The White House believes Hamas has been weakened to a point that it cannot repeat the 7 October attack.
Speaking to ABC News on Sunday morning, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US had "every expectation" that Israel would "say yes" to the proposed ceasefire deal if Hamas accepts.
"We're waiting for an official response from Hamas," he said, adding that the US hopes that both sides agree to start the first phase of the plan "as soon as possible".
During that initial six-week pause in the fighting, Mr Kirby said the "two sides would sit down and try to negotiate what phase two could look like, and when that could begin".
Hamas proposed a permanent ceasefire in place of this agreement, and Israel declined. Now we’re back to waiting on Hamas to accept the temporary three-phase ceasefire with open negotiations for permanence.
It’s been tough to keep up on the order of events with news sources releasing articles at different times.
Bibi's word ain't shit. Even if he signs, I'm sure he'll still have "tactical" responses. Probably in and around aid. Or start shit in Lebanon and the West Bank.
They’ll have leveled the entirety of Raffah, so now most/all of Gaza is almost uninhabitable. “I mean, we gonna bomb the rubble? Sure we’ll sign a cease fire. It never stopped us before”
We expect them to accept their own plan? Dude, fuck Israel at this point. This shouldn't be newsworthy, and yet it is, because of course there's a good chance they would reject their own plan in order to keep killing women and children.
Yeah, I'm gonna take any judgment on Israel from the same administration that keeps insisting that they're not committing genocide with about this much salt:
This feels like a fuckin merry-go-round. And everyone knows how it’s going to turn out. The US and/or Hamas will roughly agree on something that could lead to a truce, and then Bibi will throw it out the window for some made-up reason, or just because he’s feeling obstinate on that particular Tuesday.
