Excuse me I thought this was a dEmOcRaCy, I voted and I expect significant reforms that will not be rolled back!
fr tho, we should reshare the site donation link, I had donated a few times, but if that librepay account isnt accessible by the current admin team, we should get our shit together (even if i had fun and this brought me back to the bearsite)
Is this like a 30 rock situation where a high level executive takes over our little girly show?
yeah instead we'll have three stickied update posts about the same topic with varying levels of information in them
we can live without them
This is my exact opposite take away
shock doctrine in action

I thought it was kinda nice not having 40% of my browsing real estate taken up by sticky posts I'm never gonna read. I will miss this golden era.
I think scrolling through posts is significantly less shit than scrolling through a megathread and having to expand or follow comment trees and find specific comments that may have gotten replies further down the thread that I was interested in. I can also hide posts that I'm no longer interested in by swiping, but can't do that with top level comments and their chains. I'll miss it when this blows over.

I don't remember which one of you is Blake, but I'd really like to hear from Blake. What's your next steps? I've got an interesting crypto opportunity if you feel like abandoning the hex token now. I'm also willin to duel at high noon for it.
Also you're doing an excellent bit, I love you almost as much as I love the whataboutism bot
It really was an excellent bit
I missed that entire discussion
Elon, thank you for unfreezing the funds so our glorious CIA admins could take back control of the domain
Nothing ever happens(?)
keeping the domain name after all of this may be the funniest outcome
The funniest timeline is frequently the correct timeline
gonna be funny if i didn't have to do this at all
they mi my grate until i website
This entire webzone is a psyop. You’re all my handlers
You're doing great!

I’m so confused. Do we need to do anything or no
you do not need to do anything
i am so sorry for the confusion, honestly the whole situation is confusing.
Years ago when we changed to hexbear.net an admin bought the domain name from a domain registrar.
That admin had things come up and wasn't able to be as active or available.
A small issue with paying for the domain name for the year 2025 happened and the payment was 1 day late.
The domain registrar (digital landlord) took the payment and also put the domain "hexbear.net" up for auction pointing to policy that says if you are late on payment they can auction your domain name.
The admin who owns the domain escalated the issue to the top level up support for the domain registrar. During that time we tried a technical route for moving the domain name to a new registrar, which we did not expect to work. The technical route had a 5 day delay on finding out if it worked or not, during that time is when we set up the vote for what name the community would want in the event we lost hexbear.net
At this moment we still do not know if we have it or not so we are continuing with moving towards hexbear.chat but think that we might have mitigated the worst case scenario with a malicious person getting the hexbear.net domain through the aforementioned technical route.
We are currently working on an updated post to give all the info we have at this time.
Thank you for the full explanation! Glad it seems to be sorting itself out. Good effort from the admins to keep us informed 💜
I also have no idea what this means lol
Wizardry is being attempted to shift this plane to another sphere before it is auctioned off to the forces of Mannon. It is a Ritual of Ratfucking, and it may be the funniest of all outcomes. The ritual is partially preformed and we currently exist between two spheres, both of them and neither. All is uncertain, the site exists as superposition, mere anarchy is loose upon the world and the situation is excellent.
Glad it's resolved: If anyone is curious on the behind-the-scenes the js bidder was planning to return the domain but maybe not in the best way. They found a bug in Sav's site that allowed them to bid without authorizations being placed, and on another account they managed to "win an auction" for low dollar value domain AND transferred it out somehow. Maybe they noticed, might be why their auction interface was in maintenance mode immediately as this was going on (archive from 19 Feb 2025 10:26:35 UTC https://archive.is/qsVg6 ).
It doesn't seem like that's what happened here, considering the auction ended prematurely and the transfer was initiated days ago judging by the whois history
but then also carcosa said "we are still going forward with hexbear.chat" below so who knows wtf the status is
No they didn't win, the auction was cancelled and the domain transferred probably independently. But I wouldn't be surprised if they found the bug and that's why they were in maintenance.
If anyone really cares that much, they'll share the account details and people can login to see their bidder name. Who knows if it would've worked, they might have actually checked that the payment cleared for a 2500$ domain or whatever it ended up being.
That's cool as hell actually
I've been wondering about the odds that once bidding ended someone here would come out and be like "btw I got the domain"
This whole debacle really shows how fake the concept of “private” “property” is
an object lesson via performative web administration in the virtual marketplace of digital property rights
and so begins the hexodous
(I don't know what's happening anymore
)I am totally lost now lol. I think mods just not updating on everything for the moment is probably smart. Too confusing to try to keep up. Just tell me in a couple days what I gotta do and then make a pamphlet about it later called "What Was to be Done"
"What Was to be Done"
it's definitely getting convoluted
If we got a bunch saps horny enough for this this URL to pay $2365 for it only to snatch it out from under them, that is the best thing ever.
Right? If we do retain control the domain, let's just auction it ourselves and reap the PROFIT on our CAPITAL
Please stop... I can only get so
You ever seen Xi and beatnik in the same room?
Aww i really wanted to know who would be willing to spend 2400$ on the sitename
A shrewd bean merchant
Shrewd Bean Merchant sounds like the name of a mildly anti-Semitic character from a Shakespeare play
you took a half measure
Hey everyone, I've been exhausted for the last week and am currently drunk so uh
what the fuck
is happening again?
In slow smol piss baby words while I sober up pls.
I think right now literally nobody is sure. We might be moving to hexbear.chat, or we might be staying as hexbear.net.
Lost track of access to the domain and it was set to expire. Cryptobro from "Hex Coin" threatened to take it over (or was that a bit? Nobody knows) plus some anarkiddies and others threatened to buy the domain when it lapsed. We appealed to the registrar to end the auction (it was going to go for over $2,000 as a bidding war ensued).
And now nobody is sure what's happening.
Cryptobro from "Hex Coin" threatened to take it over (or was that a bit?
It was a really good bit
I switched my mobile app (Voyager) over to chapo.chat several days ago. It can log in but some things don't work:
Is it just me?
same :/
Jerboa app works fine
That is odd. The api shouldn't care
Bush Hexbear mods did 9/11 whatever this is
PSA to everyone: the signup page sets a 60 char limit for password, but the login page does not. (I have reported this, and it has been fixed, but it won't be rolled out until next lemmy release at the earliest)
At least in Firefox, pasting from somewhere else into the singup password input silently truncates (shortens) it to the 60 chars. Since the login page does not have a limit, trying to login with a longer than 60 password will fail (it did for me)
TLDR: If you have a password that is longer than 60 chars and cannot login, try shortening it to 60 chars
I will hire a furry to counterhack my account
All I'm saying is I've been really looking forward to refederating under a new name and causing chaos before they can all defederate again, and it would be such a shame for all the hard work the admins have done to go to waste...
we're sending 100,000+ upvotes to lemmy and receiving none of the benefit! Support #HEXIT !
Holy shit we’re back!?
at this point i'm dying to know what the heck is gonna show up on hexbear.net afterwards
Silver Legion splash page taunting us
say it with me: Stickied megas! stickied megas!
This has been a wild ride
We are so back

