Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have enjoyed considerable success since their respective releases, and while we haven't received any
Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA, reveals that his company, Disney and Lucasfilm have a very strong and close relationship. Although he has not confirmed a third installment, he assures that he would love to do it.
In EA's defence, I think that moment was a turning point for them. That's not to say their games since then have been perfect - they certainly haven't, and most of them don't appeal to me anyway - but I think most of the flaws with their games since then have been developer-related issues rather than anything to do with publisher meddling.
They genuinely have gotten a tad better. Not a lot better, but outside of their sports games they made some significant improvements to their practices.
Oh it's dumber than that. We've had tons of games with Jedi before. 11 years before the Star Wars Jedi series we had it's predecessor, The Force Unleashed. That game, and it's sequel, were freaking dope action-adventure games.
And before that, we had the Knights Of The Old Republic RPGs. There were a bunch of tie-in games for the prequel trilogy. And in the 90s we had the Jedi Knight series on old school windows and Macintosh.
So what happened in that 11 year gap between the action adventure series?
Battlefront.
"Why make games when we can make virtual crack instead?"
As much as I enjoy the series, they need to move away from UE or put a lot more work into optimising their games.
Fallen Order still suffers from traversal stutter and they've somehow made it worse in Survivor. They need to fix their current games before expressing interest in making new ones.
That’s not how capitalism works. You already bought the product, they have your money. You even spent enough time on the game to have an opinion on it, so it’s a win for their engagement metrics as well.
Why invest in fixing a product you have already been paid for if there is no legal obligation to do so, and you can alternatively make another product and get paid again? Star Wars games always sell enough to make them net profits.
I understand and almost completely agree with what you're saying, but there are plenty of developers out there that provide meaningful improvements to their games even after they have your money. For some, it's a labour of love and also a matter of reputation.
This is EA, however, so your point completely stands.
It’s great to see them making more Jedi games rather than something that is more GaaS bs. It feels like the gaming industry is finally finding a middle ground between the two. The PS4/X1 generation really felt like it steered way too hard into live services at the detriment of many studios (BioWare with Anthem, even Arkane with Redfall recently) .
I'm sure they would love to, and now that they're not the only ones who can, I say go for it. But this isn't special or news, EA has always made money on Star Wars games. Obviously some vague statement about wanting to make more, particularly following their latest successful franchise, is to be expected.
My desire to see the exclusive Star Wars license pried out of EA's claws was never because I'd hoped they would never make another one, only that I hoped other studios would get the chance for themselves.
I think we’ll see that now with Ubisoft getting involved. Still blows my mind that BioWare hasn’t made a Star Wars game recently considering they’re responsible for KOTOR (then again who’s still around from them?)
If you want my attention with Star Wars, give me a sequel to the Squadrons games. Play with the formula, set it in the Mandalorian post-empire setting so you can l mix up the fleets instead of just Empire Vs Rebels.
Survivor was a massive disappointment for me. It was the game I bought with my PS5, and ended up quitting halfway through because of the bounty hunter bug.
Waited a month for that to be fixed, fired it up to continue, holomap completely vanished.
So it's back on the backlog again. Thank God the other game I bought with my PS5 (rift apart) was just great.
That's before we get into the navigation somehow being worse than fallen order. No minimap, no compass, and maps that are nigh on impossible to follow
Honestly I would be fine with EA never releasing another star wars game.
survivor is such an amazing game but the performance issues have prevented me from hopping back into it. it's a shame though because the content that is there is legit like 9/10 or 9.5/10 for me.
as someone who doesn't play this, is there a general consensus on the main character design being an exact mirror of his voice/motion actor (Cameron Monaghan), rather than an original design? always been curious
do fans care? are most indifferent to it such as yourself?
i ask mostly out of curiosity but also because personally it would take me out of the game to play as the guy from Shameless and Gotham, running around and swinging a light saber. then again, it is third person so I'd imagine you don't see the face much 🤷🏽
