Does anyone actually like the default GNOME workflow?
  • Gnome, 2screens, 3 workspaces.

Heavy user of Dock number shortcuts, as well as keyboard swap workspace shortcuts and window resize/splits.

Discipline is good for workspace organisation, I know which "space" contains which groups of applications.

  • How do you handle secrets in home automation?
  • Environment variables. If they're in my network, that has no open ports to the internet, I've got plenty more problems.

Even a dev machine, think about how many env vars a normal dev has, plenty to loose.

Secrets management tool for self hosting on my level would bring more complexity for little gain.

Bash scripts etc can be uploaded to open repo and not share secrets which is what I want.

  • The 11-mile long, 600 lbs IMAX print of ‘OPPENHEIMER’
  • I've seen friends all buy types of these thinking they will get some good one and be impressed, 1080p, 3000lumens etc, all the specs say yes but the experience... no.

Go for an entry level from a brand that does projectors, eg I got Optoma but there's Epson, even acer is fine. I got a 720p with 1080p source, or BluRay rips and it looks very legit.

Of course you can go higher, but sounds like you just wanted to start out... Optoma H183 I think is mine.

  • Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?
  • Thinkpad T480s if you wanna save money for another something but get a good screen version. To take it to 1000USD on refurb /2nd hand Thinkpad Carbon.

Youre in a Linux thread, these run Linux like a dream.

  • Has anyone used n8n and Node Red and could compare them?
  • I havent used both, but if you can use python or Js at all, you can put whole code blocks into node red, I have used cgpt to make filters and json parsers for me before. It is quite easy to use in general and handles all my backend piping / logic for HA. I have devices from like 20 different vendors all playing perfect in node red, then HA just shows the nice dashboard essentially.
