Updates on The Long March + Mega thread links.

Comrades! I moderate !parenting@hexbear.net here on Hexbear, I've seen the threads you've been making and would like to provide you with some updates as I know them. These notes below have been reviewed and verified by admins.

Here is the current status as I know it based on discussions between admins and mods. Please be aware im mearly a messenger, and have no material control over this process.

I think that regardless of the outcome we should start a tradition of turning off federation for a few weeks in February of every year in remembrance of these domain struggle times and because it's kind of cozy to be in hexbear-only mode.

- I'm an admin of another instance so I normally only interact with HB through that account. I found out about this situation because after a day or two I was like "Why does lemmy kinda suck now" and I realized most of the leftists were gone so I had to check HB for federation issues lmao

- I wish it wasn’t a potential security vulnerability because then they could sell the domain to the highest bidder and use the money for mutual aid like someone suggested.

When the site first went down my first worry was the server got owned and the db dump was going to show up in ChudWorld, which made me wonder if I’d had to use an email account to register. Looking at my acct profile it doesn’t look like it, but it got me wondering:
What pii is collected on the backend?
When the site was starting I remember there being intentional privacy engineering being done, but didn’t follow any of the dev work so dunno what that looks like.
- We do not require email for sign-up, anonymize all IPs that are logged through lemmy and clear all metadata from images.
  Posts, Comments, and Direct Messages on a hexbear user are logged which is why it is encouraged to use matrix in the direct message UI itself.
  We did not lose our servers where this information is stored, rather the domain.
- the IP stored in the db is anonymized for each login token which is why we have never had the IP ban option like other lemmy instances use.

  Throwing keys into lake is not security.
  Get your self settled up on bitwarden.com it has a very usesble free service. Life gets soooo much easier after a small investment of time to get your info in. And you just do that one site a time when you log into them as normal. After a while you are freed from logging in.
- I mean this as a genuine suggestion and hope it doesn't come off as condescending, consider using a password manager like KeePassXC. Do regular backups of your database and you'll be as safe as can be.
  
  Please dont suggest to someone who is unlikely to be capable of doing it that they should use keepassXC. There are many situations it is completely unviable and even more
  Bitwarden is much more likely to be a pleasent experience to onboard, less chance of a major catastrophe cause by screweing up the a minor technical issue, it can be shared with frinds and family.
  If later they want to step up to keypass, it can be some trivially at any time.

  Actually that might not work. I can't remember if it will ask you to enter your password first before doing a reset in the interface.
  
  I can't even add an email to my account. In the settings the email field is there, but if I put one in and press save nothing happens. There's no prompt or field for me to enter my password there, so it's not like that's what's stopping it. It's a sad mystery.

why federation gone
- With the domain being broken servers can not communicate with the site correctly. Also, if we move to a new domain it will duplicate historical content on other servers, turning federation off minimizes that duplication. It will only be temporary.

  You can also selfhost it pretty easily if you have any tech knowledge and a spare old laptop gathering dust or whatever. I recommend looking at vaultwarden if you want to do that

- saved as bookmarks? the host portion of the URL may change, but the rest should remain the same. you might have to rewrite the host portion to make them work but afaik the posts should survive

- Before woke ruined circuses we could get a bear, chain it up, squirt water at it, throw garbage and make faces and weird noises. Make it uncomfortable and lonely and atrophied.   He had one point though, if a hexbear.__ domain would be this much in demand maybe we should try to sell some of the others for money to put toward site operations, or other good things.
- a modicum of research would have revealed that sav is auctioning off the domain after its expired which means they are the ones that get the money.

- What a bizarre comment. We have no idea what the situation is. I doubt Sav, a predatory e-landlord company, is jumping out of their seat to be communicative about this situation. You've certainly never worked at a company if you can't imagine the idea that they are taking a while to get back to that one admin.

  If you know companies you also know that as they take longer to address or acknowledge the situation, it becomes exponentially more likely that they will decide to just let it be however it is now. The way it is now being auctioning the site off.
