In vim I can't type the ~ character
Edit 4: I think I've fixed the issue. I uninstalled vim, deleted ~/.viminfo
and /etc/vimrc
, then reinstalled vim. I jumped around a file a bit, went in and out of edit mode, and type a bunch of ~
and it didn't jump the text around at all. Still not sure what I did, but it appears this variation of turning it on and off again worked.
I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
I was holding my laptop while I had a vile open in vim, and I slipped, mashing a bunch of keys on the keyboard by mistake.
After doing this, I can't type the ~
character anymore. Anytime I try to type it, it jumps the text to the last line, putting the last line at the top of the editing screen so that's the only line of text showing.
I thought maybe I had set an option that would show up in ~/.vimrc
, but there's no ~/.vimrc
file. There is a /etc/vimrc
file, and a ~/.viminfo
file.
I've searched and had no luck finding out what I did to cause this behavior. I also tried looking through the vim ma
Sed and regex string manipulation
Hi everyone !
I'm in need for some assistance for string manipulation with sed and regex. I tried a whole day to trial & error and look around the web to find a solution however it's way over my capabilities and maybe here are some sed/regex gurus who are willing to give me a helping hand !
With everything I gathered around the web, It seems it's rather a complicated regex and sed substitution, here we go !
What Am I trying to achieve?
I have a lot of markdown guides I want to host on a self-hosted forgejo based git markdown. However the classic markdown links are not the same as one github/forgejo...
Convert the following string:
undefined
[Some text](#Header%20Linking%20MARKDOWN.md)
Into
undefined
[Some text](#header-linking-markdown.md)
As you can see those are the following requirement:
- Pattern:
[Some text](#link%20to%20header.md)
- Only edit what's between parentheses
- Replace
space (%20)
with-
- Everything as lowercase
- Links are sometimes in nested parentheses
Do I cook Daal with a lid on?
I received the Dishoom cookbook for Christmas, I'm trying the Daal first :/. They don't say if I should cover the Daal while cooking. It seems like it would be far too watery with a lid on. They even talk of adding water if it gets low.
Follow-up edit: mistakes were made but ok for a first try. I left it off and simmering for 1.5hrs but it was still pretty watery. I should have started with less water. Then I forgot the cream until after the first bowl... Oops. Thanks for all the tips!
pfBlockerNG requires log for ASN lookup? What about privacy
I recently update pfBlockerNG on my pfsense box and after login in several days after I have loads of messages saying: "pfBlockerNG ASN - To utilize the ASN functionality, you must register for a free IPinfo Account. Review IP Tab for more information." Once I register are they going to start collecting data every time pfSense querries their ASN database?
No hot water coming out on 1 faucet only
First time homeowner here so please forgive the newbie question. I'm in Texas so our houses aren't built for the cold. We're going through freezing temps at night right now, with temps getting up well above freezing during the day. I woke up this morning to my kitchen faucet not having water (at all) when turning it to the hot setting. It's the type of faucet that you just turn left (hot) and right (cold) and lift to open. The cold water side is fine. The two other faucets found in the two bathrooms have hot water without issues, but they have separate faucets for hot and cold. I've been religiously dripping all our faucets every night since last week. Is it possible something froze? And what I can do to start figuring out the problem and possibly fix myself?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Here's what it looks like under the sink. The upper left tube is what I believe is the hot water, the right for cold, and the bottom goes to the dishwasher.

