Landlords: You may not have pets. You may not paint this property, or put up paintings, posters, or hang a TV. This property is pristine and all damages must be paid for.
Also landlords:
- Mr. Bean actually put painstaking effort into protecting everything that shouldn’t be painted, such as the doorknob. This landlord probably just decided to let the occupants chisel free whatever outlets/thermostats/windows/doors they needed. Then later considered the chiseling as damage

Had a landlord paint the inside of my bathtub with white latex paint. Did you know that latex paint is slippery as fuck when wet? Because I fucking do now. I literally bought adhesive grip tape for the bottom of my tub/shower. By the end of my stay ~15 months later, nearly all the paint was chipped away from repeatedly being blasted with hot water and stepped on, revealing the years of hard water limescaling they were trying to cover up. Why fix it when you can cover it and create a serious safety hazard? But of course I had to scrub every spec of every surface before I left or lose my entire deposit.
- And sometimes the old bathtubs, when the enamel is damaged, expose you to lead, so that’s fun.
- You forgot to mention the part where you'd take a bath and come out with all the paint flakes sticking to you.

- Latex is water soluble. Why the fuck would you use that in a shower? Use a coating meat for it. It was probably shitty wall paint too. This isn't a landlord problem, this is just a shitty homeowner problem. As an ex professional journeyman level painter, we used to call this the homeowner special - it's always some dumbfuck bad solution or something wildly inefficient and the worst kind of overkill: ineffective overkill where it would have been cheaper to just replace. I'm having ptsd flashbacks of all the stupid stuff I've seen. I hated being a painter for many reasons. But one of them was that I was exposed to so many stupid, lazy, entitled people from all walks of life and in all kinds of ways. Unfucking people's stupid stuff, stupid cowokers, stupid bosses, stupid companies, stupid clients. Ughhh... I just remember one time being deployed to a site where the lead painter was using a putty knife to skin off all the paint of a peeling paint job on a ralmbler - it was all lead paint, which changes malleability depending on temperature, so he was on a step ladder, chain smoking cigarettes with torn off filters, with no ppe, doing circles around this house FOR DAYS dropping lead paint all over the ground with no safety catches or anything. And the worst part is the pm for the company at the time sold the gonna homeowner on a low cost contract and set into motion an insanely impossible job to do at any quality within budget because that's how competitive the market is and how nobody wants to ever pay for lead abatement because it really is like 10-20x more expensive to do properly and safely.

  I left that job and never went back. I later quit to go back to school and got my bachelor's in software engineering, only to have constant massive layoffs all across the industry and AI and trump come in and spicy diarrhea all over my life.

In case anyone's like me, living in a very old rental conversion, they make replica door hardware that you can buy. I had to replace a couple of door handles and other hardware due to wear and found the replicas were an affordable drop-in replacement
- My parents renovated their kitchen and somehow matched cabinet handles that were original to the house that was built like 30 years prior. Crazy.

  Is it cheaper? I feel like whenever I get paint, I pay for the can, which is then mixed with any color I want. I wanted to buy it once without color added, and they told me it won't look right. I still had to pick a white from a card anyway.

Frankly there's a good chance the paint job was the idea of a realtor. They LOVE painting everything white because apparently that's the color that sells best. Fuck your hundred-year-old brickwork. "It's a blank canvas!"

  Something tells me you aren't a realtor. It's like the reason most cars in America are black, white or gray/silver. It's because those are the colors most people who come in looking for a specific color that's not there will settle for if they get a good deal. So dealers stock mostly those colors. But an economist or business analyst just looking at the data would probably call this "demand".

Landlords suck of course, but real question: could the paint have acted as a kind of preservative for the wood and metal beneath?
- If it was quality paint, perhaps. But you know a landlord is gonna go for the cheapest shit that'll streak and run and chip like crazy leaving it an ugly mess that doesn't protect anything.

I rented a place that had a really bad mold problem in the bathroom. We tried cleaning it but it kept coming back, it was clear it was deep in the sheetrock and baseboards (which were also rotting). I told the landlord again and again about it and he kept promising that he was planning on refurbishing it and taking care of everything.
Well, one day he finally shows up with a big bucket of paint and just paints over everything. Didn't even bother scraping off the old paint. That was my final sign to move. Just ridiculous he thought that would solve anything.
- We had a similar problem with an upstairs bathroom. We ran the fan constantly, but still mold was everywhere. You could see where it was painted over in the past with a different color paint. The owner's handyman friend decided that replacing the fan would help. When he was removing the old one, we realized that there was no ductwork attached to it. The fan was just sucking all humid air into the space on the other side of the bathroom ceiling.

