Raise Wages? No Need — McDonald’s Is Hiring Inmates Instead
  • Is this also a consequence of allowing prisons to be privately owned?

I could totally understand a government owned prison, using prison labor for federal departments such as maintenance and landscaping etc.

As awful as this is, private prisons abusing loopholes as a way to make evem more profits, its hardly surprising

  • California governor signs law banning all plastic shopping bags at grocery stores.
  • There are other reusable bag options that are not plastic. I'm also strongly opposed to the reusable bag options which supermarkets offer because most are platic but you can get plenty of nice cotton or hessian material type bags around.

I'm a bag fan of banning single use plastic but it should definitely go to the extent of even reusable plastic because its been demonstrated that reusable plastic options aren't that much more sustainable.

  • Making GUIs, how do you pick?
  • Time, experience and a lot of mistakes. Everyone who has been programming/scripting has made their fair share of mistakes along their journey.

Sometimes you just have to pick one, start it and see how it goes.

  • One big happy family.
  • I've been using Pop for years, I just feel like its always worked so well for me and never given me any major gripes. Web browsing, playing a few basic games, editing documents and even recently setting up another home server with it for media streaming with Jellyfin.

I'm a big advocate for any OS which works well out the box and is mostly hands off once configured!

If PopOS isn't your thing you'll find it eventually 🙂

  • Windows Security Remediation Incomplete
  • This will almost certainly be a false positive, its a heuristics(I think that's the correct term) based detection, basically just matches certain characteristics of files that have been related to that trojan.

These days Defender has exceptional real time malware scanning capabilities, it often picks up stuff as you download it or even as it executes. If this was a detection of an existing file, its very likely a false positive.

  • What part of your life could be improved with software?
  • I had this idea for a browser extension when I'm doing research.

Basically, its like a panel on the side for writing notes but also has a button to screenshot the current open page, then maybe a button to copy the contents so I can paste it elsewhere to a document.

It sounds super basic, but I just want something so that when I'm researching I don't have to keep jumping between windows when researching.

  • ‘Hold them captive’: Australian billionaire boss aims to end staff going out for coffee
  • This is all about building your personal life around work, this guy knows that current WFH initiatives are giving people better flexibility for work to fit around their personal lives.

The things he's offering to basically hold his employees captive for the day, are quite decent. I just don't see them being attractive to people long term.

  • What's an impulse purchase you've made and it turned out to be awesome?

So I kind of impulsively bought a Steam Deck OLED this weekend, I hadn't really done much research and I haven't really played any games in about 15 years.

Now I have to wait for it to be delivered and, I'm worried this is something I'll use a few times and forget about it.

What's something you impulsively bought and fell in love with?
