linux or windows?
  • Built a new computer last year and didn't want anything to do with win11, so I switched to Linux Mint. I really like it, and there's a lot of help all around online. Thankfully because of Proton, I haven't had any trouble playing any game yet. It's been great!

I do miss ClipStudio for painting and OneNote for ttrpg notes, but I've been making due with Krita and Notion.

  • Thoughtful catto
  • My dog does the same thing! I didn't know that was a semi-common thing

I'm not super convinced it's to eat around us with my boy, because he'll do it in the middle of the night too. But he has to do it where there's carpet. He'll only eat if there's carpet he can spit his food onto. Rugs under his food bowl don't count lol

  • What is an achievement in life that you're proud of?
  • Honestly, just where I'm at in life. I've been pulling myself up by my bootstraps for all my life.

Grew up in bumfuck poorsville with abusive parents, joined the military, did some cool stuff, left and went to college, bought a house, graduated, sold the house, moved across country, got a job with my degree, and found a solid friendship group who encourage and care for me and vice versa.

This is all while suffering from an unseen disease that I was finally diagnosed with while in college and have been fighting against ever since.

I am proud of my achievements and I can really say to myself that I made it, despite everything, I made it.

  • What's the most useless skill you've mastered, and how did you end up getting so good at it?
  • As an 800 hour player that has to put the game down because of competitiveness making me a curmudgeon -- Wow, gotta say. That's so much work.

Did you use the practice modes to get to be that level or did it just come to you during play?

  • What is the most painful thing you've experienced ?
  • A pain so great that your fingers stop working and your limbs go numb and everything in your body triggers a throb but you can't stop crying because it hurts too bad.

Uuuuuuugggggghhhhhh. I'm really happy that you're able to have them significantly less frequently. That's a huge boon. Hopefully you can be migraine free moving forward!

  • What are the scariest horror movies?
  • I am too lazy to change the formatting, but those are my notes on the movies I've seen this summer.. some of them I remember better than others, and I've definitely forgotten to include quite a few on here.

  • What are the scariest horror movies?
    • The Exorcist (The Version You’ve Never Seen)

I've never seen this version? But I have read the book and eugh. It's horrible in a sort of losing bodily autonomy way.

    • Hereditary (a masterpiece in my opinion. Free upvote literally every time I see someone recommend it)

This one sat with me for a long time and I swore immediately after watching it that I would never watch it again. And now I absolutely love it. There are a few bright moments that really freak me out, but the tension and build up is so good. Chef's kiss to this one.

    • Blair Witch Project

    Haven't seen!

    • Paranormal Activity

One of my favorites! I know this one gets dragged for being campy(??), but I think the original did an excellent job of building suspense and dread.

    • Ouija: Origin of Evil

Mike Flanagan is one of my favorites and this one is a lot of fun. Not as high in my list as others, but still a good time.

    • It (miniseries got me as a kid but Chapter 1 is good too)

I need to rewatch the miniseries, but I wasn't a huge fan of the more recent movies. I think the actors were all great (especially for Pennywise), but it felt like it was trying too hard? Pt 2 seemed to realize they'd never match the book and it ended up being more funny than anything.

    • Lights Out (not the entire movie but it has its moments and overall a good style)
    • Candyman (original)
    • Poltergeist (original)
    • Autopsy of Jane Doe (another poster reminded me of this one!)
    • The Taking of Deborah Logan (for like one scene but IYKYK)
    • The Dark and the Wicked
    • The Orphanage
    • Terrified and When Evil Lurks were both solidly unsettling at least

These are all being added to my list!

    • Event Horizon (though I know you didn’t like this one)

    Bleh. Lol

    • Conjuring 1-2 and Sinister too, all at least solid spookies.

Love these movies. I would add the first half of Insidious as well.

As for my list - I'll throw that in a separate comment soon enough :D

  • What are the scariest horror movies?
  • Oh I agree that they're not the only good horror movies, there are so many out there that are good in other ways and many of which I absolutely love. But I'm really just looking for that something to keep the lights on at night, lol.

Thanks for the list! There are a few I haven't seen in there, I'll give them a try :)

  • What are the scariest horror movies?
  • Oooh yes. I'm with you and the other commenter that that particular feeling of dread is really really great. Hereditary, Midsommar, and VVitch definitely all fit that bill. I've heard the same for Lights Out, so I'm going to give that a go too.

