[SOLVED] Segfaults, segfaults everywhere
  • I just went for the memtest86 and let it do its thing.. Should I do some more testing? I really feel like this is not about memory, at least not in a “physically damaged” way.

  • [SOLVED] Segfaults, segfaults everywhere
  • No, anything proton related works fine, other apps start crashing when something using proton runs in the background or after it was running before.

This problem keeps popping up all the time, thru multiple updates since I finished installing everything.

    I will check the logs.

  • [SOLVED] Segfaults, segfaults everywhere

So, I am looking for any ideas, help or head(s) smarter than mine.

This is my main problem for some time now, easiest way to replicate this is to run anything proton related. After that, some apps just keep spitting this via dmesg:

After a restart, all apps run perfectly fine of course and I can do whatever I need to do, until they stop working again.

    • On one forum, someone was suggesting a problem with memory, so I memtested it hard — everything is fine

    • On another, the idea was to reinstall intel-ucode package, this unfortunately didn't help neither

    • Finally, I've tried sudo pacman -Qnq | sudo pacman -S - because it was a suggestion somewhere too, no changes after that

    My boat:

    Arch Linux x86_64 / 6.10.9-arch1-2\ Gnome 46.4 / Mutter (X11)\ @\ ASUS Z97-PRO (Wi-Fi ac)\ INTEL i7-4790 + NVIDIA GTX 1070 Ti

Big, fat thanks for your time!

Update: Idea from jrgd did the trick! I am still testing it, but so far, I can't force anything to fail and everything seems to be working fine!

    What games popularized certain mechanics?
  • Well then.. To stay true to the history, we probably would have to go back to Galaxian from ‘79, which introduced 1-UPs / additional lives, bonus stages and player upgrades, plus simple summary / statistics for hits and misses.

  • What games popularized certain mechanics?
  • Well, when I was writing that, after midnight I will add, I had this feeling that Mario was doing this thing earlier but for me Mario stands as an icon for the first level design overall as a golden standard for introduction to mechanics and really efficient use of memory for data, and one of the first uses of dynamic music.. So you are totally right, Mario brought a lot of things, I’ve just played Crash much more.

  • What games popularized certain mechanics?
  • This might be a little on the side of the main topic but there was always something cool about Crash Bandicoot 100 Apples > 1 Life, and you could grind more to make some levels more forgiving, like semi-adjustable difficulty level based on your previous approach.. And later on — warp zones, you get to choose from a few options so the progression has variation.

Another thing that comes to mind, not sure if a first game to do it, THPS for unlocking movies and later cheat codes, modes and characters for finishing the career. Plus the whole gap marathon for Private Carrera.

Oh, and chanting from Oddword where it had various uses, for saving friends or for changing into enemies, or using special abilities. This definitely was something, because I still remember thinking as a kid, “how cool is that this one ability has so many different uses”.

  • I don't live by my morals
  • There are so many anchor points to respond to, from your original post and this reply..

Every well working moral compass starts any process from some form of self doubt — am I wrong here? What was I thinking? What if this is one giant mistake? Am I the bad guy? The garden can’t be all rotten, it’s probably me.. and so on, right? You know those? If you do, great, compass is just reminding you to be cautious and more aware of the decision making process. Then the spectrum begins, from “nothing matters and anything I will do does not matter”, let’s call it avoidant end of the spectrum, then on the other side “I should not make any decision and this is the best decision, everything will sort itself”, the everlasting frozen stone.. There are more ends but you probably already know where all this is going, the game is in progress and it is always your move. This is exhausting, hence the feeling of “hard to keep going”.

The hero visions? Ohh yeah, those are tasty, aren’t they? Equally destructive as productive. You can stimulate your ego with them into oblivion or.. grow actual motivation from them. The real question is, are you ready to do the thing that might become the milestone in your story? If not, you probably just need more time, rest, preparation, et cetera; if yes, how great is that? Whenever you feel like you are failing on your part of “we all are in this together” deal, somewhere on the other side of the scale, someone is doing their best. So if you need to take it slow(er), do it. Because there will be a moment when you will not want to stop doing something and that will be great too.

