- What advertising slogan would you give for Linux?
I though of:
> Your hardware deserves better.
Also you can give some more realistic ones like my friend:
> It just (not) works
- Interesting distro to try, or to try again
Hello, I have been a linux user for close to 6 years now and I have changed my distro quite a bit ( especially in first few months of starting out linux ).
I have wen't from ubuntu, xubuntu, fedora, peppermint, arch, artix, ... in first few years. After that I have settled on arch for close to 2 years. After that long time on arch I decided to try out and test interesting distro's for at minimum 6 months every year ( and if I didn't like them I would go to arch back ) until I found something else I could main because I have found a few issues with arch that I could accept but would become annoying from time to time.
Across the two year's I started this yourney I have used gentoo ( used it for a year but then the lack of a proper retroarch package made me change the distro, plus the 3+ hours compile times when updating specific software ( looking at you qt-webengine and firefox ) ), then I choose to try out nixos which I used for 3/4 months before all that main maintainer debacle and splitting of the team I wen't back to arch because I didn't wan't a distro I'm using falling appart on me.
And here I am now, another year is soon to start and I'm searching for another different type of a distro to try out that does something differently compared to most distros, even willing to try out nixos again if the situation has stabilized now.
My only hard requirement is that the distro need's to be able to play games ( as in steam and gog ).
Edit: just to clarify, I'm chaning distro's on a yearly basis for a learning experience and fun.

- KDE breaks removable devices and Bluetooth?
So not really sure what's going on but when using KDE I cannot mount my android phone or connect an android controller, however if I use Wayland they work
- Trouble with keyboard
Hey people! I hope you are having good time I recently installed arch, but I have trouble with my keyboard during installation and post installation which is null character (^@) printed to stdout, if I pressed function or Esc key null character stop appearing until some command wait for input (e.g. passwd) or pacman updating repo which will mess up progress bar or install conformation
I managed to install arch by enabling ssh with shell redirection, since I can't use vim or nano. I thought post installation everything should go fine since I installed base, linux, linux-firmware and amd-ucode packages, but now I can't log in as a result of null character
I should also mention that my problem across many distros like mint and mint xfce4, parrot, fedora, arch and EndeavourOS
note:
- hot keys (sound, brightness control keys etc.) work fine on fedora, but not on EndeavourOS version (25/06/2024)
- Keyboard response time feel slow, and I can't repeat key press by holding the key (e.g. hold backspace to delete several characters)
- vim not working, it will switch from insert to normal mode
- nano will go to end of file by moving line by line
- Sometime in live arch iso systemctl log will interrupt and appear
additional note: I think Fn key is what causing the problem
the gist is output from fedora workstation 40.1 livecd I think it may help

- what if linux or ubuntu took the android route???
like what if linux still was open source but had a lot of proprietary dependencies and packages and became more popular and therefore proprietary software came to it?? but it still would let you use any desktop environment and there would be a new proprietary desktop environment which was like gnome but easier

- I cannot enable `HAVE_KPROBES_ON_FTRACE` - Kernel compile
Hi,
I have a great piece of software, that apparently need
HAVE_KPROBES_ON_FTRACE
To config the kernel option I'm using :
shell make ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-gnu- menuconfig
The Kernel isLinux/arm64 6.6.63
When I'm doing a search inside
menuconfig
i get: ```shell Symbol: HAVE_KPROBES_ON_FTRACE [=n] Type : bool Defined at arch/Kconfig:223Symbol: KPROBES_ON_FTRACE [=n] Type : bool Defined at arch/Kconfig:117 Depends on: KPROBES [=y] && HAVE_KPROBES_ON_FTRACE [=n] && DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_REGS [=n] ```
But I found it no where in the menu... and if I add it mannuly in the
.config
file, then make some more other adapations inmenuconfig
my manual entry disappear..Any ideas ?
Maybe
HAVE_KPROBES_ON_FTRACE
is not supported in 6.6.63 ?Thanks

- Do you use Gnome or KDE Plasma?
I'm relatively new to the linux space, I was introduced by the steam deck which uses kde, and it's pretty similar to windows in terms of how it works so that's the DE i'd be leaning towards when I eventually switch. I've never used gnome so i'm not sure if it'd be worth using I guess?
So I'm just looking for some input from the community, do you use Gnome or Plasma, why do you use it, and what's kind of like a pros and cons kinda thing between the two?

