China's gonna dig up a map from the 1300s with the island on it claiming it as the rightful territory of China since ancient times
- And then dredge up an airbase around it. And then accuse Japan of “covert geological incendiary incursions” instead of, you know, admitting they built a thing on an active volcano.
  
  There is already a Japanese airbase about a mile away from it. The airbase was the first to confirm the new island.
  Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Force’s air base on Iwoto Island (previously known as Iwo Jima Island, the site of a major Second World War battle) confirmed the emergence of the new island last week after personnel heard a loud explosion that sent sand and ash flying high into the air.

All jokes aside, this is pretty cool. It's easy to think of ourselves living in a static world and forget that everything is always changing.
