Nah, it's been invalidated several times and yet they hopelessly cling to it as if it still meant something. And if some LGBTQ+ friendly film happens to bomb or at least not make that much profit, they will parrot it once again with further gusto.
I thought it was pretty fun and enjoyable. My GF thought it was a bit boring though. Not for everyone surely, and I think it could have been better but still a solid 7/10 by me
Just finished watching it maybe ~2 hours ago. I agree with the 7/10. There were parts that were boring (and imo cringey), but overall it was interesting. Nothing game breaking and could be better, but still a good watch.
It could have done without the car chase Chevy ad, but I thought overall it was far above my expectations. Not surprised it's doing well, the whole movie theatre were laughing out loud.
Well it’s not something I like so what arbitrary metric can I use to dismiss this accomplishment?
Ugh, there's that mean-spirited, "let's assume the worst about people" attitude I hoped we left at reddit.
I'm a cinephile with an interest in film history and I want to know where the new film stands on this list.
If it knocks out Gone With The Wind, that has real implications not just for cinema history, but as an indicator of the health of the movie theater industry.
I also stated that I want to see the film, so assuming I'm trying to "dismiss" it isn't reasonable.
strange that two weeks ago the opening was like 150 mil a giant success, but maybe that just goes to predict or correlate with this number in some way. Giant opening means great buzz, means more sales. etc. guess it worked out. I need to watch it but probably will just do so at home.
I thought it was very mediocre, even disregarding how gross it is as a transparent advertising vehicle that tries to lampshade its intent with a few throwaway lines about capitalism being bad.
It seemed like a cash grab from the trailer and yet you paid to see it in the movie theater, and helped it set a record, which is what this article is about.
The acting and set design and visuals were super well done and I liked how irreverent and tongue and cheek it could be. That said yeah it definitely gives this vibe of "wow heehee look how progressive we are" and the story is kind of all over the place. Overall it was alright and kinda fun but it also had a lot of mixed messages and while it had lines criticizing consumerism and such it is still very blatantly a big multimedia joint venture to sell a ton of stuff.
At the same time I understand that as a child growing up in the US that a lot of our nostalgia and childhood memories are intrinsically intertwined with marketing, IP, and big business. I'm a guy so my barbie experiences were only when I was playing with at the house of a friend who was a girl or a cousin or something, but I know how ingrained in my youth my old gi joe toys, transformers, powerrangers, superhero stuff, and etc is.
