Your explanation of federation that it "works like email" will be misunderstood
  • I can only speak for myself here but... A lot of things are taught in school. Most of them weren't something that I use everyday and thus have forgotten about it (some more than others, of course).

Ohm's Law would've been taught to me sometime during highschool (as the other commenter mentioned, I can tell you it relates to electricity but without looking it up I couldn't tell you the actual principle behind it) - I graduated from highschool 10 years ago, and have not had a reason to "flex" that memory ever since then.

  • It's Friday - What are your plans for the week-end?
  • Wednesdays and Thursdays are my weekend, so unfortunately its back to work for me.

  • Guys, what did you buy during the Steam autumn sale?
  • I picked up Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, I think that's really all I'm going to pickup honestly. Already have a fair bit in my backlog, and there's nothing else in my wishlist that makes me go "I want to play that right now" that can't just wait for another sale.

  • Discord now properly supports screensharing on linux
  • Ah, I thought this was in regards to AFK tracking when discord isn't focused (which this plugin still won't fix due to the mentioned Wayland restrictions) - I didn't realize that it still didn't work even when discord was focused, which is strange.

I've been using Vesktop since screen share wasn't working on Wayland, and it already seems to do what this plugin does hence my confusion.

  • Discord now properly supports screensharing on linux
  • I'm not sure if this is actually possible - as far as I know, applications can't track key presses/mouse movement when their associated window isn't in focus. It'd be great if they just gave the option to disable the AFK detection since it doesn't work...

  • Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of November 24th
  • A friend of mine got me Gears of War 5, so I think that'll be a good chunk of my game time this week. I haven't really played Gears since the 360 days (I believe I may have played an hour or two of Gears 5 on my XB1 long ago before I moved to PC), so it's great to get back into it!

As a plus, so far it seems to also run very well on my Steam Deck too.

  • Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of November 24th
  • I definitely need to get back into LE, I've hardly played for the last couple of cycles. Thanks for the reminder!

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's launch has been marred by long load times, server issues and now it has overwhelmingly negative reviews
  • All I wanted them to change was the fact that the installer for the game in 2020 would download then decompress one file at a time, so it took forever for the game to install (on top of the fact that it uses an in-game installer in the first place).

I don't have the new version, but based on what I've been reading they sure curled the monkey paw this time.

  • How is your week going?
  • I am tired. Very, very tired.

  • LG monitor asking about ad tracking preferences
  • (inb4 ethernet over HDMI: There is no implementation of the spec in the wild).

How about Thunderbolt? This looks like macOS, and while I'm not 100% sure if they utilize HDMI ports anymore, they certainly use Thunderbolt.

  • The worst feeling of my life:My vacation is ending tomorrow
  • I know the feeling, I just had a week off and returned to work on Friday a couple of days ago.

  • That is awful, Celiac's (and really any autoimmune disease) is no joke. I see a lot of parallels reflected in their post and I truly hate that for them so much - constantly struggling to find foods that you can tolerate, having numerous surgeries, seeing a million different doctors, being in and out of the hospital all the time to the point that its a second home, lab test after lab test that only result in more questions than answers, symptoms and other issues spiraling up due to complications of going through the condition - you name it.

I feel for them, every day feels like you've got the curse of Sisyphus. I feel like there has to be a solution for people like them and I, and its unfortunate that there is just so much about the body and its various systems that we don't understand. I constantly struggle with the idea that we've come so far with the sciences, and yet it feels like in matters of human physiology like the GI, immune, and nervous system we've barely scratched the surface.

  • Android makes me (almost) hate using a password manager – Google needs to fix it
  • That's quite unfortunate to hear. I use Bitwarden along with Gboard and very rarely run into issues - I believe most password managers have a quick settings toggle that you can add into your notification drawer to maybe get around this? From what I know though, these generally use the Accessibility framework to function, and thus will heavily depend on your password manager - it also gives a lot more access to those apps than the built in autofill framework.

