Bazzite 3.5 gets updated NVIDIA drivers, expanded handheld support (including Steam Deck OLED)
  • How is Bazzite as far as desktops/laptops go?

I've just switched over to linux last week from Windows and i'm hooked. But now I find i'm just looking at all the various distros trying to figure out which one would be best for me. Right now I'm on Mint/cinnamon and it's great. but I've had my eye on CachyOS, Nobara, and Bazzite.

I wanted to try out Bazzite via live usb but it doesn't have that option. So I'm just curious what people who use it think of it.

Edit: decided to go with CachyOS. bit harder to set up and get going then Mint but I managed to pull it off and actually prefer it. super fast too.

  • Is 13 too young to work? A Saskatchewan proposal has reignited debate around kids and labour
  • this doesn't make a lick of sense. I know 16 year olds who WANT to work and can't even find jobs because of the foreign temp workers/international students. Saskatchewan wants to allow 13 year olds? why? there's literally no point. A business that is already more than willing to take advantage of a potential employee is still going to favor some "student" from India over a 13 year old Canadian kid. you can take more advantage of the Indian kid as opposed to the 13 year old Kid.

This is one massive nothing burger.

Why so many Torontonians have fled to other parts of Canada
  • honestly I'd move to Montreal but my french is absolutely dreadful and just never "stuck" from school. If I need to know your name, your age, how you're doing and who cut the cheese(farted)? sure I'm all over that. everything else? not so much.

  • Singh makes his case to Alberta’s new NDP leader amid party separation talks
  • do it. and Singh needs to step down. Guy doesn't have an original thought in his head and is more concerned about optics than anything else. Dude should have been a liberal with how similar he is to Trudeau.

  • Why so many Torontonians have fled to other parts of Canada
  • it's because they're afraid to rattle those cages. Same reason why it's always "companies want workers to return to the office, here's why" and never "Here's WHY employees don't want to return to the office". They don't want to piss off the powers that be for fear of hurting their already very fragile media business.

"oh you're knocking our company for stagnate wages? for forcing people to come back to the office? ok well we're going to directly hurt your ad revenue by pulling our ads from your paper/site"

  • Alice Madness Returns director American McGee issues another statement on the canned EA sequel, hoping the developer will "see the light."
  • best thing EA can do is just drop the rights to it back to American McGee and let him fumble his way to a third game. His die hard fans, of which there are many, will love it but I imagine it would get critically panned just like all his other games with the exception of the first Alice.

Many former id guys when they go out on their own don't have the best track record.

  • He can't afford to rent an apartment. So this man secretly sleeps in an office
  • know someone who did this recently. lived in their "office" that they rented for like $300 a month for just over a year while they got back on their feet. It was easy. it was a pretty small building with a few offices in it, no onsite security, cleaners only cleaned the hallways and common area and only did it during the day. it was a building full of "start ups" so it wasn't uncommon for people to be there late or even overnight so he just blended in and could come and go as he pleased. only issue naturally was showering but there was a goodlife across the street so he just got a membership to shower there.

I mean if you can find a similar space then I say why not? go for it. He said it was easier to rent that office space than it was to rent an apartment. didn't need references, no credit check, no competition so you're not gonna get out bid, literally just said that he'll take it, paid $600, signed a lease, and that was it. moved in the same day.

  • How Alice: Madness Returns Found New Life on the Internet Long After the Departure of Its Creator - IGN
  • my ex-girlfriend loved the first game, she even got a massive tattoo of the cat on her back. The second game? it was horrible. It took everything that was great about the first game and just said "fuck it" and toss it out the window. graphically it was nice but it just lacked that insanity of the first game, the story was weak and just didn't draw you in like the first did.

And make no mistake McGee, on his own, is a one trick pony. He got fired from Id for bad level designs (which, depending on who you ask is controversial) he knocked it out of the park with Alice, but fumbled with Madness Returns and...ugh...Bad Day LA which NO ONE remembers.

So I mean kudos to fans that like this game but only if McGee stays far away from a potential third game in the series I wouldn't hold out much hope.

  • Cash transactions are way down. These advocates say the feds need to do something
  • but then you have the hurdle of actually being able to join a credit union. I remember a couple years ago I was trying to help one of my clients get a credit union account (who was homeless but working) and he couldn't get it. don't remember the specific reason but I do know we went across the street and was able to open a scotiabank account.

