  • I find that they're great for headings, titles, dates, etc - a little emphasis in my notes. With that said, my pilot metropolitan's stub nib has also always been really scratchy too, and hard starts a lot. It's always been one of my most disappointing pens.

One of my favorite stub nibs is a Jinhao 80 (Lamy 2000 clone, usually sub-$10). I swapped out the Jinhao nib for a Lamy 1.1 stub, and it writes like a dream!

  • Favorite autumn inks?
  • Nice - I had misread this as Diamine Earl Grey at first, and was very confused ("I've used this before and don't remember any orange tones!"). But it does look beautiful!

Saddle Brown also looks very nice and versatile. Do you think that you need a medium nib to get the full spectrum of shading? I've sometimes been disappointed with browns that are too light with an F nib (bought a sample of Robert Oster Caffe Crema, but it really was too light for my daily use unless in an M, B, or stub).

  • The SuperKitties soundtrack has absolutely no right to go as hard as it does.

The show is inane, but the music slaps.

First of all, Carmen Carter absolutely kills the vocals on SuperKitties Theme and SuperKitty Call, both hard driving 70s-ish action theme vibes. Take the xylophone solos on SuperKitty Call and inject them into my veins. My Bath, My Bubbles and Me is a goddam bop. Always In My Heart is a tearjerker that would fit in just fine on your favorite boy band album. And even the rough ones (like Cheese) are only 60 seconds long, so they're over before they can get too annoying.

Am I right, or am I just going insane because this is LITERALLY THE ONLY MUSIC I'VE BEEN ALLOWED TO LISTEN TO FOR THE LAST MONTH?

    Favorite autumn inks?

As we round the corner into autumn in the northern hemisphere, the air is a little crisper, the days are shorter, and the leaves are changing... and looking for some new inks to try out. Do you have favorite inks for the season?

  • Do you have Quick Tap enabled? I have mine set up to show notifications (I miss the old ability to swipe down on the rear fingerprint reader), but yours might be set up to play/pause media.

  • Fountain pen-friendly printer paper?
  • Follow-up - I bought this and it works great! And yes - it is really thick. I think the reams of the usual printer paper at the office are going to develop an inferiority complex. Thanks again for the recommendations!

  • What paper is everyone else using?
  • Mostly Leuchtturm, mainly because I really like their notebooks and the variety of them that are available. The paper is fine, but not like tomoe or anything like that. I mostly write at work during meetings etc., so the notebook is equally important to me. Open to other suggestions though!

  • Bill Evans - My Foolish Heart - Jazz Synergy
  • Great tune, and my favorite jazz musician of all time, bar none. Also, the quality of this video is outstanding. I'm not sure I've seen any Bill Evans trio video recordings from this era that are that clear. Thanks for posting!

  • My most listened to album
  • Nice! I do often miss the days of my 120 GB iPod classic with an album collection that I had carefully curated over the course of decades. There is a lot that is convenient about the streaming era, for sure, but I feel like that set of hundreds of albums that I listened to over and over again was a really unique and personal set of music, and having a bunch of favorites on Spotify just isn't the same...

  • My most listened to album
  • Thanks for this! This is a blast from the past.

I remember finding this CD (and a few others from the collection) amongst my dad's music collection, right as MP3s were becoming a thing in the mid 90s.

I ripped them and they made their way onto my computer / Winamp playlists, followed me to college, and were on every generation of iPod that I used. With the switch to streaming services, I tried to bring along as much of my collection as possible, but some things just got lost.

The whole collection is incredibly curated for a very precise late-night vibe. The Billy Holliday one is great too - remember that one.

  • Did anyone try to return to reddit and notice it just didn't do it for you anymore?
  • There is !reddead@lemmy.world, but it's pretty quiet. You could try posting there to get some of that content going. It's a bit of a vicious cycle, though - the lack of content drives people away, leading to less content.

I will say that even in smaller communities I find that people are quite helpful here with questions, which is great.

It does seem like the post reddit boom of interaction and growth has waned, thought, and many of the communities that were starting to grow are now much quieter than they were a few weeks ago. I think that the lemmy.world downtime for so long really drove people away, which is a shame.

  • Another newbie question: handling reimbursements
  • Hmm interesting - might give this a try. I also will eventually need to figure out how to do this for work trips, medical stuff getting reimbursed out of an HSA, etc, so I will probably need to set a relatively high amount in this category. I guess that that makes sense, though, since I'm in essence extending a line of credit to all of these people.

So, in your system, do you feel like you get a good view of your spending in these categories? Or is everything just sucked up into the pluses and minuses of the reimbursement category (which may not be a big deal)?

  • Another newbie question: handling reimbursements
  • Hmm, yeah - thanks! The first option is what I'd considered, but I wanted to make sure that we were able to see the actual net amount we are paying for our own phones, like you mentioned.

The second idea seems like maybe an ok way to go. Some of the family likes to pay a few months at once (ahead of time) so we would likely always have a buffer. I don't like the risk of being on the hook without budgeted money if someone falls behind, though...

I did reach out to YNAB support. I guess I just don't understand why- as you said- the needed for spending doesn't take the inflows in that category into account. If I wait till the end of the month, I guess that will roll over?

