How do you clean your smart watch?
  • The allergy part may sound outlandish but it happened to me with headphones. They were made of some kind of rubbery plastic which was absolutely fine for the first 2 years I used them, and then they became impossible to wear. Cleaning the headphones did nothing and the allergy got pretty gross, I had to see a doctor. Fortunately an ointment fixed my ears but I had to get new headphones. My guess is that the material they were made of started to degrade/change chemically with time, like faux leather and rubber does, and my skin developed an allergy to it.

  • How different would civilization be if humans had "mating season" ?
  • Does it happen en masse or does each woman have their own heat season? Say, does everyone go crazy during the same 2-3 weeks or does it vary per person like it happens with periods?

In the masse heat I think there would be some obvious differences in stuff like festivities and each culture would adapt to these seasons. There would be a need to gather and store resources before the rut, and also to be prepared for the inevitable birthing en masse to come. We would probably have public holidays for the mating seasons and festivities for birthing season. In contemporary times, hospitals would need to do some heavy work planning and preparing maternity ward space to accommodate the seasonal influx. That's just what pops to mind.

Not too sure about the differences in the second case though. One option is, women would be allowed to retreat from society and become hermits during heat if they want to avoid pregnancy and this would be totally normal. Or, some cultures would lock them to prevent them getting pregnant. Coming to think of it, I think having women randomly in some kind of irresistible heat like this would be very disruptive and impossible to prepare for so I don't see much happening in the way of gender equality and women's rights sadly. I'm inclined to think the re would be a lot of gender based extreme segregation.

  • When is it "enough" money?
  • There isn't an "enough" threshold. It depends from person to person, basically, if you can do something and you get paid for that, then you do it. It's even easier to accept doing it if whatever you need to do is easy for you.

So in the case of an actor, "we'll pay you a ton of money to sell tobacco and gambling" can be very tempting because it's easy for them. Also it gives them more exposure and fame, and you may think they already have enough but no. If they don't take it someone else will and they will no longer be top N.1.

Sorry kid but people don't make money to increase their moral understanding. They make money to afford living a certain lifestyle. For most people, it's just covering basic needs. Maybe to help their families do the same. But for those who already have all that covered it's just to gain more, and you are right it's really sad they don't care how. They should care.

  • girls' night
  • I thought it would be body painting too but then wondered, what if the arms and torso are made of a thin printed lycra or something, with the dress sewn on top as part of the costume. The head would be a separate piece made of latex or something sturdier. The fishnets would be just regular fishnets.

The only piece that doesn't make any sense is the tail, they're too thick and go under the dress which looks very awkward as part of the costume.

  • It is, although for this one the street markings and zebra crossing going nowhere is a giveaway. If you look closely you'll also find their arms are a bit short compared to the legs. Finally, the dinosaur in color is a different model than all those in the b&w picture, which in itself isn't an ai indication but in the context of the joke it kinda raises questions.

Still funny though, I'd love to have one of these costumes

  • So... Your cat does my #2 when you do your #2? Def #2

  • Is my girlfriend gaslighting me? (Edit: No, she is not gaslighting me, but may have some other issues.)
  • yes you would be responsible!!!!1!1!! you'd be sent to jail with the same sentence as the kidnapper whether they catch it or not!!!

Of course not. I would brush this off thinking your GF is probably not even 20 years old yet. The situation sounds a bit immature. I would be concerned if she's older than 25 and making that scene though, it sounds like a very large red flag. Now, perhaps she's been through some trauma that would explain the behaviour, if that's the case you may want to consider professional help.

  • Why does my cat like to go into the bathroom and take my towel off the holder and then leave?
  • Three possible reasons:

1- They're into your smell and trying to rub themselves on something that smells like you,

2- they're trying to get your attention,

3- if the litter is also in the bathroom, they could be cleaning their paws on the towel. I've seen cats scratch everything in the room after using the litter.

From the way you phrased the question my money is on #2, but you know better. It might be time to get a higher towel bar or close the bathroom door

  • just found a flea on our cat, do we go full nuclear?
  • You have a ton of comments so I'll keep it short. Fleas are very, very, very extremely hard to get rid of once they reach critical mass. Their eggs can remain dormant for up to two years, and they're immune to pest control methods including bombs.

My suggestion: get a pill based flea treatment, read the dosage instructions and keep it going for at least 3 months. Clean and vacuum regularly. You don't need to buy a steam cleaner but other than that your girl is spot on.

  • French centrists must decide: support the left – or hand the keys of power to the far right?
  • I would love to hear what's going on from the perspective of centrist living in France right now (as opposed to what the media says).

  • what to send other than flowers to say thank you?
  • Again I don't know about your local rules or what's available but since you were considering flowers and decided against them because of the price, my suggestion would be a nice thank you card and maybe a small tiny cheap succulent plant. They are hardy, easy to keep even on a desk and they cost like a cup of coffee or so.

  • That erratic pulsating sensation on your legs after a brisk walk- what is it? And more questions

As the title says. I go for a 20 minute walk and when I stop moving, I'm not feeling tired or even agitated at all, yet my legs feel like they're pulsating in different areas, always near the skin. It's not synchronised with my heartbeat. It stops after a few minutes.