Maybe let’s finish with this idea of fighting. Not all fights are yours to fight. You won’t stop everyone from littering, eating meat, or any other type of influencing behaviors of others in an instant — magically — is just in the fantasy realm. The real fight starts when you pick your way and by not forcing others to join you, finally someone who will be motivated by your choices, might use it as a starting point for their own decisions or changes.. or you will get demotivated and change the trajectory.

If there is this underlying feeling that you should be doing something differently, what if that feeling is right?

  • I don't live by my morals
  • This sounds like you are somehow trying to take the full responsibility for the circumstances you were forced into. It is impossible to blame one person for all the things that are not working, looking and being “as they should”. The same goes for “we all failed”. It is much more nuanced than that.

The reverse perspective is more productive, every action and even smallest nudge into the right direction counts towards much bigger pile.. of dust.. on the endless desert.. Yet still, this is how mesmerizing dunes are formed. It’s not about the amount of grains, how long it took, it’s about all the persisting processes.

I can only hope it's not too bright or too colorful for anyone!

    Random overshare

Dear budget audio loving friends.. I just want to share my joy with someone now.

I had some janky/cheap mixed with basic/ok audio gear over the last two decades. Just one of my setups was an actual real deal, premium, upper-mid-tier audiophile level treasure. I had it for a few months, it was a lot of fun, yes, it was overly expensive, double yes. The pure power, clarity and (obviously) bass were on impossibly precise and reality-bending levels for late 20s me.. and most of my neighbors. There is a high probability that I have unintentionally killed some innocent flora and fauna with it. After maaany complaints about “dancing beds and glassware” etc. I just had to give it up — back then it felt like loosing something important.

So, let’s fast forward around a few years to yesterday. I think I might have created something special — at least for me — for about $50.

30 years old JVC receiver, I’ve bought some time ago as a project starter, paired with two german, vintage (50+ years old) 3-way speakers that I’ve found by a total accident on a local flea market and was pretty sure during the entire road back home that they might be dead or at least not fully functional.. how wrong was I!

I just can’t stop smiling now. Didn’t have so much fun while simply listening to anything in a really long time. I can taste the rainbow of the pleasant, warm and cozy sound.

For the first time, I feel like I have a perfect setup for me and my surroundings, yet it is the cheapest one I ever had. This is crazy, this should not have happened, but it did.

    Thanks for reading, I guess?

    IMDB alternative

I really would like to delete my account there and move on. Is there anything, solid enough, with a good rating system, some lists that I can make for myself or at least a simple “to watch”?

Would be cool to have a “where to watch / stream / buy” section and some basic info like people behind the movies and so on.

Major pros: good website and cross-platform mobile app.

I just installed letterboxd to check how it feels but before migrating anywhere I am more interested what I will read here.

    [Feature Request] Saved categories

I don’t know if this would be anyhow useful for anyone else or easily implementable, but..

    Categorized “Saved” list, like:

    • posts
    • links
    • media or photos, music, videos
    • comments

Maybe as a quickly switchable categories on top or just a full next sub-menu?

Another great thing would be a sorting option for the list of saved things, like:

    • by posted date
    • by saved date
    • A-Z / Z-A

To make the backtracking easier and faster?

    Kodi / OSMC

I have Kodi installed now, I will probably test OSMC later today, are there any other programs similar to them that I could test?

What I am mostly interested in:

    • fullscreen mode (dark mode / theme preferably, even if I would have to make it manually somehow)
    • option to navigate my drive or external drive
    • xbox controller support
    • subtitles support

What I want to accomplish is quite simple, every now and then I want to play a movie from my pc on my tv (connected via hdmi) and I don’t want to use mouse or keyboard while watching it to pause or turn the volume up a notch.

Kodi is kinda okay for all that but it feels a little wonky and pretty often makes a mess with my files, creating duplicates or ghost files on lists..

    Thanks for any help!