  • Another newbie question: handling reimbursements

Hi all, Another newbie question here. I manage our family's cellphone plan, which is $199.90/month for 5 lines (two in our household, 3 from other family members). The other family members reimburse me using Venmo each month.

So, I set up a category with the target amount of $199.90, due on the date that our cell phone bill is due, as per YNAB's recommendations. At the beginning of the month, I assigned $199.90 to that category. Then, when our family members' venmo payments came in, I categorized those as inflows to the cell phone account. Now, waiting for the bill, I see:

    • $199.90 in "assigned"
    • +$120 in "activity"
    • $319.90 in "available"

    !

    !

All of this makes sense to me. But, it seems like now I should be able to re-assign $120 to another category. If I try that, though, it suddenly shows the category as underfunded, despite the fact that I still have $199.90 available.

    !

    !

Am I misunderstanding how assigned / activity / available work? Why, after $120 of inflow, is YNAB still requiring me to keep $199.90 assigned?

  • Vlatko Andonovski resigns after World Cup exit
www.espn.com Sources: Andonovski resigns as USWNT coach

Vlatko Andonovski has stepped down as manager of the U.S. women's national team following its World Cup exit, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

Sources: Andonovski resigns as USWNT coach

Not a big surprise, but now it's time to reset and get a new coach to guide the transition to the next generation.

Obviously the issues are deeper than one person, and a more thorough post-mortem is due. Still, in all, a bronze in Tokyo and a round of 16 exit in the World Cup is not a great legacy for a USWNT coach.

(New to YNAB) - what does your day to day workflow look like?

Hi all - new to YNAB - our family just got things set up. I think that we have a good grasp of the basic mechanics (we both work in jobs that interact with budgets, and just haven't applied this to our own finances rigorously before!)

But I'm wondering how you integrate YNAB into your life - what does your workflow look like? In other words: what do you do each day? With each paycheck? At the beginning of the month? How often do you sit down and review the big picture and set new goals, etc?

It would be great to hear about your rhythm and cadence for making this part of your routine, for those of us who are figuring it out for the first time!

    Fountain pen-friendly printer paper?

I occasionally have to read & critique manuscripts for work and I find it much easier to do with a printed page. But the computer paper that we have in the office is not ideal for fountain pens - tons of bleeding and feathering.

Does anybody have experience with computer printer paper that is relatively FP friendly?

I thought I might keep a ream or two at my desk and swap out some sheets when I'm about to print something that I'll be writing on. (Something relatively budget friendly would be great too... Not planning on putting Tomoe River through the office printer!)

[SaH] Upcoming offseason will be most significant in Sounders history
www.sounderatheart.com Upcoming offseason will be most significant in Sounders history

Almost regardless of how this season ends, there is likely to be a lot of change at the top of the roster.

Upcoming offseason will be most significant in Sounders history

    TD;DR (Oshan's predictions)

    • Lodeiro probably leaves
    • Rusnak probably gets renegotiated to a max-TAM level player
    • Ruidíaz may get bought out or traded; he wants an extension but that would be hard to imagine
    • JP probably back
    • Heber probably gone unless he scores a boatload of goals in the rest of the season
    • Xavi probably leaves, either by having his option declined or by having it picked up and Sounders trading him
    • Hopefully Frei stays on a team friendly contract with a small pay cut
    • Cleveland may be headed elsewhere to let the other keepers in the pipeline get more time at lower cost
    • Rowe and Fredy probably won't be back
    • Sounders will probably listen to offers for Vargas, RBW, and Leyva.
    • AB is probably gone given his age and so he can get playing time elsewhere, to free up minutes for some of the Defiance CBs
    • CR7 will have a bounce back year after the injuries; JMo will be back to his excellent form, Atencio needs more minutes, and Chu will be in the last year of his contract and out to prove that he deserves a big new contract.
    • biggest off-season priorities: new DP 10, new number 9 (maybe somebody younger to develop while Jordan starts up top for now)

    What are your thoughts?

Sounder At Heart leaving SB Nation / Vox and becoming independent
www.sounderatheart.com Sounder at Heart will become a reader-supported website on Aug. 21

Much of what we’ll be doing will remain the same, but we will need your support to make this sustainable as an independent venture.

Sounder at Heart will become a reader-supported website on Aug. 21

Details in the link - almost all the content will continue to be free and in front of a paywall, but they're asking for people to subscribe to make this a sustainable long-term venture.

There are different subscription tiers, which get you access to some additional merch, tickets to live events, etc. If you want to go beyond the free tier, access to all content, newsletters, etc. will be $2/mo or $19/year. They're hoping that most people will support at their $74/year level, if in their budget.

I immediately signed up for the $74/year tier. (Disclaimer: I have no relationship at all to SaH and am just a fan). I think that we are extraordinarily lucky to have this resource, as there's almost nothing like this for any other MLS team or most sports teams in general. The depth of the journalism, the insight of the commentary, and the quality of the writing are outstanding and have contributed in a major way to my love for the Sounders over the last decade.

    Halt and Catch Fire (2014-2017)

Inspired by seeing Lee Pace in the Pushing Daisies post.

