was about 24 hours ago (yes I haven't sleept for a while) when in the dream, I was taking a train for some reason, and then everyone around me suddenly became zombies. Creepy.
My other dream was less weird, just my electronics started dying, then I looked outside my window and a nuke was going off in the distance and I realize my electronics got killed by the EMP of the nuke, then I woke up right before the shockwaves hit.
What are your weird dreams?
- Could this be the start of a nouveau French Revolution?
I mean in America but also possibly worldwide with all the bullshit lately
- If you've ever interacted with someone who speaks a different language, what is the funniest misunderstanding you've had?
An example of what I mean:
I, in China, told an English speaking Chinese friend I needed to stop off in the bathroom to "take a shit."
He looked appalled and after I asked why he had that look, he asked what I was going to do with someone's shit.
I had not laughed so hard in a while, and it totally makes sense.
I explained it was an expression for pooping, and he comes back with, "wouldn't that be giving a shit?"
I then got to explain that to give a shit means you care and I realized how fucked some of our expressions are.
What misunderstandings made you laugh?
- What devices or equipment you own or had that doesn't have much use in the modern world anymore?
When I was a kid my family owned a device whose sole purpose was to rewind vhs tapes.
- Can anyone suggest me a bible app or website, which doesn't collect any information and provides daily devotional?
It crazy how many websites out there around bible collect information and share it with third parties. I looked at a bunch and couldn't find anything that's completely private.
Worst case, I would OK with them collect information but not share any information with third parties.
- What's the last post you started typing an answer to, thought about the replies you'd get and noped out of?
Was about to answer the billionaires one, realized there are better ways to spend this limited beautiful moment of life than being virtually shouted at.
How about you?
- Good Android mapping/GPS app?
Looking for outdoor navigation. Google Maps is plenty fine for streets, but it's too limited and business focused.
Need something simple that:
- Makes it stupid easy to mark and label a spot. Really easy.
- Makes it simple to see, or at least guestimate, distances.
- Has Satellite/terrain coverage like Google Maps.
- Hopefully has accurate geographical features like creeks and ponds.
- A compass overlay would be the bomb.
What's good?
- Is there is a website or an RSS feed that display links to interesting research papers with overview under 100 words?
I basically want to only read the research paper, not an article based on the research paper.
Does it exist?
- Does anyone have access to the loops.video platform yet? what are your thoughts?
https://mashable.com/article/loops-fediverse-tiktok-alternative
Also, how long does it take to get confirmation email?
- What absurd luxury have you been savoring lately?
Mine is catching up on me Diddy stories with video game dungeon (literal dungeon, like in a castle) music playing in the background + glass of wine and/or in combination with a nice vape topped with an obligatory sense of personal superiority hahah!
- Heater element borehole water
Is there a better way to heat up my geyser that uses borehole water? The area I live in has no reliable water unless you drill a borehole. Every three months I change out my copper elements in my geyser. I am just asking since it is a pain in the butt
