  • Yeah, that's kind of a running theme with pre-installed Linux. You can't just go to the store and buy one, it's always some weird sale they hide in a closet.

  • Absolutely. When people can actually buy a device with Linux installed, they love it. See Steam Decks.

  • 1 - Yeah you can do this. It's slightly more complex to set up, and uses a bunch of extra hard drive space. Also sometimes Windows just decides to fuck it up. Also my experience with dual booting is that I never open the Windows partition and it ends up a year behind on security patches.

2 - You shouldn't install SteamOS. It's great that it exists though, because it's been pushing everyone towards better Linux support. Most games just plain work on Linux now.

3 - https://distrosea.com/ will let you run the installer for a bunch of distros remotely on someone else's computer. Most Linux distros just run the whole desktop in the installer, so you can experiment with that. Take five minutes to boot up Linux Mint on this and poke around; it'll make you feel kind of silly for waiting this long. Then use it to try the stuff other people recommend.

I always recommend Linux Mint (no bullshit, very well supported, Windows-like UI, easy setup, yes it runs all my games). But there are plenty of good options.

  • Probably not! They've been shutting down small dams where I live too (salmon country). Big dams are one of the most effective ways to generate power, but small ones just kind of suck.

  • Most of those techbro startups before "AI" had actually pretty low costs of running whatever their core service was.

lmao no. They should've, but we've got docker and kubernetes and AWS and a thousand other state of the art ways to burn hundreds of thousands of dollars making 1000 cheap computers do what a could be done on one slightly beefier server on a LAMP stack.

  • The phone I had before my first smartphone, a Motorola Razr V3, was 2.1 × 3.9 × 0.54 inches

I remember thinking that my first smartphone, the iPhone 4s, was enormous at 4.54 × 2.31 × 0.37 inches.

    The current iPhone is 5.81 × 2.82 × 0.31 inches.

But at least the least important dimension keeps getting fractionally smaller I guess?

  • I think the first person actually wanted to say something like "my ADHD is making it so hard to pick a Halloween costume this year," but they're so twitter-poisoned that they have to turn it into a universal experience, assume the existence of an existing discourse around that experience, and imply a societal failing.

  • "oat barista" sounds like the name of a game marketed towards horse girls

  • I think it's nice when people combine their hobbies.

  • I can't help but imagine this is the work of a clever intern, repeatedly tasked with making Grok align to Elon's latest political whim, who decided to automate the process for themself.

  • Don't worry, Marx was actually wrong when he said that the contradictions of capitalism that'd lead to communism were some nerd shit about the tendency of the rate of profit to blah blah blah. The contradiction that will lead to the fall of capitalism is, in fact, Ferrero Rocher Flakes.

  • I assume it's only going to be Epic Bacon Flavored Siri. But if they actually hook it up to anything important, podcasters will have an opportunity to do something very funny.

  • The long ones are only funny in contrast, and there should at most be one of them in the pool.

  • Sometimes your brain needs a break from work and a dopamine novelty hit will get you back on track.

Feed apps have a random chance of giving you the dopamine novelty hit, but it's pretty small, and usually it's not a very good one. But our brains are trash at randomly sized rewards - that's why people get addicted to gambling and gacha games - so you'll unthinkingly go check one of those trash fires to look for one.

Once you recognize that's what you're looking for, you can go get it somewhere that'll actually give it to you. Which doesn't have to be something profound or classy, it can be watching an old episode of The Muppets or Dragonball Z Abridged or a cute cat video or solving a sudoku.

Often you'll get halfway through whatever that is and feel kind of bored of it - the scrollers have trained you that means to go back to searching, but that's actually your signal that you've gotten what you needed and it's time to go back to work.