  Not sure, but I doubt it. Whatever he used, it wasn't supposed to be in a bathroom. I moved out a month later and the paint was ALREADY warping and falling off in places from the humidity of, you know, a bathroom.

That’s some good looking wood under there. I do not understand why people paint hardware.

This reminds me of the weird partial cabinet around my gas meter that came with the house 18 years ago. The paint is the only thing holding it together and I’d need a real carpenter to replace it.

Everyone is like:

I'll do one phrase that just encompasses everything:
"Ban Capitalism"

- I like the idea of making capitalism unnecessary through automation. Eliminate jobs, eliminate customers, eliminate profits. Make the system produce what we need all by itself. The rich have a similar system already, they call it passive income - set up some deals and money starts flowing to you all by itself. We can do the same with everything - passive prosperity.

I stripped all the paint off the oak moldings and doors in an old apartment I lived in. It took a while but it was worth it. The building sold eventually and we moved but it was so beautiful.

I have to say that I've seen this same level of effort on the left from homeowners.
So while landlords should be banned (not just from painting, but from existing, especially as they are permitted to operate today), the "paint everything" is an idiot owner problem that is not landlord exclusive.
- Yep, all the (original) doors and hardware in my house have been painted over. So many layers of paint. Unfortunately they have also had stuff screwed in, nailed in, have been drilled through for various additional hardware, etc. so they can’t really be refinished to be restored..
  I’m repainting them and changing the hardware out completely (it’s the old style inset locking mechanisms, so limited options), but that’s all I can do without replacing the doors themselves.
  
  As someone who has dealt with this (including taking the original hardware, ordering replacement cover plates and misc gears, cleaning and polishing everything, greasing, etc).....
  Replace the door, it will save you a lot of misery.
  If its for a front door, replace everything, frame included, and get a nice insulated assembly.
  YMMV. My mileage was horrible. Do not recommend.

I can't close the AC vent in my bedroom because the little handle has been snapped off and entirely painted over so I can't even use a tool to move the fucking thing, which sucks because it's getting closer to summer and someone keeps turning the fucking heater on. 😬

- Sometimes, you can get a screwdriver or something similar to move the vent slats more open or closed depending on how it's made.

You're blaming landlords/homeowners? Just blame lazy humans as a given and be done.
I've bought a house nearly 80 years old and the poor girl has had so much paint put on it, if it was makeup, it would be a rubber mask.
And it was done by tennants! Not the landlords, not the owners, the tennants! The answer was putting on a fresh coat of paint every year. And preferably in different colour from the previous.
The result was a mess of a house I bought for a really low price but needing a ton of love and maintenance. With 80 years old prime woods covered with paint that never belonged there to begin with.

Went from "oh no!" to "oh WOW!"

When I got my house the basement had some what I assumed was gross looking tan colour painted over everything.
I was wrong. Everything. Trim, electrical sockets, ceiling, walls, doors, knobs...everything... All of it was painted in the same gross muted Rose colour that I could only distinguish once I started painting over it.

Might as well be tenants, of the last two places I rented one landlord redid the whole bathroom because of a few mold spots and the other one repainted everything white between tenants, making sure to remove everything they could from the walls and taping everything that shouldn't be painted...
But when you don't own the place anyway? Why bother, paint everything, not your problem.

You don't have to be a landlord to be a moron or not a good caretaker of your space.
Look at your floor. Can you see dirt visibly on it? 🤷. I'm judging you way more for that than having a painted door.

  If they did it and I saw it (or knew they did it), yeah I suppose. Only short term though.
- Yes, I blame my dog for being a messy eater who is resistant to my efforts to get him to use a place mat. He keeps grabbing a mouthful of food, walking over to the carpet, dropping the food, then eating off the carpet.
  Happily, our carpets are washable. I just don't wash them every time I feed the dog.

It looks very modern. Like HGTV but it probably won't collapse in a year
