NaNoWriMo Goes Bankrupt After Embracing AI

this was how I learned there was a nanowrimo non-profit, I thought it was just a thing people did

- Yeah like what support would they give me if I decided to write a novel in November(also one month doesn't seem like long enough to polish off a full novel lol), or are they just promoting the general concept?
  edit: seems like they did run a few useful programs(like loaning laptops but they hadn't done that since 2009) but not in over a decade it seems, it looks to be mainly a website and forum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Novel_Writing_Month they must have been paying employees salaries, cause you wouldn't need that many donations would cover hosting for a good while

  The concept is basically just trying to hit 50K words in a month as an exercise. Like not worrying about editing or quality, just getting something down everyday. I actually think it's pretty useful, even though I've only done it once.
  I really don't know how or why the silly writing challenge was an organization with employees, though.

Part of me is sad to see this go, I knew a lot of creative people who took NaNoWriMo as a good time to just write something, but holy shit, I hadn't realized how deep down the hole they actually were.

- the line of thinking is probably something along the lines of AI being more "inclusive" because all you need is to produce some text for the AI to then generate into art. people who are e.g. quadriplegics would be able to "make art" through AI and speech-to-text that they otherwise couldn't. so being anti-AI would mean you're essentially advocating for the removal of some peoples' capability to participate in creating art.
  not a great argument imo, but I'm not physically disabled so I don't really have a skin in this particular game

TBH, a literature nonprofit that embraced AI probably did it because they were already having trouble staying afloat. "Let's fire a bunch of writers and replace them with ChatGPT" is not something successful organizations tend to do.
- It's also not what happened. This case is sad enough as it is. No need to make things up about it.

I've attempted nanowrimo a few times (under my real name so no link) and a bunch of people in my family are big fans of it, if the company dies then good riddance but hopefully there's some kind of grassroots replacement that springs up.
