Dude, Where's My Car? is so much better than it had any right to be. And while the main characters are stoners, most of the humor isn't stoner humor. Not that there's anything wrong with stoner humor, but movies that consist entirely of stoner humor tend to drag after a while.

Last Action Hero. I know the editing is pretty bad and the rhythm is a bit messed up in the last part but it's the most meta movie ever and an homage/parody to classic action movies. Having Arnold play the main part is the cherry on top.

Mystery Men is a phenomenal send up of the superhero genre. It's simultaneously extremely 1999 and decades ahead of its time.

I feel this way about 23 as well. Jim Carey as a normal guy who's absolutely losing it just hits different.

I blame the marketing for that movie not doing well. People went expecting a "wacky Jim Carrey flick" and what they got was a surreal and frightening thriller.
Eddie Murphy's "Holy Man" suffers that bad marketing issue as well. They plastered so many ads making it out to be a loony Eddie Murphy film and the movie itself is more of an uplifting drama about believing in one's self and not seeking external validation, with a few gags in it making fun of television shopping networks and the stupid shit people buy from them cause yeah, it's Eddie Murphy of course they're gonna have fun with it. But that's only like 1/3rd of the film.

I unironically love Armageddon and The Core. Yes, they're both stupid and unrealistic movies, but that works in their favor about as often as against. Something about the way they play with the core concepts makes me love them.

The most unbelievable thing about these movies is the competent government that makes the plot happen. In real life the astroid would kill the planet before they admit it exists. That's actually why these are comfort movies for my spouse and I, it's nice to believe in a world where people aren't stupid.

Son in Law is one of my partner's favorite movies, and even being introduced to it in the late 2000's, I can see the appeal. Peak Pauly Shore. Plus, there really aren't that many Thanksgiving movies, so it's right up there with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for the Mount Rushmore of Thanksgiving movies.

But in hindsight, Fantastic Four movies are better when they're cheesy as fuck, because so was/is the comic (more often than not).
My only remaining complaint is that the sequel was too chickenshit to give Galactus a giant purple fork hat. I noticed happily that the shadow of the fork hat made it into the trailer, for the new movie.

Mine's gotta be "The Brothers Grimm" starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It's the same camp vibe as the "Van Helsing" movie starring Hugh Jackman, but there's no badass super hero to save the day - there's just a bunch of imperfect people trying their best, and it's almost entirely by luck or destiny that they snatch victory from the clutches of defeat. It's also one of the most morbid depictions of childish horror i've seen on-screen, where it gives no fucks about being realistic.

Dredd (2012) is a near perfect 80s/90's style, over the top action movie made 25 years too late.
Well shot action scenes.
Excellent soundtrack.
Pretty darn well paced.
Good helping of action hero one liners.
Plot is simple enough for idiot, explosion go boom, brain to follow, but also takes itself seriously enough to present the horrors of its world via interactions with minor characters.
Karl Urban manages to do more acting with only his mouth and chin, and line delivery, than many other actors do with their whole face.
Olivia Thirlby is also very, very good, I do not understand why some other director has not cast her in an action oriented role since... now that Nintendo seems to actually allow their IP in films: Make her blonde again and she is Samus Aran.

This is a perfect example for this thread.
So much of that film officially cannot work:
The pacing is frantic and weird.
It relies on familiarity with the source show while being stand-alone and released too late. (Well, maybe it realizes that "Swiss Family Robinson in space" isn't rocket science.)
Various wild science fiction elements are slammed together, some very late with little foreshadowing.
But - the cast carries it off (particularly Garry Oldman and Lacey Chabert).
I have the hardest time explaining why anyone should watch it, but it's solidly enterainting, and all the bits that shouldn't work still somehow work.

