I, an Atheist, have been banned from c/AtheistMemes
  • This is such a huge problem in atheism communities, which is why I don't spend any time in them despite being secular and non religious myself (yeah, I honestly don't even like using the term "atheist" anymore). Religious or not, you shouldn't be telling people what to believe or how to believe. That goes for hardline Christian nationalists just as much as it goes for hardline Atheists attacking anyone of faith. If it's not hurting anyone, let people believe what they believe.

  • Chinese security officials call for investigation of Intel CPUs for chip failures and security flaws, says chipmaker 'threatens national security'
  • Legitimately back when I chose my CPU and I was debating between the Intel i9 14900K and the AMD 7950x3D, my final decision to go with AMD came down to this because at the time their specs seemed almost identical. And based on the more recent news about the 14 series, I absolutely made the right decision! 🇵🇸

  • How Couples Meet in the US
  • I sure hope so. That or a good open source app for dating becomes available as an alternative. Alovoa is the only one I'm aware of and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'm not opposed to the idea of meeting people online but I just absolutely cannot stand the predatory monetization practices of these companies and the social environments they facilitate. It's unbearably toxic.

  • We're coming for you
  • I think they researched this and found that literally no creature completely rely on mosquitos, and that if they were wiped out the power vaccum would be replaced by other small flying insects that are within the diets of the creatures that would otherwise eat mosquitoes. So yeah, there really isn't anything stopping us from wiping them out. I say do it, and just keep some in a lab just in case if fucks stuff up. Or maybe more reasonably just modify them so they can't suck human blood or pierce human skin, which I'm pretty sure we're also already capable of.

  • Discord says piracy subpoena would violate users’ First Amendment rights
  • Matrix is promising, but I think it still could use a bit more polish. That said, I run a discord community, and soon one of these days I'm going to make a Matrix version of it and encourage users to try it out. Though very few probably will.

  • Put a cute fit together the other day!

If it weren't for the amount of effort I have to put in, I'd love to look like this every day xD

Writing an article on the Fediverse and Lemmy in particular. What are your thoughts?
  • That inability to passively keep "consuming content" is honestly a big strength of Lemmy for me. On Reddit I can sometimes get sucked in for hours on end, and I can get mentally exhausted pretty quickly but just keep scrolling for "the next thing." The fact that you can't really do that on Lemmy has made it a much healthier choice for me to spend time here, and I've only just started (kinda – it's complicated).

Interactions here feel so much more personal too, which I like. Even with all the various instances and communities, we're also all part of the same community. And that can kinda extend to the fediverse as a whole too. What we have in common is that we all want an alternative to the corporate social media landscape that gives more freedom to the users, and enables interchange between platforms to discourage monopolizing walled gardens. It really is fantastic.

  • Do you have what it takes to become a geologist?
  • Yeah it's legal in Colorado and I had some fun with it while I was there. But now in Texas even though I'm of legal age I cannot get access to weed legally (except for delta-8, but they're trying to ban that too). And that also means the quality of weed is much, much worse. The smell of good quality legal weed from the boutique dispensaries in CO are very pleasant and calming to me, but I absolutely cannot stand the smell or taste of the "skunky" stuff, which in my experience pretty much all illegal weed tends to be. So I don't have much interest in obtaining weed in Texas, especially because I don't plan on staying here. My current plan is to get a degree and get out of the country, ideally move tosomewhere in Europe. Not sure exactly where yet, but I've narrowed down a list with the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Estonia, and Switzerland currently at the top (and yeah ik weed isn't legal in all those places either but from what I've seen the punishments seem to be far less severe). So I'm not really chomping at the bit to get access to drugs right now, though it'd sure be nice if more things were legal here.

  • Do you have what it takes to become a geologist?
  • I feel like I remember hearing bad things about Peyote? Not sure if that's what I'm thinking of. No idea how to grow spores (or really anything for that matter), I suppose I could learn at some point but for now it's not something I have the time nor resources to really sustain.

  • Do you have what it takes to become a geologist?
  • Yeah the delivery part has always been what's worried me the most. I don't know anything about getting a secure mailbox because as I understand it, any delivery point that belongs to you can be traced back to your name. And the only options I have are my house and the UPS/USPS office for delivery.

Also yeah I'll be voting for this election, hoping for a Harris win too and also for Allred to finally kick Cruz out of Texas!

  • Do you have what it takes to become a geologist?
  • *safely obtain them. I don't know how to tell apart legit sites and honeypots, and as a trans girl in Texas I am really really really worried about potentially being arrested. So I don't risk it, and I probably won't until I meet someone I can trust irl who can help me get access tbh.

  • Some changes, and Boosters vs Doomers
  • I do want to understand, I am no "booster" by any means and I think on the whole AI is being used in some abhorrent ways, but I don't think the technology is the problem I think the problem is it's use to steal art and by corporations to cut people out of the picture, and I do think there are some beneficial applications of AI and that it is not unilaterally negative or evil. Just being used in a lot of shitty evil ways right now. Does that mean I am unwelcome here? Genuinely asking.

Rules, regulations, or: why am I banned???
  • As someone who used to be in those circles, it wasn't always like that but quickly devolved into it. And I went along with it not even really because I believed everything that was there but because that was where all my friends were, and I tried questioning some of the principles but was then met with cold responses like "why are you questioning us?" And so I kind of just went along with everything. It took me a long time to get de-radicalized, but it's something to keep in mind that a lot of what keeps communities bound like that has nothing to do with the politics and everything to do with maintaining social connections. Which isn't to excuse any of it, but just provide a succinct explanation for how and why they proliferate.
