So disappointed
  • Pass - Proton team picked up light theme recently so I'm guessing it will available in a year or so :)

Drive - had no described issues. I can search photos using its names. However, photos are not searchable through the web app.

VPN - true, dark mode only which sucks but honestly, I open it only where there's an issue with the VPN which is rare nowadays.

What I can say it that Proton products are for somehow "aware" users, which are not discourage by occasional issues. I would say it's a late beta state of things. I've been a happy Proton customer for quite few years and cannot complain about it. The best thing is that when I had an issue, I've raised a support ticket and within a day or two it got fixed. Or if it was an user(aka me) issue, it got explained with as much details as I needed.

  • Thought on Graphene?
  • I've been using GrapheneOS for over a year. I cannot complain about it, it works as advertised and it does it the best way possible. However, here's the list of things I find annoying/missing. Keep in mind, this is a subjective list.

    • some (quite a lot of for me) apps require Google Play Framework (or whatever the name is) to work properly
    • Aurora store tends to be unavailable randomly, which makes installation/updates difficult sometimes
    • some features are wonky, e.g. GrapheneOS has no issues with disabling wifi when leaving my home but I was never able to enable wifi when I'm back home.
    • default apps work ok-ish but it's far from good old iOS/Android experience
    • Android Auto experience was a shitshow for me
  • Update on 'Best "convertible" or 2-in-1 device to run Linux on?' (Minisforum V3 first impressions)
  • Linux distros are barely just getting their feet wet in the tablet/mobile world. I would say "barely just getting their toe wet" :)

Getting back to the point. I loved the way iPad was integrated with the stylus (Apple Pencil). My use case for a tablet back then was to write/draw stuff I did "remotely" and export all my, let's call it drawings, to mac and work on that. Today's example. I was planning a garden layout. It took me way too much time to get the stylus working the way I expected and when it did I had more issues trying to export the drawings to a usable format* I would be better off with a good old pen and paper.

    • I'm not a pro Linux user so there's a good chance I missed something
  • Update on 'Best "convertible" or 2-in-1 device to run Linux on?' (Minisforum V3 first impressions)
  • It is usable but I've been using iPad for years before trying Linux on a tablet and it's way behind iPadOS in terms of ux and ease of use. The latest plasma mobile makes it more tablety but it still feels like a desktop with touch support. Having said that, I'm pretty happy with plasma mobile and can't wait for further improvements.

  • Update on 'Best "convertible" or 2-in-1 device to run Linux on?' (Minisforum V3 first impressions)
  • I wrote it several times and I will write it again. Linux on a tablet is at best average. However, after recent release of KDE 6, plasma mobile got really good. In tablet mode it feels almost like a real thing. I've been using it for some time now and I like the experience.

  • What do you think the Great Filter is?
  • I read an article about Fermi paradox (I cannot find the link) that stated the humans are one of the first intelligent beings in the universe. That's why we haven't encountered any green men so far. We just might came too soon to the party.

  • Doorbell kamera solution
  • I was about to suggest the same thing with a small caveat. From what I know, communication between doorbell and base station is unencrypted. I might be wrong, it's been a while since I read about it, so double check the current status.

  • What are you insecure about?
  • I have a mild speech impairment. I don't stutter on a daily basis but when I'm under heavy stress or when I'm tired I tend to stutter-ish. On top of that I live in a country where I don't speak in my native language and sometimes I feel self-conscious about small mistakes I make (like using the wrong word or messing up the grammar) which induces the stress response. It's not a big deal but it makes me crazy when I can't express my thoughts in public.

  • Why Is There an AI Hype? | The Luddite
  • It's just history repeating itself. We've seen dotcom bubble, web 2.0 rush, nft fiasco and now AI. All fueled by VC greed. On top of that in today's world companies try to get as much data as possible and so called AI is the perfect tool for that.

  • What do you just not give a single fuck about that so many people try to make you give a shit about?
  • I think you didn't understand my answer. Let me give you an example. If I say "I like oranges more than apples", normal people will think "ok, this guy likes oranges more than apples". But modern, progressive people who care about political correctness will call me applefobic.

People got too sensitive growing in the secure bubbles and when exposed to a real world with a real science, statistics and opinions get offended over nothing.

  • Do you avoid discussing some topics online even if you have something you'd like to say about them?
  • If the question is open, e.g. "do you like apples?" and the question is in my area of interest, I usually give an answer. But if the question assumes an answer or is deliberately polarizing, e.g. "why don't you like apples?" I pass.

  • How can I install Alpaka, ollama client?

I've been using open webui for some time but I wanted to test the Alpaka, a KDE app - https://apps.kde.org/alpaka/

When I click on an "Install on linux" button, Discover app is opening and gives me this error "Could not open appstream://org.kde.alpaka because it was not found in any available software repositories." When using dnf there's no such package as Aplaka. I can find and install other KDE apps. What am I missing?

I'm on Fedora 40, KDE spin.

Is Proton working on AI assistant?

Earlier today I received an email from Proton with an annual survey. Among standard questions there was a significant amount of AI related questions, e.g. mail assistant. Does it mean Proton is looking into AI?

How to sync Akregator across devices?

I'm a happy user of Inoreader. I like it so much I'm considering buying a premium plan. However, I'm looking for an alternative I wouldn't have to pay for. I came across FreshRSS. The only thing that's keeps me from moving is the sync. I don't want to expose it to the internet but I want to be able to access it on a move. My first idea was to use Syncthing. Is there a way to use Syncthing to sync feeds, settings (read articles, subscriptions, etc.) across different devices? By different devices I mean Linux, macOS (optional) and GrapheneOS (Android) phone.

Couple questions about Proton Pass settings

I just stared using Proton Pass, moved from Bitwarden. I have few simple questions about Proton Pass configuration.

    1. How can I switch to light theme on the website and in the Firefox addon?
    2. How can I get rid of the available passwords counter on Firefox addon?

How can I add Spotify to Android Auto?

Is there a way to add Spotify to Android Auto running GrapheneOS? So far I have gotten to the point where I can add a new shortcut using the Assistant command. However, no matter what I tried, I wasn't able to add Spotify to the apps.

Is rsync.net a good service for backups?

I've been playing around with the self hosted apps for quite a while and I got to the point where I'm happy about my local setup. Next step is to setup reliable offsite backup. I'm using borgbackup as a tool to manage my backups (so far only local backups). I've been looking for an affordable yet reliable service to store my backups. Is rsync.net worth it? According to the "internet" it's a good service but wanted to double check. What do you think about it?
