New Report Argues Private Rail Is a Train Wreck, Public Ownership Needed
  • Part of the discussion with US rail is that American rail carries some freight service and it would be better environmentally to maintain that service than go all passenger.

For profit companies have shown themselves as being bad at running freight rail, but the solution to public rail needs to include freight.

  • Capitalism
  • Part of the problem is that, while Marx writes well regarding the economic flaws of capitalism, he isn't as good at writing about the politics of change.

When induced by the body politic, we see that some of the economic surplus can be reallocated to the workers provided there is political pressure. It can come in the form of state backed rights, progressive taxation, and even direct welfare payments.

It probably isn't the perfect system Marx envisioned, but enlightened liberalism is able to make subtle shifts over time in a way that absolute monarchies can't.

  • China to see biggest millionaire exodus in 2024 as many head to U.S.
  • This is a fundamental sticking point between people who believe in any form of capitalism and communism. If someone develops a method of creating a surplus of labor, under communism, they have no right to that surplus beyond the surplus they would get as a worker.

  • China to see biggest millionaire exodus in 2024 as many head to U.S.
  • Yeah. I think a lot of people hear Chinese millionaire and think of someone like Jack Ma. The problem in China is that a millionaire can include roles like plant manager and senior designer, people you need to continue developing the economy.

  • Answered: Is there such a thing as "overqualified"?
  • Yeah. I've seen great designers get noticeably frustrated when they can't optimize the project to the level they could in school because there is a budget and maintenance factors that keep it from happening.

You also start getting into issues where that staff can vastly outperform other staff and it creates tension in compensation.

  • Self-Regulation
  • Hooker Chemical sold for $1 and a list of conditions because the local government was threatening eminent domain after the company gave several warnings.

And I'm not going to defend Hooker in other locations.

  • Self-Regulation
  • The problem with using the Love Canal was that it was the local government that really fucked up.

For the time, Hooker Chemical Company disposed of the chemical waste in a somewhat responsible way; a clay lined canal that they later topped with clay to prevent water infiltration. If the town wasn't dead set in developing the land, we likely would have never heard of Love Canal.

  • Chinese Brands Will Sell A Third Of The World's Cars By 2030: Study
  • China is definitely pumping money into its manufacturing capabilities, but I don't think cornering the international market is why.

What appears to be happening is that local officials pushed an industrial development policy to make economic numbers go up. Some provinces got to the point of building factories and leasing them out to companies for that sweet economic growth.

The Chinese national government is trying to find a market for this since it can't afford for all Chinese local investment to be bad. Developing countries don't have the funds for the cheap solar output and the other industrialized nations are putting up trade barriers since they are running massive trade deficits with China already.

  • How Ukraine shattered Europe's balance of power
  • Or we could see a reimagining of the EU as it transitions from a national led organization to a supernational one. We are already seeing some national heads make moves to support their party over nation in EU politics. It is possible that this continues as politics in the EU becomes more important than member nations, especially as the EU starts gaining increasing budgetary and policy power.

  • How Ukraine shattered Europe's balance of power
  • Germany also has an economy that is most threatened by China's increasing manufacturing prowess, both within the EU and outside of it.

It is also becoming apparent that Merkel's leadership was in just being able to maintain the status quo, something that Germany can't do now.

  • Who is a character you feel is overhated and despised too much ?
  • Yeah. I also find the relationship has a lot more dysfunction on Jim's part than fans want to admit. Jim wouldn't cheat on Pam, but Jim makes several life changing decisions without Pam and gets angry if Pam doesn't go along with them.

  • If the American embargo of Cuba ended, what do you think would happen to the USA and Cuba?

This isn't meant to be a discussion on the morality of the embargo, but the affects of the embargo ending for both countries. These affects can be political, economic, or social.

What if the Gaza Strip declared independence?

The Gaza Strip seems very poorly served by the Palestinian Authority, let alone Israel. But, the area has relatively stable borders and it would likely have a stable government in Hamas. So, what if Gaza just declared independence as the government with sole control over the Gaza Strip?

Would Gaza get recognized by other countries? Could it parlay the recognition into forcing a permanent peace with Israel as becoming a recognized country puts Israeli treatment of it into more known sections of international law?
