  • Had a nap after my whinge (thank you for your kind words 💜💜), then went to Savers and got two shirts for partner's new job, and two pairs of jeans for myself for under $50 in total.

Then got a massive haul of groceries from Aldi. I transferred $120 to my paying card but it only cost ~$50 all up for all of it. Stuck in the expensive Colesworth mind lol

Edit: oh and I applied for a few shelters as a volunteer, hopefully I can get a place at one of them as it's a requirement to have placement for the Cert IV in Vet Nursing 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

  • A suicidal jam jar leapt out of the pantry to its doom on the tiles. Red sticky jammy glass everywhere. Great fun to clean up.

    • Oh dear. I hope it was not too full.

This possibly happened to maintain the balance of jam jar karma within the DT, as I had the good fortune to pick up a good (empty) jam jar from the food cupboard this morning, The universe added to my jam jar collection and took from yours.

      • This does not account for the jam, or the karmic effect incurred in cleaning up the mess. Which is a very high value as sticky jam plus glass splinters is major. Jam by itself - wipe it up. Glass by itself - sweep/vac & blutack. Both, however, is an existential crisis as the mess can neither be wiped nor swept. Even rubber gloves are not safe from the splinters. And don't even mention the vacuum cleaner.

On the other hand, underwater magpies has incurred a major karmic benefit in cleaning it up. This far outweighs the serendipitous collection of a clean empty jar. I wonder how the universe will balance the scales.

  • So, Peter Khalil dropped in today.

I went to the door expecting to have to shoo away a salesperson, and was so surprised that I couldn’t think of any good questions to ask at the time. I did say I wouldn’t be voting for Peter Dutton, though

    • On paper, Wills is a blue-ribbon Labor seat - Bob Hawke's old seat.
But a third of voters there went Green in 2022. He should be getting out and meeting people/listening to them. They can't take this seat for granted any more.

  • For me, just over three hours left of lentish. I may have some intoxicated morning rants hitting around eleven am tomorrow. Be forewarned.

Edit: of the various vices I gave up over the last few weeks/months I think getting off reddit had the biggest impact, I'm looking to keep that up. Feels like it brings more negativity to my life than any traditional intoxicant.

  • The change of seasons has well and truly finally hit. Feeling a bit of a cold-ish headache from not adjusting to the temp difference properly and returning to a whole day of desktop work after ages... Gonna buy some soup, chug hot herbal tea, and have an early night. This will be my last long work week before I throw myself at uni hardcore.

  • Got tired of my yt-algo so I looked up how to delete my history, pretty easy actually. Hopefully whatever it re-learns about me doesn't send my down a pile of right wing kak. I'll need to watch a bunch of lindybeige and philosophy tube to refocus it on my interests.

    • Basic I know, but search for stuff you're interested in. I get Aviation and Naval history, Some Marvel, whatever is going on at DashCams Australia, British Panel shows/Taskmaster and maybe some Star Wars/Trek stuff mostly.

What you don't click on matters as much as what you do. Oh, I always mark Shorts as "Not Interested", even if I would actually be interested. I despise short-form videos and would disable them entirely if I could. I can kill them for 30 days at a time on my iPad.

    • Mine seems pretty easy to train. It didn't take much for it to start serving me up Jon Stewart, Robert Reich, Jesse Welles, Fairburn Films, retro comedy like Fast Forward and The D Generation and random stuff like this

      • I like hickok45 and forgotten weapons so I get every fucking gunfluencer with their stupid gun shows, like fuck off, I've got my two shows, I don't need more, leave me alone.

  • I've taken the next step in reducing Microsoft's presence in my life: I've just notified my mother that I'm cancelling my subscription at the next renewal and she will be back on the free plan.

It is not much of a sacrifice as I still have full access to all the programs through both work and uni, but I won't be paying them (which was primarily for my cloud storage). I might look at LibreOffice at some point, but the main thing I use is a complicated spreadsheet for my budget and it is highly likely something will break if I try it in a different program.

  • I seem to have been cursed by smoke detectors. There is some humour in this one seemly being able to read a calendar.

  • Wide awake at a quarter to five. Loving this cool weather, the heavy doona is so comforting.

    • I need to move back to the heavy doona, I've still got my light summer doona on the bed and needed the electric blanket last night.

As a bonus that means I will get to use one of my new (to me) fancy patterned flat sheets I was given, which will match the doona covers for the heavy doona perfectly. I have king sized wool doonas for winter & have moved to folding them between two sheets instead of using an actual cover, which is easier to change (especially because the covers have shrunk or something and don't fit well). I like the patterns on my covers so I have cut and hemmed them to be the flat sheet on top and the two patterned sheets I was given will match them really well as the folded over top sheet.

I've also moved to having flat sheets on the bed instead of fitted. I was getting frustrated with fitted sheets that had been cut without enough fabric on the sides and with dodgy elastic, so I was planning on making fitted sheets from the flats, but I have found that just using them as is has been working fine too so I think I'll just stick with that.

      • Flat sheets are my go to. I hate the dodgy elastic too. Protip - when putting a flat sheet on as a bottom sheet, tuck in the top edge first with a generous flap under the mattress. Then it is less likely to wrinkle into a puddle over the course of a week. EDIT: the bottom end tuck under can be a lot less generous and still stay in place.

There is also the old time method of using last week's top sheet as the next bottom sheet, so only 1 sheet per bed has to be washed each week.

  • Vehicle finances are worked out and I have a short list of vehicles to look at on Wednesday. Hopefully number 1 on my list will be ok (and still available) and I don't have to keep looking. I don't really enjoy looking at cars. Don't tell the salesmen, but I'll probably pay more just so I can get it over and done with.

The one I am looking at is just out of warranty period and is sold through a Ford dealership that offers a three year mechanical warranty on the used cars. Would it make sense for me to skip the vehicle inspection in this case?

    • I can't answer you re the warranty question, no idea if third party warranties are any good (I steer away from them for consumer appliances). But I totally relate to you paying a bit more to get it over and done with. I think the seller for the car I ended up buying sensed that as well, I probably could've knocked another $500 off at least but I was so over it at that point. Slim pickings in the sub $8k range that I was willing to deal with.

      • If I can get the trade in for near the top of the range on RedBook (its very low mileage, so I should) plus $500 off the advertised price I'll be happy, but I'm going to try for a bit lower. I don't know that my negotiation skills are up to that, but guess I'll find out.

  • I tried a YT short recipie for dins tonight. Mostly for shits & giggles, but it worked. Chicken 'fried' in water. I used drumsticks cos cheeep so no weeping if I had to toss it. It was quite nice. Will do this again, but with the recommended wings. Sauce was gorgeous in texture but I should have used a tad bit more chili and less mustard. Worth trying.

    • Ooh, this sound interesting. Mind chucking me the link? Thank you!

      • This is the one I followed

But not followed exactly. The sauce was amazing - if doing it again I would reduce the salt to the absolute minimum as the soy sauce does enough salt. Also the vidjo had the water boiling very vigorously, I did it at a lower temp so not so violent. Took about 1/2 hour all up. Doing this again, I'd put no more than 1 cm depth of water - ample to cook the chook, and quicker to evaporate. But this is subject to further testing.

Sorry for the delay - just got home from work.

  • Didn't sleep last night, at least I felt like I didn't

That will serve me right by making two brewed coffees yesterday.

This is going to be a long day and painful day.
