Which was better in 1996: Nights into Dreams or Super Mario 64?
  • People have different tastes so to some people Nights is a better game.

I don’t want Mario and I don’t want 3D platformers. I don’t think Nights is a great game but I’ll give it 5 minutes at least.

  • These guys were great 12 years ago. Taven with Truth Martini was one of the funnest things about ROH.

I’ve always thought Bennett was a bit throwaway, but still fun.

    I don’t think they’re offering much in 2024.

  • Google sends emails that 100% look like phishing
  • But there are so many dodgy similar looking ones that auto complete if you’re typing it.

I went to type in the aka.ms to find a bit locker recovery key. And didn’t realise it autocorrected to something like akam.ms and it was a super sketchy site about bit locker recovery. Luckily I realised straight away even MS wouldn’t host a website like the one I saw.

  • what's your favorite thing to put on fries that isn't ketchup?
  • I can’t speak for the UK but I believe the situation would probably be same as Australia. That is, there are a bunch of different ways to cut chips.

The thicker chips you mentioned are called steak cut chips.

The fries (thin, McDonald style) are called shoestring fries.

Long, not thin but not thick (best reference I have here KFC style, but don’t know if they’re the same in North America), would be known as straight cut chips.

  • I travel into Melbourne for work. About an hour and a half drive.

I used to come in via Sunbury Rd near the airport but that route has shit itself getting in or out since roadwork is increasing. So I’ve started using the Calder and Ring Road near Keilor.

I thought the Sunbury Rd area was dangerous. Jesus Christ, if you decide to ever drive on the Ring Road you’re really just hoping you don’t die. Just the short stretch to get back on the freeway out of Melbourne is basically a suicide run.

Has it always been like this?

  • What have you played this week?
  • I played Fallout 2 again last year whilst I was on a few weeks break from work. I was hoping to capture the magic of the summer of 98/99 when I spent my entire school holiday playing it.

We’ll that doesn’t really work when a toddler and pregnant partner need you all the time... but still super fun and it was to nice revisit and bring back those memories.

  • Would you wear a body cam at work?
  • Where I work; the public facing staff, security and customer service roles, are now offered to wear one at the start of their shift. They all want to use one.

These workers face abuse - physical assault, threats, harassment - from members of the public.

What has been found is that when they turn the body worn camera on, the other person tends to stop the abuse or at least de-escalates somewhat. (Prior to having body worn cameras available, some of these staff had tried to use their phone to film when in an incident, but it almost always triggered an immediate violent response - one staff had their phone taken and smashed, another was hit in the face)

There has been a decrease in mental health injury claims since using these. My own talks with these staff are that they feel safer, and had asked their employer to procure more body worn cameras as there wasn’t enough for all the staff.

The staff are not required to have them constantly on, they press a button to switch it on when an aggressive situation is forming or they believe they are in danger.

What have you been playing lately? (August)
  • Dink Smallwood and various dmods.

Sonic 3 AIR, and the Sonic 8bit Remakes because my daughter can’t get enough Sonic.

I just this afternoon rolled up a new character in Stardew Valley.

  • Doll house Christmas present (bit late posting!)

I’m not active enough of an internet guy to remember to actually post stuff - so we’re going back 6 months…

I surprised my daughter (and the entire family) on Christmas morning when they found this waiting in the living room. I hadn’t told my partner I’d been working on anything, kept it quiet.

It’s all just pine, dressed all round. Had to go buy a cheap and nasty jigsaw to cut the doors and opening between floors since my coping saw broke whilst trying to work this (handle snapped clean off, thanks Stanley)

The roof- cut at an angle, turned one piece over and glued it. Then stood like a statue holding it for half an hour pressing it against the ground until it dried enough. Couldn’t think of any other way to hold it tight at that angle -_-

The floors and balcony are all slotted into through dados. Cut, chiseled and then cleaned up a bit with trim router. And I hate so much working pine with chisels! (I’ve since got a bigger router bit that would have made this much easier)

Finished with water based Jarrah stain, with water based acrylic paint on the roof and “bathroom”. Some of that finish is really sloppy, I was still out there late on Christmas Eve trying to get the last few coats on.

A leftover sheet of mdf (think about 5mm) just painted and nailed in as the back wall.

There’s a little set of stairs on the ground floor finished with dark carnauba wax. There’s also a little rope ladder going up to the top floor - was from our pet bird who had left us recently.

A whole mish mash of different ideas here, but I just wanted to make something fun and interesting for my daughter.

For what I wanted to do for her first big Christmas (just turned 3), this turned out better than I thought I could do.

    New bed for my daughter

Finally completed a bed for my 3 year old daughter. This was my first project in 20 years, so it’s taken me about 9 months of relearning techniques, practicing, finding the right tools, and just finding time really.

Originally was just M&T and half lap joins, but when setting up I decided it was a little too wiggly so I put 38mm and 17mm angle brackets to reinforce it.

Mostly construction lumber from local hardware shop. A few pieces “feature pieces”, Blackbutt and Macrocarpa. Finished with walrus furniture oil. The slats were cut down from someone selling off pieces of their bed on marketplace. (?)

    ! ! ! ! !
