Baldur's Gate 3
- One playthrough, a calendar year and 300 hours playtime later...
I did it. I finally did it! It’s been over a year since I started this game. Over a year! As a grown ass man I don’t have the time or the motivation to play video games that often. But this one I just couldn’t put down for long. Not for the story, I thought the story was super contrived and couldn’t care less for its grand narrative. But the dialogue, the moment to moment voice acting, the companions, the freedom of choice, the mature themes, the gameplay… Nearly 300 hours of playtime later, I have finally finished my completionist dark urge playthrough. I have never spent so long on any video game ever! And after the credits rolled I still went online looking for more bg3-related content. I was missing shadowheart and the bittersweet mindflayer ending left me wanting more shadowbae, more sequels, more… everything really. Not a perfect game, I felt that in some ways they bit off more than they could chew and at times it showed. But omg, it did hold my interest longer than anything ever! I guess I wanted to tell someone. And nobody I know personally would care enough. So thank you for reading this :)

- (SOLVED!) Please help with Running Baldur's Gate 3 on linux (Debian)
EDIT: The issue was caused by my SSD being formatted in exFAT, which doesn't support symlinks. I backed up my SSD & reformatted it to btrfs, and then I could install .NET without hassle & the game runs!
Original Post:
I'm having an issue running this game on linux, every time I click play in Steam I get the following popup:
! "you must install .NET desktop runtime to run this application"
Clicking "yes" takes me to download a Windows .exe which of course can't run on linux. I manually installed the .NET runtime following linux instructions here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/install/linux-debian but the game still gives me this error.
Other things I've tried:
- Reinstalling BG3
- Completely deleting every file from steamapps/common for BG3 & reinstalling
- Reinstalling Proton
- Skipping the launcher
- Tried with proton experimental, 9, 8, 7
My launch args are
STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata gamemoderun %command% --skip-launcher
On protondb everybody else seems to be running the game fine, but I don't understand how to get past this error.
- What feats do you use the most ?
For me it's basically this :
Great Weapon Master Sentinel Sharpshooter Alert Mobile Lucky

Anyone else unable to download various specific mods in the mod manager? It just says "error downloading mod" for me. It will not let me download cheaters ring even though i already had it once. It constantly errors out.
- They call themselves the... Guardians of the Sword Coast.
I've been playing the Guardians of the Galaxy game lately, and after realizing how similar Lae'zel and Gamora are, I know I have to reinstall BG3 for a Guardians playthrough.
STARRING...
- Tav as Petyr O'Quill, a.k.a. BARD-LORD - Half-elf, dual crossbows, high Cha/low Int. Torn between Lore for Cutting Words, or Swords for more pew pew.
- Lae'zel as Gamora, the deadliest woman in the
galaxySword Coast - All I really need here is modding her an emo haircut. - Astarion as Rocket - They're both foul-mouthed and quick to anger. Their backstories actually have a lot of thematic similarity, being twisted into someone else's weapon. Probably a Sorc to accommodate Rocket's love of explosions, unless the Artificer mod is any good. Could have Shovel as a stand-in for Groot? I may try to mod him into a gnome so that he too is small and adorable.
AND MAYBE...?
That leaves one party slot, which I see going one of two ways:
- Karlach/Minsc as Drax the Destroyer - Big, gullible, excitable, destroys stuff.
- Minthara as Nebula - I feel like she'd have the same vibe in a good party. Dragging her around with the misfits I'm turning into begrudging heroes might make for great banter.
Suggestions on builds/mods/things to do for maximum chaos and therefor fun? Stories of your own weird themed parties? Arguments about my awful flarking decisions?

- [SPOILER] Thoughts on that final ally choice
Major spoilers for ending of BG3:
>!This is my first playthrough where Lae'zel wants to free Orpheus (and not just to immediately kill him) so the choice of whether or not to do so is harder than just "do I trust the Emperor or not?". I'm definitely not the first to feel weird about the options you're given here and how they play out in terms of The Emperor's actions, but I thought it'd be fun to write out my headcanon for the direction I wish I could have taken the conversation (a direction I believe would stay true to what Larian intended with this scene). !<
-
>!After your character indicates they want to free Orpheus and The Emperor gives its speech about trust, your character can say "I trust you, but we can't let Orpheus be killed. We need to find another way."!<
-
>!The Emperor responds "There is no other way. An Illithid is needed to dominate the Netherbrain, and I cannot exist outside of the astral prism without absorbing the protection provided by Orpheus."!<
-
>!You can respond "What if Orpheus is willing to protect you? He could be freed and we could still be shielded from the Netherbrain."!<
-
>!The Emperor: "I told you: to Orpheus, you are Illithid. If you free him, he will kill you. Right after he kills me."!<
-
>!You can then make a persuasion check with a DC influenced by how much you've shown The Emperor trust thus far: "He will see reason. And if he doesn't, I will subdue him again. I won't let him hurt us."!<
-
>!If unsuccessful, The Emperor doesn't believe you, and you're brought back to the original dialogue options.!<
-
>!If successful, The Emperor will guardedly agree to let you free Orpheus. However, it doesn't trust that Orpheus will protect it if it leaves the astral prism, so it will refuse to go with you.!<
-
>!When Orpheus is freed, he will initially be hostile toward The Emperor and threaten to kill it for imprisoning him. You can pass a high persuation or intimidation check to convince him to see reason and work together for the common cause. Otherwise, you can side with him against The Emperor and help him kill it, or you can fight Orpheus. If the latter, you must knock him out; if you kill him, you get a Game Over.!<
-
>!If you convince Orpheus to stand down, you are then presented with the same choice as you would if you'd freed Orpheus without convincing The Emperor to stay. However, The Emperor becomes a powerful callable ally in the ensuing battle. It continues communicating with your party, and it has a tense but nonviolent interaction with Orpheus after the Netherbrain is defeated.!<
-
>!If you subdue Orpheus, Lae'zel is angry, but she will reluctantly agree in light of Orpheus's hostility that The Emperor consuming him is the only option.!<
-
>!If you help Orpheus kill The Emperor, the scene will proceed as if The Emperor abandoned you.!<
>!What do y'all think? Does this seem realistic, or am I off with any of the characters? What's your headcanon for this scene? !<
