Anyone still around?
  • No-one wants chocolates, especially wafer mints, after 8.

    Not sure about noodles.

  • How do you actually read?
  • I used to read (books, newspapers, cereal packets, everything, even fricking Cosmo) a hell of a lot before t'internet. Now I struggled to read a magazine in one sitting. I have a diet of RSS feeds and the linked articles.

I'm thirty years older, as we all are pre- post- net, so that probably has an effect but it's upsetting me how little I read (read) now.

I have a old Kindle (circa the first paperwhite series) which I find is devoid of battery power whenever I pick it up and I forget to replace it on my wireless phone charger (buy the kindle a wireless charging client with a microUSB plug from Amazon/AliExpress to put between the cover you necessarily bought and the Kindle) when I remove my phone.

Thinking buying a dumb phone might be the way forward to kill my died of short articles which maybe killed my attention span.

  • A/S/L
  • I identify as older millennials (born at some point in the 80s), male, and about 50/50 split between living in North America or the EU.

    I'm not but that's how I identify.

  • Who was the biggest Karen you have encountered in Public?
  • There's a reason they got the generic name Karens.

Like Gary (Garys aren't Karens), there aren't many around now but the few I've ever come across really were worthy of these name.

  • Who was the biggest Karen you have encountered in Public?
  • My ex wife. Imagine a Karen. Now imagine she's a solicitor who believes she is the law - no, not the police/a police officer, literally the law .. statute .. Acts.

That went as you might imagine it did.

  • In the event you believe a contract killer is in breach of contract, who adjudicates?
  • John Wick.

Or maybe the Ian McShane character person..

Or the adjudicators that made JW an outcast in three (was it?).

    Yes, the adjudicators.

  • What is something lemmy can improve upon?
  • Search. I want to search the entire Lemmy, not just 'my' instance.

Failing that: have Lemmy content appear in search engines.

  • Which country specific instances do you wish existed on Lemmy?
  • Monaco. Belize. British Virgin Islands.

    Asking for a friend.

  • Live Linux distro list?
  • Not heard of this.

    Thank-you.

  • What part of clothe shopping annoys you most?
  • Husband is a lucky guy. I guess your ex was hoping for mean reversion (there's a more appropriate mathematical term that I just can't think of as I write), with/for his children..

I had a best friend as a sixth former (17-18 yo) who was around your height; I lost my bf because the person I was engaged (then married) to didn't like her. Subconsciously, I've probably always compared everyone to her and the grace and poise with which she presented herself. I'm old now.

Scandinavian girls seem to be a reasonable height. I haven't spend enough time over there to know for certain that it's really a thing; and I wasn't that sad to want to look it up! Wonder if that would suit too? It's not the 80s anymore though, sadly, and dressing is very different and difficult now.

5'9" is tall. Hope you get to work/wear it well! I want to say 'congratulations' .. it doesn't make any sense but congratulations anyway! You/he won the lottery.

  • What part of clothe shopping annoys you most?
  • Tall women (5' 7" / 170cm +) walk elegantly and have a poise often denied their shorter counterparts.

Never be worried about being tall. I wish I had been blessed. Both wives were 5'4". I'm 6' 183cm.

  • What part of clothe shopping annoys you most?
  • Deciding if I look a dick in the clothes I am trying on, or whether I really really look a dick in the clothes I'm trying on.

The one real advantage in going clothes shopping with a wife or girlfriend, for stuff for oneself.

  • What is the best caller ID app for Android?
  • Thank-you. I'm much the same.

    Removal of old packages

I'm sure I saw somewhere some while ago a way to remove old/obsolete packages from an system-upgraded install. Packages that wouldn't be removed because they're dependencies somewhere still.

For example, the xorg drivers can be removed from my F40 when upgraded to f41 install. As if I'd installed it from the to-be f41 everything iso.

I can't find it from the documentation; can someone point me in the right direction, please.

I can't quite remember but I think it was an official Fedora package that one 'installs' which contains a script to remove obsolete packages from the prior Fedora version.

    UPDATE: found it. https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/#sect-clean-up-retired-packages

[Possible bug] Sharing a post to Firefox makes Voyager into Firefox, and I can't get back!

Picking a random post from the list of posts in Voyager and then using the share facility to share it to Firefox makes Voyager look like Firefox with the address bar and so on.

However, when I want to go back to using Voyager flicking back - partial right swipe on my Pixel 7 Pro w/Niagara launcher - doesn't do anything useful and I'm still in a version/instance of Firefox with the Voyager icon.

Can someone double check that this does/not happen to them to an up-to-date Android phone before I report it, please?

    Thank-you in advance

UPDATE: looks like it is my end from your comments, thank-you people. I'm going back from whence I came, shame faced. 😳

I'm glad. Voyager is my Lemmy of choice!

Maybe it's Niagara. There's a couple of stability fixes coming through. So here's hoping! Meanwhile I have a reeducation class to attend! 🤣

[pre-noob] What's the process for migrating from, in my case, Alexa, Smart Life to Home Assistant?

    Hello all,

What do I actually do when I finally have a running instance (of containerised HA on a Raspberry Pi)? Delete all the toys from Alexa and Smart Life and start again in Home Assistant?

Is deleting everything the intelligent way to go rather than trying to transition?

My Google-foo is failing I did try to find an answer in Lemmy/Reddit/HA. Apologies if I miss an obvious place.

    Thank-you in advance.

Is there a community for instrument learners, particularly piano/keyboard?

My early teen cousin is learning to play keyboard/piano. She likes to compose her own songs, and she's good at that, but perhaps could use some help with the basis rhythm.

I thought that a book of rhythms might help. Something like this, but it's going to be the wrong era for her on the surface, although the rhythms repeat through the ages. Encyclopedia of Piano Rhythm Patterns: Popular Piano Rhythms and How to Play Them https://amzn.eu/d/2JdTsST

Please point me in the right direction. Thank-you in advance

[Reddit] avoiding Reddit links in Lemmy.

    Hi all

Is there an Android client that allows me to avoid Reddit posts which are currently crossposted and overwhelming my Lemmy timeline?

Something like Domain exclude as on the Relay for Reddit client.

    Thank-you in advance
