But Cuomo tried very hard to turn it into a referendum on Mamdani’s views on Israel and Palestine—and the media establishment took the bait.
It's weird this is an issue in a mayoral campaign in the USA. The role has no foreign policy authority whatsoever, and Palestine/Israel is 5700 miles from NYC.
He’s about to raise taxes on ~350k millionaires, while increasing wages and lowering the cost of groceries and rent. It’s everything Trump promised in his campaign, but he’s doing it the exact opposite way.
When it works, Trump is gonna look like a dick, and the nation will see that democratic socialism will get them what they were promised.
the nation will see that democratic socialism will get them what they were promised.
What's that old saying like "none are so blind as those who will not see"? I feel like people are so emotionally invested in "socialism bad, democrats bad" that it's going to be hard for them to accept contradicting that.
It won’t work because, like every socialist system everywhere, capitalists will seek to undermine and interfere.
Trump is already deeply unpopular in NYC, so it’s not likely to change anything on the national stage. New Yorkers have been seeing Trump’s BS on parade for decades now. It won’t change New York’s opinion of Trump.
Nationally, it might. But that’s only if the media actually runs with it; The big news orgs are all in bed with the established politicians, so they’ll likely be smearing him left and right to avoid having it turn into a national shift.
he can propose a tax raise but it still has to get through state legislators and the governor. i dunno about the rent and grocery stores. I'm all for this guy but he's going to need everyone's help making any real changes. i really hope we see it happen!
If he does. He hasn't done anything yet.
So, he's planning to decrease the value of Trumps places... Dangerous moves... I still wait for the first US politicians and judges that work against the Forth Reich to causually fall from windows.
Yeah but he's doing it for those NYC liberal elites, so improving their way of life is a bad thing you see.
Socialism has failed every time it's been attempted, for one very good reason.
I fully expect the CIA to get involved. Probably before the general election even happens.
There's a huge Jewish population in NYC, and many mistakenly assume that all of them support what Israel is doing. To a lot of people Judaism=Zionism.
Even if that assumption were correct, the mayor of NYC cannot meaningfully aid or hinder Israel's actions. A politician's position on an issue far outside the scope of the office they're seeking doesn't usually influence my vote.
That's a weird assumption. Many Jews strongly oppose it, including Bernie Sanders, Jon Stewart, Ben and Jerry from the ice cream, and probably millions of less famous Jews.
Plus, Israel is super unpopular right now. Mainstream media and establishment politicians don't get this. The more they criticize Mamdani for his lack of allegiance to Israel, the more people will vote for him!
Yeah the most bizarre thing to me was seeing the debate and hearing a question about foreign nation visits
Like wtf is a city mayor doing visiting other countries and why would we care
That was super weird. It was trying to bait out mamdani and other progressive views about Israel but man what a word question for a mayoral race
New York has a big Jewish population.
Oh, they're still trying.
But they just keep making him more cool.
Seriously. It's not "failed"; it's in full fuckin' swing.
Media: "Everyone, this guy doesn't grovel for Israel!"
Everyone: "okay that sounds good."
Not sure if this was a smear campaign as much as the lobby getting high on it's own supply.
It would be nice if the media made it easy for us and just kept reminding who is funded by AIAPAC.
Doesn't he still have to win the general? So we'll see if it failed or not.
In New York, the Dem primary is MUCH more competitive than the general against (perennial loser and hyper-racist vigilante) Curtis Sliwa and whichever dross failed to achieve the backing of one of the parties but are still rich and/or corrupt enough to afford running anyway.
Other than Sliwa, his opponents will be a corrupt as fuck compulsive liar who was probably days from being sentenced to prison when he decided to pledge his allegiance to the Mango Mussolini without joining the GOP, and possibly the sex offender he just beat.
Remember when trump invited the taliban to camp david...
Bruh, no, I didn't remember until you posted this. Holy shit. It's been a longass 10 years.