Also Chernobyl is so so good. I've seen it a few times now and oof.

  • What are the scariest horror movies?

I love horror but apparently I don't vibe with a lot of recommendations I find online.

I'd seen so much hype about Event Horizon and I absolutely hated it and didn't find it scary. I just watched Late Night With the Devil and whole it was definitely enjoyable, it wasn't the least but frightening. I also just watched Let the Right One In and really didn't like it. It also was not a horror movie in my opinion.

I will say one of my favorites is Sinister or the first Conjuring. Sinister for the stomach twisting dread and suspence throughout and Conjuring for the same.

So, what movies do you find to be the scariest?

What's a phrase you hear a lot, but disagree with?
  • I think if I come at you with the express purpose of venting, then just some validation is really all I'm looking for, personally. A "that sounds hard" or "dang, dealing with X sounds rough". Things like that make me feel like you're actually listening and like I'm okay to feel so frazzled about whatever is happening.

Another approach that I think is good is asking whether or not whoever is talking to you wants validation, or solutions. I'm guilty of always offering solutions when people want to just vent and be heard, so that's always a good stop gap.

But I absolutely understand how awkward it can be trying to be there for someone and, of course, your results may vary. Still, communication gets us everywhere!

  • What's a phrase you hear a lot, but disagree with?
  • I'm with you on "this too shall pass". My family uses this like it's their damn catchphrase and while I'm sure the intentions are good, sometimes I would like validation when I complain about my life being a shit show, not just an idle 'this too shall pass'. Might as well have just shrugged and walked away.

  • Dahlias!

Stumbled upon a rose and dahlia garden with a ton of different species. It was such a a gorgeous place and a gorgeous day. I took a bunch of pictures, but this one really sings for me.

Stick shift drivers - would you get an electric vehicle?

I'm stuck on this personally. I love my manual, I have a tiny little Mazda 2 and I have driven that thing absolutely everywhere because I can control it better than any automatic I've ever driven. But I've been casually looking for a new car and I'd love to have an electric, but I don't want to lose that level of control and everything I love about a manual.

What do you all think? What's your take?

How do you say you want a divorce?

I'm really stuck. I've been unhappy for years and we've done couple's therapy and tried to reconnect, but it's just not enough.

I have a bad habit of feeling guilty and responsible for everything and I just can't see a future where I hurt my partner so badly. I don't know how to sever myself from the relationship and alllllll of the stuff and responsibilities. My partner slacked off when it came to college internships so they've been unemployed for years, and now finally found a fast food job. But that means that if I leave, they're done for. They can't pay the mortgage alone, nevertheless the bills or food. They also mentioned in our therapy that their greatest fear is divorce and I don't know if that's because they're still so attached to me or if it's the fear of having to make it on their own.

How do I uproot their entire life over my unhappiness? That just doesn't seem like something I could possibly do... but I can't stay here, I'm withering away.

    Help?

Is it an unspoken truth that everyone has a crush on their friends?

Or am I just the paragon saint of puppy love?

Seriously though, do y'all have a crush on each of your friends?

Let's talk dating apps. Do you like em? Have you used em? What's your takeaway?

    As title states.

But also, can I get some advice from the community? After a long while, I finally lifted the veil over my eyes and came to terms with the fact that I am totally and unapologetically homosexual. But I've been married for a long time so we're trying to make it work and just extend ourselves to polyamory. I've booted up a dating profile, but should I include that I am a baby gay? Do I include my open relationship? Or are those things to talk about in person? Any advice?

Can anyone else get to Beehaw?

It appears to be up on Web, but I can't seem to get it to load in at all on Liftoff, and I've been making sure to be on my Beehaw account.

I have cleared my cache and checked for updates. Is this just a me problem or a bigger problem?

Are there any climatologists in the room? What is your job like? What do you do? How were your studies?

I'm thinking of going in to get my masters in climatology and I want to know everything from the mouths of those that do the work.

I don't have a degree in meteorology, but I was a weather forecaster for a number of years, mostly focusing on aviation weather. I have a degree in geography /GIS and think those skills will help with research and such. I really really really love weather and want to be part of it.

    So... Can anyone offer insights?

What is your favorite archer build?

I've been looking between fighters, rangers, monks, and magus for long range builds, and each of them have their own perks and flavors that are fun and varied.

So what is your favorite setup for a bow user?
