Do i need to use imgur like on r? Or can i just post a photo directly from my phone's gallery?

Just be aware that some instances will prevent any image upload that is greater than 100KB, so for these a 3rd party site is necessary.

but there is some benefit to upload on imgur, as it saves server storage space of your instance.

I see that I'm able to, but I'm wondering if it's safe. Do my Google photo details (date, time, location) all show up?

Don't rely on whatever host you're uploading to to strip your metadata. It's safer to do it yourself locally with something like Scrambled Exif
