What video games are you playing? What have you finished recently? What do you plan to play? - Video Game General Discussion Thread #29

Pinging those that were here before.

Discussion questions:

What video games have you played recently?

and

What are your favorite video game genres?

Question of the week:

What games of 2025 are you enjoying right now, if any?

and

What do you think of the recent Nintendo Direct? And the upcoming one on April 2nd? And, once the Direct airs, what did you think of it? (Last question is for when it airs in the future.)

  • Haven't played anything for the last week+ because I recently moved out. Fuck my previous pos landlord.

I think the Direct was pretty good game-wise, but fuck Nintendo too. Every single game upgrade is paid and they are raising the price of first-party games. Their games here in Brasil is already too expensive, this is gonna become interely inviable here. I can only hope people find ways to jailbrake it as soon as possible after it launches.

  • Just finished playing Shadowrun Hong Kong, can definitely recommend if you enjoy RPGs with tactical combat. Started playing Killer Frequency. It's a pretty clever concept, and only around 5-9 hours to finish. Can also recommend Turbo Overkill, which I finished recently. A truly amazing boomer shooter.

I tend to enjoy games that are story focused, and not too grindy.

Haven't really kept up with Nintendo. Haven't touched my Switch since I got the Steam Deck.

    • yeah, the Switch and likely the Switch 2 will still be outclassed by the Steam Deck.

I feel the same way, though I still keep up with Nintendo, especially since they have their own exclusives.

    • I too enjoy Turbo Overkill a lot but I'm only maybe halfway through. :/ I stopped playing because for some reason I started getting this weird sound bug where all audio cuts out for 5 - 10 seconds and then comes back and is fine for like a minute until it cuts out again. I've tried everything. No matter what I do it just keeps happening and it only tends to happen on the Windows version of Unity games in general I've noticed. I've combed the web for answers but only found a couple people with a similar problem with no answers, or answers that don't work for me.

If only they released a Linux native version. Linux native Unity games are completely fine.

  • I've been bouncing between games a lot the last few months trying to find something to hyperfocus on.

I tried Going Medieval for a bit. Its a medieval rimworld clone in 3d. Its ok but too easy and needs a lot of fleshing out.

I played some Delta V Rings of Saturn. Its a 2d top down asteroid mining game. Sounds kinda lame but its pretty good. The physics are done really well. (No friction 100% preservation of inertia) On the one hand it is really calm and peaceful and low stress... until you are trying to catch a beacon that is spinning and every time you fail to get it through your cargo bay doors you add more velocity to it and then the next thing you know you are screaming through the asteroid belt dodging giant hunks of ice where its just a matter of time before you crash.
\ The story is pretty thin to non existent so I got bored. Its one of those games where the grind is the game and the loop does end up getting a bit dull.

I tried Jusant. Its a rock climbing sim that tries to do thing where the lore is imbedded in notes between people. Its not bad. It makes you control each arm as you climb. Kinda like how death stranding had you control your leaning so you don't fall over.

Played a bit of Star wars Episode 1 Racer which I hadn't played in like 20 years. Fucking wato had me cracking up. "outlanders, they come here, how do they find me, they come here, they mess up my store"

Also played a bit of Darkforces remaster.

Played a bit of the latest Medieval Dynasty update. The towns have been fleshed out so they look more lived in. The new bandit camps are good, The new weapons and armor are pretty cool, I think there might have been some positive changes to the AI because the animals and bandits seem a bit more tricksy. I imagine these upgraded bandits will be really rough in the early game.

And then the last few days I have been playing X4. X2 was pretty good X3 pissed me off with the tiny UI so I never got into it. X4 seems pretty good but we will see.

    • Star Wars Episode 1 Racer is a game my childhood self loved and I would vouch for anyone playing that game. It really is great.

  • I haven’t played any games recently due to school, but once I am off/during Spring term I hope to get back into playing Fields of Mistria and other games I got on my steam deck like Dead Rising. I am also looking forward to playing REPO. I do not know how to determine my favourite genres because I am fairly eclectic.

I liked the most recent direct but I will say that most of the games did not interest me, which makes sense, so I am looking forward to the next one. I am excited for Pokemon legends ZA, Witchbrook, Story of Seasons, and Tomodachi life 2. Tomodachi life was a big part of my childhood and I am looking forward to playing it again with better graphics and hopefully gay marriage, I really hated having to make one of the miis the opposite gender just so they could get together.

    • Oh, I've heard of REPO but the analog horror aspect might be offputting to me.

      • I do not know much about analog horror. It seems similar to Lethal Company but even more comedic due to the cartoony graphics and eye programming. I just think it’ll be nice to play with friends, especially on mic.

  • Super hyped for the new raids in FFXIV. I really want to go in as Black Mage but I'm not sure if I'll be doing well enough to prog with it.

I've also been playing Octopath Traveler on the side. The burst system makes the turn based combat far more engaging to me for some reason.

I'm not playing any 2025 games, in fact the only game I even know that released this year is the new Assassin's Creed, and I quit that series a long time ago.

I don't care for nintendo games, so all I know it's that there has been a new metroid announced.

I'm really looking forward to Rhythm heaven groove! It's the only game that caught my attention and I'm glad that the series got another entry after the last one on 3ds a lifetime ago.

  • For the record:

I'm still playing Dynasty Warriors Origins, but will probably move on to focusing on Silent Hill 2 Remake soon.

I plan to play Rise of the Ronin next.