Failed? It's been less than a week. They're threatening to denaturalize and deport him. Sounds like they're very frightened.
Am Jewish, am native New Yorker, no longer live there, would vote Mamdani. Fuck Israel.
OK, so next it’ll be the an entrapment operation? And then maybe an assassination?
I mean, if history is our guide…
On the one hand I'm surprised, but on the other I'm not since most political consultants are fucking out of touch idiots, but I think they were lazy and went for the more recent "hate Palestine or you're an antisemite" bit and found it didn't work.
Next I'm worried they're going to use the much more effective "defund the police makes you unsafe" bit and lean heavier into the "communist" game, if he doesn't get deported first of course... I'm very happy he won the primary, but I have very little faith he's going to win the general election unfortunately :/
Have a little faith, he's the heavy favorite. The city's unions and politicians are in the process of rallying around him, while his opponents are all jokes who likely won't get as many votes combined as Zohran.
It was similar to Jeremy Corbyn (I'm not arguing he's perfect) where they didn't think he could beat Labour as an independent
lean heavier into the “communist” game
I do sometimes wonder how effective this is. Before the rise of openly fascist influencers and things like 4chan, I would have laughed and told the Angry White Men trying this something like "the 1950s called and want their Red Scare back".
But these red-pillers have done a lot to conflate POC, non-xtians, feminists, LGBTQ, and liberals with "communists" and advocate for the likes of fascists like Pinochet (who "did nothing wrong") and giving "communists" "free helicopter rides" and I do wonder. Especially when it comes to that cyclical theory of the rise of authoritarian terror.
The young people falling into the brosphere/redpill thing probably have zero historical context and are just going to generally be utterly clueless about the dangers of what they are falling in with...they might think they'll get to be ones conducting violence on others in the name of "fighting communism", but they probably don't realize that these things tend to get very ugly, even for the people perpetrating the violence, even if they are complete psychopaths that only care about themselves. Eventually, there are not enough "outsiders", and you have to invent more...and even the "good" psychopaths might find themselves on the other end of that gun...
went for the more recent “hate Palestine or you’re an antisemite” bit and found it didn’t work.
I'm not sure how recent that is? In any case, it's hilarious to watch the right trying to do this, even still and I just don't think it's landing like it used to. It used to just be assumed as axiomatic by the "liberal media" and the unhinged right wing media in the 90s and certainly right after 9/11.
These days....any gatekeeping on that Beltway opinion seems to result in a faceplant. I just don't think as many people buy into that bullshit like they might have before. The days of 3 outlets for evening news + a few cable news stations (that propped up the same narrative) are long, long gone....most people get their news from "social media" these days, which has a lot of good and bad. This is one of the good outcomes of that, I think.
it's not and it hasn't... keep fighting until he is mayor and starts enacting what he is promising
I really wish he would win. But I'm not hopeful.
What do you mean? The hard part is behind us, Zohran is now the heavy favorite in the general election.
That’s the ticket.
Vote in the primary. Vote in the general. Write your representatives. Do everything you’re supposed to do but don’t assume it will ever work.
If I didn’t have that attitude I’d have given up on voting ten years ago.
TIL Nearly 350k millioners in NYC. AI says: New York City is home to nearly 349,500 millionaires, according to a report by Henley & Partners and New World Wealth. This makes it the city with the largest number of millionaires in the world. Furthermore, one in every 24 residents of New York City is a millionaire.
Looked it up because of this other comment
The smear campaign against Zohran Mamdani isn't over, and won't be over for as long as he's in politics, and then a little after.
Definitely not over. Assuming he wins the election, I would anticipate a lot of sabotage stemming from establishment politicians and public servants. If they can't win this election, they'll want to make his term as mayor as discordant and ineffectual as possible, to make it easier for a more conservative/establishment candidate to win the next one.
Which is why I think everyone celebrating his victory are being naively premature
They’ll attack him in the history books. The banks put Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
