The fucking stupidity of shit like this. Both right and left radicalization is a result of failing material conditions, not "think groups" like liberals love to believe. If you want the "extremes" to go away, start providing a quality life to people without having to take it from someone else. But naturally that would require people like the ones that did this study to understand the system. It would also require these people to realize they are part of the problem.

  Another important thing to note is that they will not crackdown on "internet spaces" until a left-wing one becomes a "problem". Right-wing spaces will be monitored, but be allowed to fully exist forever until they are a source of direct threat to capital. Leftist spaces threaten capital by nature.
  Case in point: when :reddit-logo: decided to ban the chapo sub because it was becoming popular. They had allowed The_Donald to exist all that time and used that as the excuse for banning "extreme forums" when really it was just an excuse to get rid of the leftist subreddit. Honestly the low level of it in the "extreme left" that they're tracking seems to be an artifact of having no fucking idea what to track and define as "extreme left". - Research like this (word associations with groups of web posts) is bunk pseudoscience. You can draw any conclusion you want if you play around long enough with the parameters. And god knows what keywords they used to find "violent/aggressive discourse"
  
  You're probably right, I really doubt these things go through rigorous peer review and have the methodology seriously analyzed.
  Another user pointed out that the results are also largely a function of how well moderated the communities are, which is probably not a lot in antivax-like communities.

  they used Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) to screen for words indicating "violence" or "aggression", and then (by the sounds of it) they just counted the proportion of posts from each forum that had at least violent or aggressive word.

- I keep tabs on the anti-vax forums, it's actually not that hard to peel people off from hating pharma/Gates/et al. for stupid reasons, to the correct reasons. It's way harder to get the racism out of them. But anyway, honestly it seems a lot more likely to me that they're in the stats for the same or similar reasons to why this site is. "Landlords kill" versus "another vaccine death" and whatnot, the way these stats appear to have been compiled would both count as violent.

- It's probably some incredibly dumb shit like looking for things like "die, dies, dying, kill, kills, killed," which would also explain why antivaxxers are so very elevated if it's reading shit like "fluoridated water KILLS!" and marking that as "violent" when it's just unhinged boomer brain shit.
  That would also mean that a comment like "kicking people out of their homes is an act of violence, it is attempted murder and it kills and immiserates people," would read as more violent (because keywords) than someone explicitly calling for minorities to be genocided in short or even slightly obfuscated language. Discussing violence that has happened probably scans exactly the same as direct calls for violence.
  Hell, this dispassionate explanation of their reasoning will probably have the algorithm in full :wojak-nooo: : :agony-shivering: :doomjak: mode because of all the keywords.

  Yup. The author references the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) program, which pretty much does exactly that. It's got hundreds of different "linguistic categories" that you can very easily and quickly scan for. Each linguistic category, or "dictionary", is a list of words that are said to reflect a different topic, idea, feeling, etc., and the program will tell you how many words in each text fit into different categories.
  If you scroll down to Table 2 on Page 12 of this document, you can see some of their categories and a few example words for each one. You can also make your own "dictionaries", which I think this dude also did. They have a demo on the LIWC website that you can cry, and you will almost immediately see how limited this process actually is.
  In research on natural language, like studies that scrape and analyze posts online, it's a hugely popular method for doing the laziest and easiest topic modelling or semantic analysis possible (i.e., looking for themes or concepts that people or talking about, or how they are expressing emotions in text). Like you point out, it's totally devoid of context, so it's validity doesn't extend much beyond "they are using XYZ words this often".