Chat GPT says these are just muscle twitches caused by dehydration or lack of electrolytes. I'm not convinced. Why does it feel almost on the skin and not deeper in the muscles? Why do I feel it after a 20 minute walk that doesn't make me sweat but I don't feel it after a 40 minute leg focused workout???? Wouldn't that be more strenuous on the legs?? Does this thing even have a name?

    Thanks

What mundane things of our era could be seen as beautiful or admirable in the future?

For example, buildings and houses more than a hundred years old keep getting more and more rare, and often have an aesthetic that stands out, more ornate or with a particular style that most people can't afford today or that is not financially convenient etc. But back in the day, that's how things were built and most people didn't put much thought into it.

Another example, illustrations for advertisements ( either billboards or magazines). Up until the 60s (declining from the 70s onwards) a lot of ads had hand drawn illustrations, which required a lot of skill and talent to make. Yet people took them for granted, it was the standard quality of illustration for ads.

So the question is, are we currently mass producing something that will be seen in a similar light in a couple of generations? Thoughts?

Will people show off their old computers and phones in say, 30 or 50 years in the future?

Every now and then I see a vintage car in the street, originally from the 40s or 60s, in spotless condition. Cars have been around for longer than computers.... But would such a thing be viable for electronics?

Wait, does it exist already and I never heard of it?

This... Really feels like a very stupid question. Sorry

Anyone had good results with hair growth products/methods?

I'm starting to notice my hair is thinning a bit. Nothing drastic. Just natural aging. No, nothing unusual came up when I got my blood tests, my doctor didn't find anything wrong with me.

I'm just asking to see if any of you had good luck with any products. I know grafting is an option, and I also know that there are hair clinics which are very expensive etc. but I'm after an "at home" method.

Is there a product you would recommend?

How is it possible that a laptop can read a CD flawlessly, but every other device I've tried the CD on skips at certain parts?

I've had this CD for ages. Decades. It would always skip at a certain parts on two of its tracks. I've never in my life heard the full CD because of this reason, always having to skip forward to the next track.

I've listened to it on at least four different devices, among them a very large Sony home stereo system. I've always thought the CD was faulty.

But today, I ripped the CD on a cheap old laptop and guess what. For the first time in my life I heard the whole uninterrupted tracks. What is this sorcery? Can someone explain?

Just before death you are granted one truthful, understandable answer to one question. What would you want to know?

Obviously a hypothetical scenario. There is no way to pass on the knowledge to anyone else. Time freezes for you only, and once you have your answer you are out of this world.

The question can allow you to see into the past, present and future and gain comprehension of any topic/issue. But it's only one question.

Edit: the point isn't "how to cheat death". You can't. Your body is frozen and there is nothing you can do with this knowledge other than knowing it, and die. So if you would rather be frozen in a limbo just thinking of numbers for eternity, be my guest.

Such a variety of replies, it's been really interesting to read them!

What would you want to know? Personally I'd want to see a timelapse or milestone glimpses of humanity's future until the end of Earth's existence (if we survive that long)

Horse people of Lemmy- how easily can someone steal a random horse? (several questions)

I'm not experienced with horses. I know many are trained to work for just about anyone. They were used in wars and police still use horses this day and age for crowd control, so I guess they can stomach a bit of violence and chaos. But most domestic animals behave differently with people they're familiar with vs random strangers, so I presume horses would follow suit?

My question is inspired by countless movie/videogame scenarios in which there are a bunch of random horses tied, and a character just picks any, hops on and rides away.

Or, there's a fight, horse owner gets killed and the thief rides away on the horse.

Regarding horse behaviour only, are these realistic scenarios?

How likely is that a horse would resist being mounted by a random?

Wouldn't they be scared or angry if their previous rider just got killed right there?

Is it possible for an experienced person to tell at a glance how obedient a horse is? (How?)

These are my sudden horse questions. TIA

Do you follow any youtubers that talk about film, tv, animation or vfx?

What does it look like for a YouTube creator when the audience uses something like NewPipe or Freetube?

I'm not too tech savvy so I appreciate responses in layman's terms.

I have a rough concept of how NewPipe works, (correct me if I'm wrong though!) basically it's a scrapper so it somehow reads the information in YouTube, anonymously, and filters the ads for you.

What I'm interested in knowing is, how does this behaviour look like from YouTube's perspective. Can the platform "tell" that someone is accessing their content but not the ads that should go before and inbetween the videos? Do these views requested by NewPipe count towards the global amount of views a video has? Do content creators still get money from youtube ads with NewPipe views? Do they also get to see engagement data from views (such as which parts are skipped)? Etc etc.

How do you *effectively* prevent plaque/tartar forming on your teeth?

My teeth are in good health and I take good care of them, yet I always get this plaque buildup no matter what I try.

I've tried different brushes, toothpastes, and flossing methods to no avail. Mouthwash is too harsh on my mouth and peels my skin off so I avoid that.

I haven't tried waterpicks or electric brushes yet. Did you? Did they work for you? Have you succeeded in preventing plaque and if so, how???