It was Merdian bank so don't know how good they are. I figuerd the credit union would be easier to work with in his case since like you said there's no minimum fees, I was wrong.

  • Cash transactions are way down. These advocates say the feds need to do something
  • also need to keep cash around for poor people. when I was homeless 10 years ago if cash wasn't a thing I would have been well and truly fucked.

You also need to further lower the barrier of entry for simply getting a bank account. Make it so, once again in Ontario at least, your OHIP card is a valid id to open an account. Because if you go cashless and you don't have a bank account you'll never get one. costs money to get a valid form of ID here to open one. Hell I know people who don't even have bank accounts because they can't afford it. They can't afford the monthly fee. they either get paid in cash or have somenoe cash their paycheques for them.

  • PC gaming is mainstream. Now what?
  • I mean it's already practically there. I made the switch from Windows to Linux this past week. I've been able to get World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and Elden Ring all working on it. and the "hardest" one to get going/install was WoW only because I needed to install one script to get working. FFXIV and Elden Ring worked right out of the box on steam.

  • People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • I only just switched to Linux this past week and I use Mint. It was suggested to me by someone here on lemmy. It was easy to set up, customize, and get all my stuff working on it. I have World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Elden Ring and a few other games all working on it. The only issue, and right now it's a minor one, I'm having is the 535 nividia drivers can cause random stutters/lag every now and then but nothing major.

My point is for people like me who are new to linux and don't want to get overwhelmed I think Mint is great. I know eventually i'll change to a different more "advanced" distro, right now I have my eye on CachyOS, but I don't think I'm there quite yet to confidently install it.

  • Abbotsford student's speech about accessibility challenges at her school censored by administrators
  • My sister is an elementary school principal and she is absolutely infuriating. she's smart don't get me wrong, book smarts that is. Went to university twice, got her masters, she skipped 8th grade when she was a kid.

However when it comes to common sense/street smarts...oh boy. dumb as a pile of rocks. Took her god knows how many times to pass her driving exam. Written test? no problem, aced it the first try. the actual DRIVING portion? failed it god knows how many times to the point the instructor just couldn't comprehend how someone who knew all the rules, everything, on the written test couldn't transfer that to actually using it. Common sesne is a foreign concept to her. Like the most basic things that you and I do in everyday life boggle her mind.

To top it all off, she hates kids. I shit you not she's been a teacher/principal for nearly two decades and cannot stand kids. Her husband wanted children but she said no, she doesn't want kids - to quote her "I really can't stand children". It's like saying I can't stand pizza, it makes me sick, so I'm gonna go work at Pizza Pizza and make a god damn career out of it.

My point is the principal in this case is a douche and administration is no better so reading stories like this doesn't surprise me at all. They really pick from the bottom of the barrel to fill those roles.

Needless to say my sister and I do not get along.

  • Alberta School Boards are Cutting Hundreds of Teaching Positions Next Year, Teachers’ Association Says
  • eventually schools will be named after corporations like "Scotiabank Cambridge Elementary School" and it'll be like that episode of the simpsons where the school has run out of money and they teach the kids using some textbook written by Oscar Myer or something.

  • having issues with Vivaldi stuttering
  • it was the nvidia 535 driver. I switched to nouveau and that solved the stuttering/lag. but made gaming suck. so then I tried installing 550 drivers and that just outright bricked my system, recovered and went back to the 535. works for gaming so I'll just tolerate the stuttering I guess.

  • having issues with Vivaldi stuttering

I'm new to linux and have been using Linux Mint (Cinnamon) for the past few days. I was using Vivaldi on Windows 11 and I loved it so I decided to also use it on Mint.

However the problem now is it "stutters" a lot. videos stutter, even typing (like right now) it just randomly stutters and pauses. Also sometimes it simply won't open a new tab. So I don't know if this is common with Vivaldi or what.

I'm open to using a different browser as long as I can port over my passwords and bookmarks from vivaldi. is there a better alternative?

    Thanks.

EDIT: so it wasn't the browser, it's the nvidia drivers. the 535 driver is causing it to stutter, tried switching to nouveau drivers and while it solves the stuttering it tanks gaming. tried installing the 550 drivers and it bricked my system. recovered and just going to deal with the stuttering of the 535 for now.
