Nexus mods want feedback from Linux / Steam Deck users on their new cross-platform app
  • UX is pretty painful. I'm never sure if its bugging or if I'm doing it wrong or working and now needs me to do some other step.

I've modded to hell and back with Minecraft, Skyrim, and every Paradox game. So it was kind of shocking just how hard modding in Linux was with Vortex.

  • Lemmings do you feel like you are falling behind in your area of expertise?
  • I went from being "to forward thinking" in my last job, to catching up with what cutting edge IT setups can be even some state of the art stuff too.

I take heart knowing that despite the pace of innovation the reality is it takes a lot of time and effort for things to really go into practice.

K8s for example is just now getting "boring" for the early adopters IMHO. Its crazy how long its been going and how many systems are built on it, but there are plenty of diverse opinions on implementions still.

  • Lemmings do you feel like you are falling behind in your area of expertise?
  • Yeah the trend for byod seems inevitable path for client side IMHO. Barring some zeitgeist change

I was asked how to support a large suit of client apps once and honestly to me it was use web apps, and VDI the rest. Strip the clients of as much configs as possible just advanced monitors and run everything in linux containers in k8s.

Let's user drown in whatever OS they want to and keep our jobs sane and separate.

At least for enterprise and honestly at home do the same thing, but fully byod except those that need a managed desktop (then also Linux it).

  • On the Internet, what is a dead giveaway that someone is actually a kid?
  • You would need some real insurance that others were commuted to vote 3rd party no matter what. Otherwise the real benifit is just getting to that 5% mark where third parties get some bennies like federal funding and automatic ballot access in some places. Which is minor vs say stopping a campaign of vengeance from a candidate who has acted feloniously already and has abused his position to black bag political opponents before.

  • What is *love*?
  • Different cultures have different takes but greek and Latin define different forms of love. From impulsive maddening love (why cupids arrow was seen so harmful) to dutiful love (the kind made through obligations made through shared commitments and aspirations) to brotherly love (trauma bonds, solidarity, commitment made from shared respect). There is also paternalistic love formed from empathy and a desire to protect. And of course love to describe the deep joy something gives you and desire to have it again.

When they ask "do you love her?" Based on the context I assume either or both love as a desire for the other or dutiful love, because both can be consuming for many and mean they would struggle to have that the capacity to share that same level of love with their current partner.

If they don't and it was an act of lust* or curiosity then they're partner may feel more comfortable with the commitment to them.

    • impulsive love and desire can be heavily intertwined with sexual desire but that is a whole other interesting discussion to me
  • Linux in the military
  • I'm super excited to see SLES more in the US government space with RGS. RedHat was my goto champion of FOSS in public sector but since they have gone less Libre/FOSS SUSE is last big commercial Linux company still going commuting to FOSS.

  • Props to Alpine and Kali for disabling this bullshit out of the box
  • No idea what mactab is, but maybe it solves it for me, but being able to go from interface name back to a rack full of heterogeneous PCI cards and go "yep it should be this port" was a wildly useful feature.

I feel like there should be automatic alias creation for simply interface names though.

  • What's the worst invention of the 21st century?
  • Full scale mass surveillance capitalism. Governments used to have to hire agents, dress them up, and have them bug peoples phones. Now they can just buy it in bulk. No warrent, no black site op, just cashing checks.

  • What's the worst invention of the 21st century?
  • Dude the phone "app" is 100% on the list for me too.

As a stop gap between good web design including PWAs it made sense at a time, but 99% of apps are just bloated websites that data and power for no noticeable gains...

  • Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman
  • His view did evolve after being talked to later about it. On the grounds that power dynamics involved in age differences create a coercive effect of even someone who could be mature enough to logically and emotionally grasp the concepts.

He is also deeply in the libertarian mind set that illegal means enforced with guns and batons and restrictions of rights, and that puts a higher bar to what should be legal.

Though I do totally agree with you on hero worship. Nobody is perfect and that impossibility is expontetially more true if want them to have been, to be and continue to be perfect forever.

  • Seriously, where do I go?
  • Online talk and in person talk differ. I know some people that bluster about how we need to get rid of x kind of people but if you confront them about yourself, friends, or family most people back peddle.

I created an AI-powered Social Network - Yannic Kilcher

Not me, but I honestly, this seems like a cool idea. I like the idea of possibly creating a fine tunned model per user that translates vibes to what would resonate better with another person.

    Peertube to Lemmy mismatches

    > Hey everyone, I saw this post about peertube channels being able to be seen as communities on lemmy, but I noticed that the comments don't show on the community post. > > I was wondering if anyone else was tracking anything about this already, or any other peertube to lemmy integrations, like the embedded video playback from peertube (new feature) or peertube's remote account features (comment using any fediverse account) not working with Lemmy users (at least not me right now). > > Matrix chat about it

AMD Ryzen AI hardware, currently unsupported on Linux
    github.com Linux? · Issue #2 · amd/RyzenAI-SW

https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMD-Ryzen-AI-Open-Source-Demo AMD Has Open-Source Ryzen AI Demo Code - But Only For Windows

    Linux? · Issue #2 · amd/RyzenAI-SW

Does anyone know if/when AMD will support Linux on their new NPU? If it's never or too far out, what is everyone else looking towards for open source AI development?

This issue is apparently tracking the Linux communities request for it.

Has anyone looked at codifying community control of communities before?
    communityrule.info About / CommunityRule

A governance toolkit for great communities

Hello all, I am just curious if anyone has taken a tool like community rule to define how their instance or community control is handled? Even more so if there has been any effort to make the actual decision-making actionable by the system.

Cool seeming project make more open matrix communities with plans to integrate with the ActivityPub standard. I really like the idea personally of being able to quickly turn a chat thread into a wider post/thread.

    IPv6 mutli-GB jumbo frames?

Has anyone messed with using the very large jumbo frames for IPv6 for anything like video transfer, or large file transfers?

I'm curious if anyone has done it for firewall overhead reduction too
