  • I am surprised I've never heard of this book. Will need to check it out.

  • That's fair.

I was just trying to point that American attitudes (theatrical polemics claiming some sort allegiance to free speech) around social networks are not always applicable or desirable.

In my own country, Ukraine, we banned all Russian social networks and internet services in 2014 after they invaded. This is a reasonable action.

  • Depends how you look at it. If enemy states are actively leveraging their social networks to undermine democracy in your country, 2 months before the election may be the perfect time to ban US/Chinese commercial social networks.

  • Can't speak for Albanian internal politics (I will speculate the incumbent administration is almost certainly likely to use to their own benefit), but more countries need to start banning large commercial American and Chinese social networks.

  • Best option would be a contracted out 3rd party that gets baseline payment for managing the onboarding landing page and an additional bonus for 12 MAU growth.

ML should of course be removed from the default instance pool. The Lemmy Devs should understand why this needs to be done if they are acting in good faith. Any Marxist-leninists and supporters of russian genocidal imperialism can find ML via other means.

  • That's a good intro text. Mine is similar.

Who manages this, and who defines the criteria?

You probably want a single URL like join-lemmy.org that manages the selector.

Would likely need some algorithm based on geography and referral data, with some amount of randomisation.

There is no simple solution, but removing instance selection (or any discussion around federation) is a must for on-boarding.

Mind you, I do think there is value in talking about the benefits of federation - e.g. "A single entity cannot buy out Lemmy, it is designed to withstand such takeovers and remain independent", but not about specific when people are just joining. The ones who are interested will figure it all out themselves.

  • I like the interface of WinRAR more (just a matter of habit).

I even have a license for WinRAR that I bought 15 years ago.

  • Surprised it's a mere 40 ping from Kharkiv to London. I play with UK from Kyiv (so a few hundred km closer to London relative to Kharkiv) and I usually get closer to 50-60 ping. Might be a game-specific thing though.

A decrease from 40 to 30 ping for Kharkiv to London is a notable improvement in percentage terms (and with global latency every little bit counts).

  • Although it is a long-term project, it is already halfway through. After five years, you would expect to see some tangible test results or even some operational results. Wright refers to the successful result of IOWN members NTT and ChungHwa Telecom at the end of last year. They activated the first international IOWN APN gateway via an all-photonics network connection between Musashino and Taipei. The latency between these two points was very low, and the connection was stable, with only 17 milliseconds over 3,000 kilometers. Although it is one-way traffic, this is an unprecedented speed.

So a 34 ping over 3K KM. That would roughly mean any two locations in Europe would be at most under 50 ping. That's pretty good.

  • I wonder if this will work on my Raspberry Pi 4B? The issue is that it is headless and I don't have an extra monitor lying around (I access it via SSH). Perhaps it's time to set up a remote desktop project for my 4B.

  • An automated default instance selection is a must.

I would even go as far as removing the additional selection screens. Just have a small "choose custom instance" button with a "feel free to ignore this" clarification text.

  • I once got a really nasty cryptominer that shut down all attempt to remove it via a fully patched WinRar opening an archive with what seemed to mostly JPEGs (maybe some PDFs as well). Perhaps this vulnerablility the root enabler of the cryptominer.

  • VR is definitely one example where 16K might be useful, but VR is a relatively niche.

  • Not to be that guy, but I believe for monitors 8K might be the end of the line in terms of practical improvements. At the distances that monitors are used, resolutions beyond 8K cannot be differentiated by the human eye.

Please correct me if I am wrong. :)

  • Agreed, the trackers don't have a protocol for automatically federating.

But even beyond DHT, you can upload public torrents on new (for the torrent) trackers and they automatically get added to the swarm.

The real issue with torrents is that there is no method for federating private trackers.

  • Public torrents are already federated, no? You can publish a torrent with a single public tracker and when you check back two years later, the torrent is indexed by ~10+ public trackers.

  • Asrock responded to the reports last week. The company said that it had inspected a motherboard from a system where the CPU showed burn damage. It claimed there was no burn damage around the mobo or VRM area. After "cleaning and removing debris" from the CPU socket, the motherboard booted up successfully with the original BIOS and passed long-term stress tests.

    Removing debris?