Wait wait wait, did the original owner come through or not?
yes and no, she helped to escalate the problem to upper levels of support that basically told us, you missed payment by 1 day and the domain name is on auction, nothing we can do.
there was a technical route that we tried in order to transfer the hexbear domain name from one registrar (digital landlord) to another. we didn't expect it to work and based on the websites appears to have worked?
we are still going forward with hexbear.chat but it may help to mitigate the potential problems of a malicious entity obtaining the domain name
Nice work!
not to add to y'all's workload more, but if the domain got transferred, doesn't that mean the original owner now has it again? I'm not too familiar with domain stuff but I don't understand why the new domain would still be necessary at that point, can domain ownership not be transferred? or does she not want to transfer it to someone else or something
it just seems like a bit of a headache for federation/the userbase if the new domain isn't strictly necessary anymore, and the OG domain's ownership could be transferred to the current admin group
LMAO wait the transfer went through!? What does this mean!?
Domain Name: HEXBEAR.NET Registry Domain ID: 2584175083_DOMAIN_NET-VRSN Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.porkbun.com Registrar URL: http://porkbun.com/ Updated Date: 2025-02-19T05:16:07Z Creation Date: 2021-01-12T00:35:22Z'''
Hexbear.net is now registered on porkbun instead of Sav which indicates that it is now under control of the Hexbear admins.
Basically it looks like we won and are keeping the old domain. Can't be absolutely certain that there isn't some other bullshittery that Sav could pull as a parting shot so it's not quite time to celebrate yet.
on standbyThe People's Hex Army has escaped the reactionaries' encirclement campaign
So like, since there were so many dweebs drooling on other forums about taking the domain, and maybe bidding? Has anyone witness any handwringing from them since hexbear dot net is no longer for auction?
Wasn't it just one lib on Reddit?
Hell yeah I hope the domain transfer sticks
Our
is being taken away!!!I'm confused. It just redirects to chapo.chat when you try to access hex bear net. I'm signed into the Chapo but I wouldn't know how to sign out of hex bear if I can't access it. Do I need to delete everything on my account here at Chapo chat?
deleting your cookies for hexbear.net will accomplish the same thing, you do not need to delete your account
you do not need to delete your account
oops
no, the signing out happens automatically on their end. you don't have to do anything, just don't go to hexbear.net
Don't go to
Before 21 Feb, navigate to https://hexbear.net/.well-known/ (should load but show a blank page)
It loads a blank page, but redirects to chapo.chat/.well-known/ instead. Won't going further with the process log me out of chapo.chat instead?
yes. There was an erroneous redirect that temporarily broke that url. But the good news is we may not have to worry about the domain, check the latest post edit.
The well-known address doesnt load
It should show a blank or 404 page, that part is intended. I just needed a placeholder URL that will not be redirected to chapo.chat that people can load in order to access FF mobile's "Clear cookies and site data" button, since they don't have a UI to do it any other way without first loading the site in question.
It does get redirected to chapo.chat though
Any timeline on when the new site will be up?
Not that I know of. The domain switcheroo should be the easy part, getting our house in order organizationally so that this can't happen again will be a longer process.
That’s fair. I’m glad we have have chapo.chat to fall back on for the time being
the site blocking extensions i've used seem to load the page and only block it after a second. you'll probably need a firewall block.
uBlock Origin will definitely work.
Why aren't you using a javascript redirect on the hexbear.net domain while you still have access?
nvm I can see that hexbear.net is redirecting to chapo.chat now
Not sure what you mean by a "javascript redirect". What I've been told is the plan is to set up permanent 301 redirects at the nginx level that will then be cached. But if there's a more sophisticated way of doing it with js I'm all ears.
301 is definitely better. Browser will cache it.
