FDA to pull common but ineffective cold medicine from market
  • It's the same here. The Therapeutic Goods Administration, our equivalent to the FDA, generally follows along with FDA regulations (though I don't think that will continue from next year somehow).

  • Harris’s Fox News interview starts off with heated exchange over border security
  • It's looking for a gotcha moment to take out of context. During the last Australian federal election the then-Opposition leader (now Prime Minister) was asked what the Reserve Bank cash rate was and he didn't know off the top of his head. The media and now-former government tried to beat it up as a big problem and proof that he wasn't fit to be PM, which is ridiculous (though his actual performance as PM so far is underwhelming). It did lead to a great moment a couple of days later though when they tried it on the leader of the Greens, who just replied "Google it, mate".

  • AI coding assistants do not boost productivity or prevent burnout, study finds
  • As a junior-to-mid-level developer I find myself having to rewrite the boilerplate code copilot comes up with as often as not, or it will get things slightly wrong that I then have to go back and fix. I'm starting to think that most of the time it would be just as quick for me to just write it all myself.

  • 'Omg': Critics stunned as Trump caught 'endorsing The Purge' as a real policy at his rally
  • Unfortunately the press and the peanut gallery have it very wrong on this one.

Deliberately. Comparing it to the Purge rather than the Kristallnacht gives the majority of people who only read the headline the wrong idea about what he actually meant, which derails the discussion towards "crazy old man says another crazy thing" rather than "crazy old fascist says another fascist thing".

  • Trump says he won't debate Harris again
  • I think there was just about the right mix of muting the mics and giving him enough rope to hang himself. Harris' campaign supposedly did want the mics unmuted for exactly that reason, but having them muted did let her get her message across to the viewers without constantly being interrupted.

  • I wish we lived in a post-scarcity Star Trek world where there’s no money except there is but not in the Federation except when it IS in the Federation and no one has any needs except when they do.
  • Replicators being unusable because of power shortages was an early plot point in Voyager, and there are things that can't just be replicated since they often had to trade with friendly civilisations that they encountered.

Of course, the real answer is that they went with whatever rules suited the plot at the time, consistency be damned.
