The real question is why the fuck is Elon even in the picture
Because he's the president.
His role seems to be more like a prime minister, and in the absence of a constitutional framework he's usurping any and all forms of control over the executive. It's not uncommon for dictatorships to adopt nominally semi-presidential systems with a very weak head of state whose only role is to distract the people.
I don't disagree on a technical level, but I think it's clear that Americans need it kept simple when it comes to politics.
