Is it worth getting into video games?
  • Yes. I highly recommend it. You don't need to get a high end gaming PC or spend a lot of money on new titles. You can go to websites like GOG (DRM-Free games), or Steam (more mainstream platform with more games) to pick up some older games at massive discounts, and they are likely to run well on your normal PC with minimal spending to test the waters. If you enjoy it and want to spend more money for a better experience with newer games, that's entirely optional.

What kind of games are you interested in?

  • When I buy a physical book, am I entitled to scan for myself?
  • Not a lawyer, and I don't recommend asking for legal advice on a random forum. From an ethical standpoint, I see it as perfectly ethical as long as it's for personal use and you don't give anyone access to it. With that said, if you ever sell the physical copy of the book, I think ethically you'll have to delete all the copies you've made.

  • What are the "AK-47" of items? (cheap, durable, just works)
  • That's awesome. My brother has the AKG K7XX, I'm guessing they sound similar, because I remember being impressed with these. I assume the QJ are just a different tune, and more padding on the headband.

I recently ordered the Sennheiser HD 58X, but I was looking at the AKG options too.

  • Is there any hope for me?
  • Exactly. I used to be bad at it, but then I discovered Chef John from Food Wishes and this got me to cook better, and these days there are so many incredible cooking creators on YouTube that I have an endless stream of inspiration.

P.S. If you like Italian cuisine, I highly recommend watching Italia Squisita.

  • Is there any hope for me?
  • Awesome that you have a job. If you like cooking, I highly recommend getting as much knowledge from free platforms like YouTube, there are a lot of great and passionate creators to learn from, and their enthusiasm is infectious. Watch videos, try to pay attention to techniques more than the recipes themselves. Keep an open mind and jump at opportunities when you see them.

    I believe in you!

  • Is there any hope for me?
  • It can be very demoralizing, but remember that IQ is only a part of intelligence, and grades in school matter a lot less than you think. Also C's and B's are respectable grades. Focus on the things you are good at and enjoy doing. Do you like animals? There are people who pay for grooming or dogsitting. Maybe you have a good sense of humor and can make it as a comedian. Perhaps you like outdoors and plants?

Please don't give up and lean into your strengths.

  • What are the "AK-47" of items? (cheap, durable, just works)
  • You're correct, GrapheneOS is just for privacy and security, not to keep devices out of the landfill. LineageOS keeps devices up for super long. The first gen Pixel is still officially supported with Android 14, and I've seen an unofficial build for a Nexus 4, a 2012 phone...

  • What are the "AK-47" of items? (cheap, durable, just works)
  • A discontinued product from AKG called the K-330. The sound, even though nothing to get excited about, was decent, but the durability of these, in my opinion is legendary. When I was a teenager, I was not careful with them at all, and would often forget them in my sweatpants pockets before throwing them into the washing machine, and that happened hundreds of times and it's not an exaggeration. The cable was mostly tangle free, while everyone else had to untangle their earbuds (something that most modern earbud cables can't seem to do as well). These went through abuse more than any other device I've ever owned, and they kept working no matter what. Audio quality wise, they are overpriced in my opinion (I think the MSRP was $100, but because not many bought them, I got them on sale as a teen), but the durability is Nokia level in my opinion.

  • Given the option which is your preferred overall display setup: 2k/120hz or 4k/60hz?
  • High res is amazing for productivity, but unimportant for gaming.

Higher refresh rate is nice at all times, but in gaming it's especially great.

Since I don't play nearly as much as I did, and don't play any competitive games, I lean towards higher resolution. Maybe I'll be able to get one of these fancy 4k and high refresh rate monitors used eventually.

  • K-9 Mail is now Thunderbird
  • Yeah, took me by surprise to see thunderbird on my phone. I remember talks about K9 planning to join the Thunderbird project and got excited, but completely forgot about it until I saw it on my phone.

  • What was the last skill you learned and how?
  • Love whistling. I learned it as a teen and drove my parents mad practicing.

While I am not inept in the kitchen, I only recently figured out how to get the classic French omelette consistently right. It's harder than it looks to get it looking flawless like that with an ultra thin exterior layer and perfectly creamy inside, and not ruining the structure when rolling it on the edge of the pan. I followed the instructions of the legendary chef, Jacques Pepin, in this video, and supplemented by the wonderful videos of chef motokichi (link). They make it look super easy because they are extremely skilled.

  • Who are the good guys in the Israel/Palestine conflict?
  • Israel are absolutely and undeniably the bad guys. To use an analogy, imagine a school bully who is stronger and gets the support of the teachers and principal of the school, and the bully beats up the smaller kid every day until they hit a breaking point and throws a punch back. A reasonable school would support the bullied kid, but in this case, the principal just gives the bully a gun and looks away.

Israel has been dehumanizing and oppressing the Palestinian people since it's inception and things have been getting worse. When October 7th happen, it was indeed horrible and many civilians got hurt, but Israel's response was so completely disproportionately mad that they are actively committing genocide, treating the list of warcrimes like a to-do list.

  • What's the strangest insult that you have ever received/given?
  • Was she particularly skinny? A friend of mine with a similar problem explained that because she was very skinny (actual eating disorder), any slightly hard surface puts pressure on her bones (especially ribs) painfully even when doing it gently, and she would feel pain even by sitting on a chair without a pillow between her body and the wood surface. Muscle and fat help coushon and spread the pressure across a larger area so most people don't experience this pain.

Should we A) colonise other planets or B) build habitats in the middle of space, like O'Neill Cylinders and stuff?
  • Terraforming other planets would be astronomically more challenging than fixing our own planet and we don't seem to be able to get our shit together to do that. Even if we are capable of terraforming other planets, it would take many centuries at minimum. O'Neal cylinders are far more likely to work once we start industrializing the moon.

If you've got thermal paste on the CPU or on the socket, there is a very easy solution.

I accidentally got some thermal paste on the CPU pins and on the socket when I removed the cooler and it pulled the CPU with it (this only happens with PGA sockets, never with LGA sockets), I spent hours trying to clean it with alcohol and a soft brush, but it didn't work so well.

I got a contact cleaning spray and it cleaned it in seconds.

Am I crazy, or Infinity still works for me?

I wasn't expecting it to work, but I didn't uninstall the app just in case Reddit backtracks or something. I checked and my front-page loads like normal. Does that mean that Reddit gave up? I didn't pay infinity at all...

Share a fic that you have reread multiple times, and why you'd recommend it

It can be either ongoing, or completed.

I'll start: Zenith of Stars AO3, FFN by Yuesya/XxZuiliu.

This is a Jujutsu Kaisen fic, and the protagonist has the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception from the Nasuverse. I enjoyed it because it was incredibly well written, and has a good balance between character dynamics, action, and clan politics. Highly recommended.