- How did the Ventoy blobs issue end?
I remember a story where people asked about blobs included in Ventoy and there were no comments from the devs, leading to suspicion.
At the time it wasn't clear to me if there was any substance to the story or if it was the usual Internet exaggeration, so I resolved to ignore it for the time being and saved a reminder to look into it after a while.
Now my reminder fired off and I looked around, but couldn't find how the story ended... do you know?
- Linux for my grandparents
Around a year ago my grandparents asked me to update their computers to Windows 10. One from 7 and one from 8.1. I couldn't update from 7 to 10 so I just reinstalled directly to 10. The license was lost but grandfather didn't mind that "activate windows". And for office I installed libreoffice (or onlyoffice, I dont remember). On 7 he was using Chrome so I installed him Brave, which is similar enough and has an adblocker. He never complained about anything... until now.
Both grantfather and grandmother on the same day they got some notification (probably fullscreen, otherwise they wouldn't even told me) about end of 10 and that they should upgrade. So I told them Windows 10 support is ending in about a year. I gave them 3 options:
- Buy a new computer for windows 11
- Use windows 10 without updates - more likely to be hacked.
- Try linux. As soon as I said "Linux" my grandfatger said: "Linux, thats something... lightweight... right?". I'm a gentoo user and I forced my brother and sister to install linux but I never mentiond a word to my grandparents. I have no idea where he heard that. But I'm happy he did!
So the main question: What distro? I'm thinking of Fedora with Gnome. Something stable, modern, secure, and simple. Gnome is different, I know, but I also think Gnome is the simplest. Should I go with Silverblue or normal version? I will also definitely install rustdesk and make backups of windows. And I will first try liveusb so they can decide if they like gnome.
Edit: I'm currently trying to liveboot linux. I rebooted the computer and windows started updating...
Edit: I livebooted Fedora and Mint DE, they said they like Mint more so I installed Mint. Grandfather's scanner and printer were detected out of the box with preinstalled apps, ptinter sadlly doesn't work but that was also with windows - probably hardware failed. Now I'm Installing Brave for grandfather and uBlock Origin for firefox for grandmother. Everything good so far!

It should be that if i close the laptop and leave it, even overnight, it should only lose maybe 5% battery, but it actually loses all of it, as if it was on (it gets maybe 5 hrs of battery life)
I have it set to sleep after 5 minutes. What sorts of logs should I check to diagnose the problem?

- Using WINE for non-Game Programs
I have a Surface Go tablet that I switched over to Linux a while back, and just came across a problem that I don't know how to approach. I use an iDataLink Maestro module in my car to make an aftermarket stereo do what I want it to do. I want to check for a firmware update on it, but the management software tool is windows or mac only.
So I installed WINE and the PlayonLinux front end. I successfully installed the tool (Weblink) but the keyboard doesn't work so I can't log into it. The trackpad works though, and this is a directly connected keyboard/trackpad, so for one to work but not the other seems weird. I can find threads about non-functional keyboards with some games, but I honestly don't understand the guidance being dished out.
How can I troubleshoot and fix this keyboard issue?

- Windows-like middle-mouse button behaviour?
On Windows, if you click MMB on some windows, your mouse cursor will turn into a little ↕️ icon, and then you can scroll by moving the mouse cursor up and down, with it going faster the further you drag away from the position it was originally at.
This is one (1) behaviour I miss from Windows. Hours upon hours of scroll-wheeling makes my joints quite tired.
But well. Linux is nothing if not customisable, so I'm wondering if there's a way to recreate this behaviour on it.
I'm on KDE Plasma.
