Elon / DOGE accessing the data is an obvious outcome of the US Federal Government having far more data on its citizens than it was ever supposed to.
The real problem here isn't that Elon is digging his grubby mitts in it it's the untold numbers of other people who've been quietly doing the same thing since the computer age began.
Be angry but let's solve the actual problem here and that problem isn't Elon / DOGE.
There can be two problems at once. It is a problem that the information was collected in the first place, and it is also a problem that Elon Musk now has access to it. Those things are both bad. I get that government overreach has been our biggest problem for a long time, but that doesn't mean Musk is incapable of being an even bigger one given the opportunity, which he certainly seems to have now.
It is also a problem that Musk had someone kick the door down while effectively screaming at the top of his lungs that the door is now open while his "special employees" on loan from Ben Chang run through the door.
The only possible silver lining to all this is that perhaps "normal" people will finally start to care about the problems techies have been screaming about for 20+ years now.
It was inevitable that a bad actor would gain access eventually, because there is no such a thing as an organization that you can trust in perpetuity. That obviously doesn't excuse the actual bad actors that now have access.
