ELI5 If Trump is a supposed billionaire why does he keep promoting cheap crap to get money?
  • I believe that it is illegal, yes (I’m not a lawyer). But that is the point. They can “buy” a bunch of cheap useless stuff from him instead of giving him money. That’s the essence of money laundering. Do something that superficially looks legitimate so that you can move a bunch of money that would otherwise be illegal.

  • ELI5 If Trump is a supposed billionaire why does he keep promoting cheap crap to get money?
  • For sure. But of course dude tried a coup on live tv and we are having trouble getting the justice system to hold him to account. So getting proof of the NFT scheme that I outlined as a hypothetical is probably going to be harder.

  • ELI5 If Trump is a supposed billionaire why does he keep promoting cheap crap to get money?
  • A lot of his value is tied up in assets that aren’t liquid (real estate). Also he is probably not worth as much as he says.

But the main reason is that these “cheap crap” things you mention are probably vehicles for money laundering from foreign actors. The best example are the NFTs he was hawking for awhile. Costs next to nothing to make and foreign states can buy a ton of them to give him money without it being easy to detect. Even if it is detected it is still legal to buy silly NFTs, right? Certainly more so than a foreign government giving a candidate bags of cash for nothing.

  • LAPD raid goes from bad to farce after gun allegedly sucked onto MRI machine
  • The machine is only loud when it is actively scanning a patient which it doesn’t seem like was happening in this case. Otherwise it’s relatively silent. Also the big button is (in my experience at multiple hospitals) always in a different room behind a box that you have to open. My point being this wasn’t some knee jerk reflex where he had the gun pulled out of his hands and he slapped the button. He physically had to leave the room and find the button to do this.

  • In ref to parents bringing their kids to Hazbin Hotel panels
  • This sounds well and good but it depends a lot on your kid’s personality. I’ve tried to always be open and honest with my kid about every topic they have questions about but I don’t go out of my way to put adult content in front of them. That said I feel like I’ve had to learn over time when to temper my responses because I felt like I was contributing to unnecessary anxiety.

Having a young child worry about pandemics, nuclear weapons, etc just isn’t really productive because their mind isn’t capable of weighing risk and likelihoods the way an adult can. My kid refused to go outside and play for two days because (he asked) I told him that C. botulinum lives in the soil outside. Triggered a full blown panic attack that we would get botulism if we left the house, despite having been outside many times before that.

So yeah, I’m not trying to set my child up for a “the future is all rainbows” but I am now trying to be a little more moderate at what and when I introduce topics.

  • LAPD raid goes from bad to farce after gun allegedly sucked onto MRI machine
  • The mechanism they are describing here is the emergency one (like if a human is trapped against the machine by something metal and is being crushed - you need to kill the magnet NOW). There is a slower, much safer mechanism for deactivating the magnet that should have been used here but that would require the officer admitting he had made a mistake and asking for help.

Also I just want to point out that the rifle should be considered no longer safe to use unless thoroughly inspected by an expert. In a similar case some years back, the police officer’s sidearm was pulled into the machine. After retrieval it was found that the weapon had been magnetized by the scanner and as a result the firing pin was able to spontaneously release.

  • Senate chairman demands answers from emergency rooms that denied care to pregnant patients
  • I’m biased but putting the onus on doctors here completely misses the point in my opinion. Let me just point out that this isn’t a “policy change” - these states have made it illegal to perform these procedures. In at least one state the physician can go to prison.

In an idealistic worldview we can expect every person to do the morally optimal thing every time without regard to consequences but that simply isn’t realistic. You are basically advocating that physicians should be jumping to break the law and therefore endanger themselves. That just is not a realistic expectation of any person.

Tl;dr - Physicians are just people and are not the ones that created this situation. They are normal people and expecting them to sacrifice career/freedom to help one patient is beyond what is realistic.

  • Doctor skillfully compares overeating with alcohol addiction and how we can get it under control
  • That’s true for a certain percentage but misses part of the point here. Once an alcoholic has successfully detoxed, it is possible and highly encouraged that they do not partake any alcohol going forward.

That simply isn’t possible with obesity as humans require food to survive. So this is where the analogy with alcoholism breaks down as it is never possible for the obese person to be the equivalent of “sober.” Instead they have to learn moderation which is conceptually a different challenge than becoming a teetotaler.

  • PSA: Don't just eat peanut butter
  • the girl who only ate carrots and turned orange.

I can confirm this is a real thing. When I was a kid my step-mother went on this fad diet that involved drinking carrot juice every day. It was this whole production where she bought a juicer and I remember multiple large bags of carrots coming in the house. There was always leftover carrot pulp in the trash, etc. Anyways she went wild with it for a time and sure enough her skin started turning slightly orange, mostly along her forearms where the skin was thin.

That’s when the carrot juice stopped.

So yeah she wasn’t an Oompa Loompa but it was definitely a visible change.

  • They almost made a truck with the Silverado EV but then they had to turn it into whatever the Avalanche is supposed to be with fins coming off the cab that get in the way of things. Anyways, not to sound bitter but some people like to be able to put camper shells, tool boxes, or other accoutrement on the back.

R1T is decent, just really expensive.

  • I think everyone should listen to Taylor Swift.
  • You talking about Tortured Poets Department? Jokes aside about recommending a popular artist as an ‘unpopular’ opinion - I actually do disagree. I’m a pretty solid Swift fan but TPD doesn’t really do anything for me. I’ve listened to the whole album a couple of times and I found the songs all kind of samey and forgettable.

If you want to introduce people to Swift, I’d vote for “All Too Well” which I think is just such a brilliant, relatable song about unrequited love.

Edit: Currently relistening to TPD and I have to admit Florida!!! is better than I remembered.

  • Help! No monsters are spawning if I have 3 players in world.

I have a 3 player vanilla survival realm and everything has been working fine for 100-200 hours of gameplay until this past weekend. We noticed that monsters suddenly weren’t spawning when all three players are in the game. If one player leaves, monsters immediately begin spawning. It doesn’t matter which player leaves the game.

    Things I’ve tried:

    • Set game to peaceful for some time (force all hostile mobs to despawn) then back to normal difficulty.
    • Player 1 was playing on PC and tried switching to Xbox X.
    • Player 3 has a child account: age was set to 21+.
    • Tried eliminating many non-hostile mobs in case we were near the limit.
    • Tried downloading the game to my Xbox and hosting locally. Still no mobs even though Realms wasn’t involved.

We are playing Bedrock edition 1.20.51. This is my son’s first time playing survival and he is super invested in our world. We are all frustrated that one person has to log out for the others to fight monsters. Please help!
