We have an FDA with less and less power and a culture of ruthless capitalism that thinks the baseline set by the government is still too high and needs to spend all effort cutting as many corners as possible to make the largest profit.

Listeria monocytogenes is commonly found in soil, stream water, sewage, plants, and food.[5] Listeria in soil can contaminate vegetables, and animals can be carriers. It has been found in uncooked meats, uncooked vegetables, fruits including cantaloupe[30] and apples,[31] pasteurized or unpasteurized milk and milk products, and processed foods. They've literally been dumping diseased animal's shit on veggies for such a long time. Every now and then we get E-coli breakouts in veggies that should be safe from shit.
Veganic agriculture is a thing, but very hard to find.