Interstate 60 - a cute quirky B movie with some hella famous actors. Gary Oldman, Christopher Lloyd, Michael J Fox, James Maraden, Chris Cooper, Amy Smart, Kurt Russell. It is a fun and imaginative ride along a made up highway. My favorite scene was the town of Morelaw.
Big Trouble - a great movie shut down by circumstance. It was set for release in late 2001, the end of the movie involves hijacking a plane with a nuclear bomb, but then 9/11 happened so they sent it straight to video and stopped advertising it. Based on a Dave Barry novel, it’s a hilarious story involving a crazy cast of characters you may meet in Florida. Another star studded cast including Tim Allen, The Tooch, Martha Stewart, Janine Garofalo, Zoey Deschanel, Omar Epps, Jason Lee, Johnny Knoxville, and many more.
I have only met a couple people ever who have seen either of these movies.

Das Millionenspiel.
It's The Running Man except twelve years earlier and a media satire instead of an action movie. It comments on TV phenomena that wouldn't exist in Germany until two decades later (like scripted "reality" TV). Also, it has early appearances of one of Germany's most famous TV hosts (as the show's host, fittingly) and one of Germany's most famous comedians of the 70s to 90s (in a completely serious role, unfittingly). And unlike the Schwarzenegger movie it doesn't construct a dystopian future to introduce public bloodsports but merely gives a terse reference to a "law on active recreation" dated three years after the movie first aired.
To make it even more odd, it's actually a good movie despite being from Germany and made for TV.

Just re-watched this for the first time as an adult last night and my gods is it a movie of it's time. Spouse and I died every time music came on. The dialogue sounds like they were ad-libing all the way through, also why was this a movie? It feels like two season finale episodes crammed together with some filler and explosion.
That said, I loved it and it said so much about my childhood that my favorite movie as a kid suffers from equally unchecked ADHD.

I’m just going to drop selections from the Troma catalog in here:

These are objectively shitty movies. Most of these movies are irredeemable; hell, some of them are down right an exercise in poor taste. A lot of it hasn’t aged well, and I’m not talking about the cinematography. I haven’t kept up with Troma in the 21st century, though, so maybe Troma has gotten worse-better or better-worse?
However, I find joy in these movies because they are like a time warp back to New Jersey and New York in the 80s and 90s. They were so low budget and always filmed around New York (except for Toxic Avenger II which somehow was filmed in Japan), that they used a lot of family members of the cast and crew or random locals as extras. It is obvious that a lot of people on screen probably didn’t know they were being filmed (or if they did, didn’t realize what type of movie they were in). There’s bad hair and makeup (but not from the effects department), and thick accents and regionalisms that have faded. There are mainstreets and skylines that don’t exist anymore, or if they do, are wildly different. It is amazing to catch a glimpse of an era that doesn’t exist anymore. This exists in all old movies, but the low-budget realness hits differently.

The dude playing the emperor was phenomenal, and the effects team were competent as fuck even if the suits couldn't make a damn choice and stick with it. Plus it has the Hoff.

It's a pretty funny romantic comedy if you ignore the romance.
in regions with extremely long history like in middle east, you will often have old villages that were never documented. Or documeneted like 5 governments ago, lost to breucracy.
Literally the most interesting setting for a movie. A village that doesn't exist on the map. There is one single person with an ID in entire place.
Also comedy is basically some modern people from Colorado having culture shock for a whole hour. It works well.

It's like someone set it to make the stereotypical '80s movie. It has surprisingly good cinematography and a soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.
Like most '80s movies, it has some things that have not aged well culturally, so be warned. I don't think it's too egregious, but it's definitely of it's time.

The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen. Peak Gilliam, and always a joy to watch. Wish I could find a higher resolution version.
Nacho Libre. Everything about that movie makes me giggle.

I, Frankenstein
CGI filled brainless action with demons and gargoyles fighting a secret war. Aaron Eckhart as Frankenstein is stuck in the middle. The whole thing tries to copy the vibe of Underworld and mostly fails. Somehow I still love watching it. It's just the right kind of bad for me.

Johnny Mnemonic is unironically pretty damn good.
The pacing gets clunky in some spots, production quality is a bit off in some sections... honestly not really worse than say Escape from New York... its honestly overall pretty damn good.
This one deserves its own thread fr. Keanu Reeves worked his ass off to try and pull this together and it works in its cheesy way.