Vinegar as a cleaning agent is overrated

What the title says. Sure, it's gentle on the environment, but it doesn't remove soap scum, grease, grime etc anywhere nearly as effective as other products. I also doubt its efficiency as an antibacterial compared to say alcohol or most detergents.

    There, I've said it.

What can cause an automatic car to suddenly shake and stop?

It happened to my car last week, it got towed to a mechanic and I'm yet to hear back. I don't know a lot about cars, so I'm hoping I'll learn something here and be able to tell if the mechanic tries to rip me off.

The car is a small hatchback automatic Hyundai Getz, 2009, serviced regularly. I've had it for 6 years with no major issues until about a year or so.

Five days ago I was driving through the city for at least 40 minutes when suddenly, while waiting at the lights, the car shook and for a moment I thought it would stall. I stopped on a side street, waited 20 minutes and resumed my journey.

About an hour later I'm on the motorway and it shakes again. I stop on the shoulder, wait, but it's not a safe area. I start again, only now I have the check engine light on my dashboard blinking. I manage to take an exit and my car stops on its own, the oil and battery lights now visible too. Fortunately there is no traffic here so I wait a minute, start again and park it on the shoulder.

Roadside assistance arrives, the mechanic looks at it and finds nothing wrong with it other than a fuel sensor which is an issue I've had for several years now. We get it towed to a mechanic but they were closing shop by the time I arrived. Before closing the shop mechanic says that at a glance he doesn't see anything, but notes the oil looks very clean.

I've never had the car shake like this. The last time it failed me was early this year, when it overheated during a very hot day, but it didn't shake. I've had the thermostat repaired since as well as a minor coolant leak.

Congrats, you've read this far. Thoughts?

A good fantasy book? you know, wizards, dragons, princesses, that kind of stuff

Well I'm craving something in this genre but I'm a bit overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. So many titles and yet I'm not sure what to read. Maybe you can help?

I'm looking for something in a high fantasy setting. I'm not too keen on heavy politics and war driven plots (though, I can read that ). What really gets me is interesting characters, good action and magical creatures.

I've loved anything Discworld and I've also enjoyed the First Law books by Abercrombie.

I'm finding that Tolkien, Sanderson and George RR Martin appear on every fantasy list I come across, so if you do recommend something I'd appreciate it be something other than that.

can someone explain skibidi toilet please?

I keep seeing it on my random feed suggestions and this is using NewPipe, so it has nothing to do with my actual YouTube activity (I think. Nothing there is stuff I'm interested in, with very few exceptions). So I've ignored it first, then I watched like two and was super confused. Wtf. These videos have millions of views and I don't even understand the name or what's the appeal.

    Fiction audiobooks you've enjoyed?

I'm looking for easy-to-listen-to fiction audiobooks. Something I can tune in while doing other stuff without getting distracted.

I find some authors have styles that are a bit more sophisticated than others. The more thought-provoking, the more difficult I find to enjoy an audiobook while doing something else. I catch myself stopping whatever I'm doing to pay attention to the book, which is not what I want.

So for example I've found The Witcher books very easy to listen to, it wouldn't matter if I missed a few seconds and I never found myself stopping to ponder about the text itself. The narrator was great too. Also bonus points as it was a long saga of books.

In contrast I would never want to listen to a Terry Pratchett book while doing something else. He's probably my favourite English author but I find he's too much of a genius, and my poor brain wouldn't be able to digest it all if I'm not giving it my attention 100%.

    I hope this makes sense?

    How's your experience with audiobooks?

Is there a Lemmy app that shows you to which communities another user is subscribed?

As the title says. I thought that was brilliant on Reddit, just checking people's profiles would lead to some cool discoveries of communities I would have never thought of by myself.

    Is this a feature somewhere?

Edit: of course users have the option to not show these, no I don't want to violate anyone's privacy

Port Forwarding - Should I? and which VPN?

Ahoy! I know this has been asked a lot already, I've been following up and doing some research online but I'm still confused. Sorry.

1-I'm not exactly tech savvy. (Ok. I'm thick as a brick) 2-I'm a very casual BitTorrent user. I'll go months without torrenting.

    3-I do stream more frequently.

4-I travel often, meaning I don't often have admin access to the networks I connect to

I currently have Nord. I heard it's no longer as trusted as it used to, and since my subscription is ending I'm wondering if I should jump ship.

I read I should be using Port Forwarding, and I get the concept of it somewhat but I'm still not sure if I need it (considering my casual torrent use, so far... I've been ok?), and also, I have no idea how to set that up. (would #4 be a problem?).

Now, VPN: Mullvad, AirVPN, and Proton seem to be the most reliable ones. Is that right?

Air has good pricing atm, and port forwarding. I heard it's not too user friendly though? (#1)

Mullvad seems to have a solid rep. but no port forwarding (It used to? Their website doesn't say much unless I create an account?)

Proton: has PF, seems good too

Or should I just stick with Nord?

TLDR which VPN should I go for considering 1,2,3,4, and should I consider port forwarding in my decision?

    Thanks