Regarding a VPS host - Is Ionos good?
I've been looking to get myself a VPS. It's my first time, too.
A friend of mine recommended Hetzner to me, so I signed up for them, twice, but was rejected due to "some concerns with the information".
So I'm looking for alternatives now. I stumbled upon Ionos but I saw a ton of negative Reddit posts, which is giving me doubt.
Update 1: I found https://lemmy.ml/post/19647638 - some positive feedback about Ionos, but the more opinions the better
Update 2: I proceeded with purchasing one anyway, and the experience has been smooth so far, so that's nice. But it's only been a couple hours since purchase so we'll wait and see.
Should we create a mega thread for show recommendations?
I don't want to stop interest in UK TV, however I have seen a few questions about UK TV recommendations (maybe not all in this sub).
I remember seeing this happen a lot in the UK TV subs on Reddit which always ended up being the same 20 shows giving a low signal to noise, so I was wondering whether we could preempt it by making a mega thread to point people to to improve the quality of recommendations. Perhaps have some rules, such as only a single show per comment so people can vote on what they did or didn't enjoy and end up with a ranked list?
Other thoughts I had were a mega thread per type of show, so popular sitcoms or police procedurals don't drown out interesting dramas, and therefore an index pinned to point people to?
[Edit] Maybe each comment should contain the location where it can be watched? Might be hard as region restrictions mean that folks outside the UK wouldn't add iPlayer URLs.
Refrigerator Power Consumption / Plugging into UPS
My power is generally pretty reliable, but when it does have issues, it often flickers violently. More than once, I thought the control board in my fridge got fried, but was luckily able to do the refrigerator equivalent to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and reset it.
I have an extra 800W UPS laying around, so I figured I'd give it a try and see if it would run it. I'm not really looking to use the UPS to keep it powered during an outage, just to deal with the power flickers/surges/brownouts that may damage it (surge protectors won't protect against brownouts). Any additional cooling time during an outage would simply be a bonus.
To my surprise, it works. Not only works, but only seems to draw between 110 and 160 watts (compressor on, door open). However, I expected it to draw power in the 700-900 watt range. Granted, the last time I worried about refrigerator wattage was years ago when I lived in the boonies, had an older fridge, and had to resource-manage when I was running from the gene
Deep dish pizza recipes?
Does anyone have any good deep dish pizza recipes? Specifically for the crust? The craving has struck again for a Chicago deep dish and as there is no deep dish to be found in the land of flat crusts, I am in need of recipe suggestions.
What can replace onions and garlic?
I love cooking, and most dishes I cook contain some kind of onions or garlic in varying amounts. Unfortunately, my partner doesn't handle them well, so I want to replace them as much as I can.
Leek is one decent alternative to onions, and I've recently discovered Asafoetida, a spice that creates an oniony flavor. But onions are also important for texture, especially in saucy dishes, and both leek and spices replace that poorly. Fennel works sometimes but alters the taste.
Garlic generally seems hard to replace, although I've had some success with only slightly squashing the cloves and fishing them out before serving.
Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions. Anybody know any good alternatives, any cool tips or tricks I could try?
Edit: To clarify, the issue is that my partner can't digest them properly and they cause pain (likely a mild food allergy). The flavor is not an issue, and we both enjoy the stuff that we cook apart from this issue.
Ideas for sour cabbage?
Hey all,
I've recently been working on purchasing more stuff made and grown here in Canada, and have been making changes to my diet to account for that. One product that has me curious that I've never had before is "sour cabbage", which can be bought in the produce section and is apparently grown the province over.
While I haven't bought it, I was wondering what some ideas are that I can make with it. Thanks in advance!
your favourite yummly alternatives?
hi, all; hope this is appropriate.
i was saddened to find out that yummly was killed off over the weekend even though it was one of my favourite places to find new recipes.
does anyone have any good replacements? especially which make it easy to search by cuisine or dietary type?
What's the strangest bug you encountered that resolved magically by itself?

For better visibility I cross-post my question in this community.
Heyha ! I just came across a very odd issue/bug that somehow resolved by itself without knowing who or what was the culprit.
For context, YouTube doing his thing making nearly all public instances obsolete, I'm self-hosting a Piped instance in my homelab via Docker.
Everything is going smoothly, self-signed certs, traefik, accessible via Wireguard outside of my network, and and and !! LibreTube connects without any issues to my Piped instance on my Android phone and so does RiMusic.
However, in RiMusic when I was trying to access my synced Piped playlists, RiMusic went crazy and my playlist seemed to be in a query loop were I was unable to play any songs and was flickering alot.

- Reboot the piped instance => Same behavior

Lemmy Communities and Threads Collection: Linux Audio & (FOSS) Music Production on Linux
Hi!
I hope it's allright to post this here as it's not just about Linux Audio, so please let me know if I should move this elsewhere.
Well, I guess we are all in the same boat when it comes to trying to grow communities here on Lemmy so we can provide information on certain topics here as well (and making the platform more attractive for others in the long run).
There are a bunch of Questions concerning Linux Audio / Music Production scattered across many communities and instances - which is great for decentralisation reasons, but also makes everything a bit difficult to find. So, I thought I'd collect some threads and communities that might be interesting for a start to help others figuring things out in the future.
When I joined Lemmy, I struggled a lot with search on here, and as I looked for anything concerning t
