Around 30 years ago, I found a CD series called “Jazz ‘Round Midnight”. Each album featured a different jazz artist with songs they played that were apropos to the series title.
This one by Bill Evans I listened to every night when going to sleep for literally 10 years and never grew tired of it. I can’t say that about any other album or individual song.
That sounds amazing! I love hearing stories like that where music becomes a part of your routine. I haven’t come across the "Jazz ‘Round Midnight" series, but now I’m definitely intrigued. Bill Evans has such a timeless style, and it’s awesome that you could enjoy it every night for so long without growing tired of it. I’ve been exploring different albums on Spotify lately, and I might just have to add this one to my playlist! Thanks for sharing that, it’s got me excited to dive deeper into jazz again.
I remember finding this CD (and a few others from the collection) amongst my dad's music collection, right as MP3s were becoming a thing in the mid 90s.
I ripped them and they made their way onto my computer / Winamp playlists, followed me to college, and were on every generation of iPod that I used. With the switch to streaming services, I tried to bring along as much of my collection as possible, but some things just got lost.
The whole collection is incredibly curated for a very precise late-night vibe. The Billy Holliday one is great too - remember that one.
Like you, I have unfortunately lost the physical CDs over time which I also used to rip to my pc and copy to other places as well.
However, I did stumble across an app called Spotiflyer which I use to download songs/albums from Spotify (and other services) for free and then listen to them offline. It's great to have locally stored media vs. having to be chained to online services.
That being said, I haven't listened to that Billy Holiday album, but you've got my interest piqued and I'll definitely check it out.
Nice! I do often miss the days of my 120 GB iPod classic with an album collection that I had carefully curated over the course of decades. There is a lot that is convenient about the streaming era, for sure, but I feel like that set of hundreds of albums that I listened to over and over again was a really unique and personal set of music, and having a bunch of favorites on Spotify just isn't the same...
