If you're old enough to drink (edit: I hit send on this and then immediately thought 'well if they can rent a uhaul they're probably at least 25...' lmao) - hit a bar. Sit down AT the bar and just chat up the bartender/any interested parties also chilling. A simple excited "I just moved here! Any suggestions for must-do things/places to eat/shop/etc?" will do the trick and may even make you some friends.

Guarantee you that at least one person in the bar will hear this and go "oh my god congrats!! you should try x, y, and z" and will likely cause someone else in the bar to hear & go "oh you haven't been to X yet?? you NEED to go there instead of what they said!"

Drive to the dollar general?

Find a hike. Take a walk on public lands. Stargaze at night. Find a cool tree. Get a bike and explore your new town. Pack a lunch and have a picnic. Have a backyard? Plant a garden.

Start saying yes to people's invites, using good judgment of course. Get to know people, neighbors, coworkers, other people

Hobbies are a great way to meet people as you already have similar interests.

I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest looking into local leftist orgs (just search "[city] socialist orgs" and see what comes up). If you're on social media, I've noticed The Algorithm starts suggesting new ones after you follow a couple. Most will have regular intro events - try a few out and see what you like!

More importantly, though - what do you like to do? Is there stuff that you'd like to try? What's important to you? Where do you want to be in... six months? A year?

Some general suggestions from recent experience:

• Get documents in order. File change-of-address with your old state's DMV.
• If you own a vehicle, let your insurance company know, and register it with new state's DMV as soon as possible. This avoids harassment from locals and paperwork pain+fees later on.
• Change-of-address everything. Banks, credit cards, insurance agency, Vanguard/401k, mobile phone telcoms, brainstorm everything. Remember this will change your billing address on the credit card, so update any online payments/subscriptions too.
• Sign up for USPS mail forwarding so it catches any shit you forget, it's like $2 for a year and a little more to extend multiple years but it's worth it.
• Before it expires, transfer your driver's license to the new state. It is much easier and cheaper when still valid.
• Same thing for any benefits - look up for your specific state what you need to do to re-apply for any low income benefits you may qualify for. Make sure you end any claims from the old state when you're supposed to. Not because I believe in that bootlicker shit, but because fraud accusations will make your life annoying.
• Voter registration, if that's your thing. Keep opsec in mind as voter rolls are public.

Just a brainstorm list, hopefully at least one of them saves you some trouble! If you're able and looking for work, I like the LinkedIn jobs section more than craigslist/indeed/etc as employers there are generally more legit (as legit as it can be under capitalsim...). This may not apply to very rural areas though.

I’ve had to go to many different towns for work in my life. What I generally like to do is go for a few jogs and check out all the local bars. I pick the one I like best and play pool and make friends with the locals. By the time I got a good friend base it’s time to move on to the next job! But it’s good to get yourself out there and make friends so you don’t get lazy or lonely.

Definitely explore a little so you know what's around you, then find some stuff to keep busy as best you can.