I feel like this show got overlooked amongst many of AMC's big hits around this time - Walking Dead, Mad Men, Breaking Bad. But Halt and Catch Fire deserves to be right up there with the best of them.

The storytelling is rich and compelling, the writing is great, the characters are nuanced and dynamic, and the actors are phenomenal. The show manages to capture different eras for the same characters flawlessly with each season - the sense of time and place is so well developed, and there is strong conceptual continuity throughout the show despite each season having a very different arc, look, and sometimes tone. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out!

[Meta] 100 subscribers! (And notes on lemmy.world downtime)

Hi everyone! We have hit the entirely arbitrary threshold of 100 subscribers*, so I figured a post was in order!

First, thanks to all of you for joining in on this experiment. I expect that we may see some more users as some of the Reddit-->Lemmy apps like Sync and Boost come on line too, and bring some users with them. I appreciate the posts and engagement from many of you. We've had a few good match threads, even if the matches have been... less than stellar. Give it a try and join us!

Second, please feel free to post! Many of us (me included) are habitual lurkers, especially on big forums like Reddit. Here, though, we want to hear your voices and perspective. This feels to me more like the old days of the internet, with BBS and forums driving real discussion instead of algorithm-driven clickbait. But it's only as good as the discussions themselves, and for discussion we need your thoughts and opinions. Consider commenting and posting, whenever something comes up.

Third, thanks to our nacent mod team, including PloKoop@lemmy.world and CombatWombatEsq@lemmy.world. There hasn't been much need to moderate so far, but please feel free to reach out to us with ideas or if any concerns come up.

Last, we probably all recognize that the stability of lemmy.world has been challenging as of late, due to the alpha stage of Lemmy and a series of DDOS/ other attacks. Being on the current-biggest Lemmy instance means that these downtimes may happen for now, as it seems to be a target for script kiddies. Most recently, this happened during the leagues cup game, disrupting our match thread. (Though it may have saved us from a pretty depressing discussion...) I know it's less than optimal, but hopefully it's just temporary and stability will improve over time. This thing called Lemmy is still young, after all.

Anyway, thanks again - and let's get posting!

Anybody have any idea what this stuff inside the cap of my pen is?

I was riding with a Wing Sung 3009 today (a pretty nice, super cheap piston filler BTW) when I noticed this gunk on the inside of the cap. I'm pretty sure that I filled the pen up with Noodler's Air Corps Blue/Black a few months ago and then let the pen sit. It wrote pretty much right away.

But I noticed this brownish / tan / black residue on the inside of a cap, at the very bottom. I'm not sure if it was there before and I just didn't notice, or if it is new. It almost looks like burned plastic? Or maybe it's mold? But it seems like a weird place for mold to develop since there's no ink there. Has anybody seen anything like this before? I'm probably going to throw the pen away anyway (it's about $3.50) but was curious 🧐.

[SaH] JP on the team vibes; Stef played with a dislocated pinky; CR has another concussion
www.sounderatheart.com João Paulo: ‘I’m here to win’

Sounders midfielder admits the mood in the locker room isn’t great but insists Sounders can turn things around.

João Paulo: ‘I’m here to win’

    > At some point in the match, Frei dislocated his pinkie. He apparently played through the injury and then he and goalkeeping coach Tommy Dutra basically just pushed it back into place after the game.

    > Roldan apparently started feeling [concussion] symptoms after going up for a 5th-minute goal kick and catching a forearm at the base of his neck. Immediately after the collision, Roldan showed some discomfort but nothing that seemed alarming from a distance, but the symptoms only worsened as the match wore on.

NPD: Jinhao 82 (Sailor PGS knockoff)

New pen came today: a Jinhao 82. This is Jinhao's "homage" to the Sailor Pro Gear Slim, released late 2022 I think. I got a medium nib, transparent blue body. Takes a #5 nib, available in EF, F, and M.

Overall the pen seems great. Inked it up with Waterman Mysterious Blue and it writes like a treat. Very smooth nib (I don't have a PGS but they have a reputation for having a good amount of feedback; there is none of that with this nib).

The slight translucency and rich dark blue body combine nicely with the gold trim to make this a really attractive pen. I like slightly smaller pens, and got this one to see if I might like the size of a PGS at some point - this is a great fit for me.

Converter included. There's also an O ring - wondering if this might be amenable to eyedroppering?

For $9 this pen is a terrific deal, and it comes in a ton of different color options. This is definitely going to be in my heavy rotation!

[SaH] Brian Schmetzer promises ‘different team’ after dismal performance in Leagues Cup

    Schmetz:

    > “I don't have a lot,” Schmetzer opened his post-game comments with. “Other than to apologize to the fans that came from Seattle to watch us play. That was not close to our standard. We will try to correct that for our next game against Monterrey.

    > “RSL out-competed us, won second balls [and] our possession was not very good. We weren’t in sync offensively.”

    > “We’ll look at how we’re going to play against Monterrey [and] who’s going to play against Monterrey... We’ll get back up on the horse. There’s competitive guys that understand that we didn’t play up to our standard, and you’ll see a different team on Sunday.”