Conversely I remember Bitwarden's autofill support on iOS being quirky when I last used it (which to be fair, has been a while - I'm sure its improved since then). IIRC it pretty much always worked in Safari (and Safari Web Views within apps), but the actual applications themselves wouldn't always give me the autofill prompt.

For me though, regardless of the platform it still is far more worth using a password manager and unique passwords per-site than to use a single password (or even a handful) across sites. I hope autofill support improves for those that it doesn't work well with.

  • I've had health issues since I was a kid (all stemming from developing Crohn's Disease symptoms before I was even a teenager), and a lot of them still haven't been resolved (in part of reasons such as developing new conditions due to medications I took to treat another condition). One of the worst things I fear is that if I randomly end up leaving this world in a way that incurs an autopsy, the results will end with something like "Damn, this man had issues. If his doctors had known about X then he could've lived a much better life, the treatment is simple".

I go through so much, and I've done countless research to try to track down possibilities that my doctors hadn't considered (some of my research has in fact lead to me finding out new things that my doctors didn't account for, even as of this year) - and I always have this terrifying doubt of "What if I had just chosen a different doctor, the next one on the list might've had this idea years ago and prevented some of this". That line of thinking of "Could've, should've, would've" doesn't help of course (as my friend likes to tell me "What if the sky were green?") but that doesn't stop me from thinking about it more often than I'd like to.

  • [Discussion] What games are you playing on your deck? - October 2024
  • A lot of Rocket League! Additionally I've been having a pretty good time with Star Trucker.

Then recently I've been streaming Helldivers 2 from my PC to my Deck while it's connected to the living room TV, which has been fun.

  • Google Phone appears to be testing a new incoming call UI
  • I thought this was a limitation on the carrier you used, rather than the brand of phone? While I've not used any Samsung phones (well, none that ran Android), I've gone through various carriers and some of them have supported VVM in the Google Phone app, and others don't seem to.

  • After 11 years, Xbox One emulators are finally coming to PC - but they're not actually using emulation at all
  • Jeez, no wonder Infinite has always had such a bad reputation then!

  • After 11 years, Xbox One emulators are finally coming to PC - but they're not actually using emulation at all
  • As far as I recall, Infinite has had online co-op, just not local/split screen co-op.

But don't quote me on that!

  • A new "Watch Unlock" feature seems to be rolling out

I just had this notification come up, not sure if it's exclusive to Pixel Watches (appears to be Pixel Watch exclusive currently) and Pixel phones - but seems to be a more "intelligent" version of Trusted Devices since supposedly the range is shorter, and it requires your watch to be unlocked.

Seems nice. If your phone is unlocked by the watch, a screen on the watch will appear for a few seconds that lets you relock the phone (and I suspect prevents it from unlocking again until the PIN is entered).

Obligatory "trust your surroundings" disclaimer if you enable this. I haven't had the opportunity to test the range yet, but I'll certainly enjoy it at home at the very least.

Google has a support document on this feature here - provided by @scottrepreneur@lemmy.world

Does the community list have a max amount of entries?

It seems like the communities list that comes up has less entries than I would expect it to, is there a max amount of communities that can show up, or a different type of filter? For example, I'm subscribed to the Summit community, but it only shows if I do a search for it.

Additionally, is there a way to change the sorting for it to alphabetical order, instead of by MAUs?

Hopefully I haven't missed something obvious, or I'll feel quite silly!

WearOS on the Pixel Watch finally supports DND sync again!

Back in the Android Wear says, this used to be a feature on my Moto 360, but then in WearOS' next generation/rebranding the feature was lost. Under the idea of separating the watch and phone they somehow just couldn't even include the setting to opt into this.

Just like setting off a timer or alarm on the phone would go off on the watch... Alarms are back (bidirectional too!) but not the timers sadly.

I guess we finally have the technology to sync the two devices again without an external app being installed on both.
