Voting doesn't always mean you 100% agree with the party you are voting for. Sometimes it means that you vote for the least bad option to prevent system collapse. I say this as a South African whose only voting goal for years was to prevent the ANC from getting a sufficiently high majority to be able to change the constitution. We came insanely close a few times but made it through.
Not voting in the US election was a choice, a choice not to stand against Trump. So anyone who didn't think Trump was bad enough to vote against, doesn't get to blame the GOP for what's happening.
All that is needed for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing.

AND then consider how Joe Biden is coming back from the brink of death by saying that he and Jill will build back the Democratic party, thinking that people will forget how Biden shot down Bernie's chances in 2020 or how he said he'd be a single term president, waiting until the first presidential debate with Trump months before the election to show just how fucking incompetent he is.
Maybe more people abstained from this election because the two biggest parties didn't look any different, so who cares about the outcome!

The situation with literacy in the USA does more to reveal exactly where and what we are far better than any other arguments about our wealth and society. We have a really big fucking problem here.
21% of adults in this country are FUNCTIONALLY ILLITERATE. This is mind-melting for the "richest nation on Earth." We have nearly a quarter of our population who know how read words as necessary to survive but cannot string together text to form coherent narratives or even pictures in their heads. They can text with emojis and monosyllables but are deeply insecure about not being able to comprehend longer paragraphs and as a result rage against notions of logic and reason and fact-checking. This is what functional illiteracy means and we've all encountered it, and this is where much of our science-denial and irrational beliefs are coming from.

Honestly, I don't think it's that important or helpful.
If you have conservative friends and feel the desire to try to engage and debate with them, you would be served a lot better by making an actual effort, understanding their positions and giving them all the rope they need. From there, addressing their specific worries and concerns and asking a lot of questions about why they have the concerns and fears they have... and it's all fears, all the way down. They don't care about facts, they have strong emotions that they can't regulate and their brains latch onto any story to explain their feelings. Engage with the feelings and you can change them.
I have changed more hearts and minds than I can remember doing this, it's not easy but you can change these simple people if you have the patience and energy. Human beings as a group are like locusts, a scourge upon the earth, a fluid that moves to the lowest places. But as individuals? Individual people are largely easy to influence and change, especially conservatives who only hold their positions because of fear of something.
Not saying that it's not enjoyable and effective to make fun of the chuds with memes, but let's all be honest that these memes and jokes are here for us to laugh over and feel catharsis from. If we all actually wanted a better world we would be marching in-mass on washington, arms locked with conservatives whom we have talked to and appealed to their emotions enough that they realized that they can be a part of a better group with a better identity. These people are dumber than dirt, you will get further with them with pity than you will with scorn. I know most people aren't equipped for this, and I was because I was a self-defense teacher, a public speaker and used to debate right-wing people daily. If you're anxious and/or non-social, don't get yourself stressed even trying this until you get more experience.

A lot of Rep voters approve of Project 2025. His approval isn't that low. Approval of certain policies, like tarriffs are low, but overall approval isn't. What's scary is his most evil policies (the immigration policies) have some of the highest approval.

I do discuss and argue with unlike minded people. I just do not do so with MAGA people.
Not because I think MAGA are hopeless, there might be a very very small portion of them that is swayable back to sanity via discussion. I refuse to talk to them and advocate more people do the same because I think doing so legitimately does more harm than good on average. For every MAGA you convert to moderation you further legitimize the beliefs in 99 other MAGA by engaging with them in good faith and even put your own safety at risk on multiple levels.
Admittedly, I also legitimately really fucking hate them. I'd be lying if there wasn't a void in me that couldn't be filled with MAGA people suffering or even dying at this point. The antipathy I feel is extraordinarily and irrationally intense.

It's not so black and white. Hear me out: I'm strong against the MAGAs and not impressed with the reps either but I've been noticing something interesting happening:
I think there's a difference between people who voted republican (conservatives) who legitimately believed a lie or just saw what they wanted to see(single issue voters) and MAGA who knew it was a lie and deeply corrupt.
You can see more refined polarizing on the level of what is happening right now on the judiciary branch. It is Republican judges that are holding Trump at bay in the crazy executive orders and illegal and constitutional crisis at the moment.
These judges were Republicans appointed by Bush.
And it's the MAGAs that are screaming "DEM JUDGES" without first checking the flags on their trojan horse before doing so. Which is really just outing themselves to the republican voting base. I think the republicans are realizing they were a shill. and yes, i am with you that they shouldn't be all "leopards ate my face" about it and so much of that is that they were complacent while the MAGAs were making open insults to minorities right in front of them.
That said, I think icing them out is not useful. I'm liking how the Dems are stepping up in the ruby red states and flipping seats. They are not icing them out and instead, using the strength of vote. Cuz yeah: republicans do vote. They just need to be led. at this point it's to be lead away from their own slaughter and detriment and lessening the impact of damage that this caused(for everyone). Cuz like it or not, their votes do change the tide along with the Dems who vote.
There's also those who whine but refuse to vote over casual excuses that hopefully this is a wakeup call for. I still hate them more deeply than anyone else for this happening. Well maybe on par with how much I hate MAGATs who spew pure toxicity at anyone who gets in their way of blindly "hurting libs" to everyone's detriment. Cuz sitting by and expecting everyone to save their asses while they doomglare about everything and take up space is passing their self burdening as someone else's problem.

I honestly don't think we should differentiate. Republican leadership in the house and senate have done nothing to stand against Trump and MAGA, and have completely facilitated this mess. Differentiating between "MAGA" and "Republicans" just gives them an out later. MAGA is Republican, and Republicans are MAGA, at least at the policy level.
The Republican party needs a dramatic shift away from utterly insane and corrupt politics and behavior, and that's only going to happen with a heavy amount of pressure from their base and elsewhere. They don't deserve leniency in this.

It's already too late for it to matter. At the first whimpering of complaints from some tiny minority of Republican voters they just stopped showing up to their own town halls.
Every R in an elected position is complicit at best and full throated supporting at worst (and for that matter so is every R in my circle of family and friends - no surprise given his 92% favorability rating with Republicans), and elected R representatives no longer even care about the opinions of their base unless they are from the ones still drinking the flavor aid.

People are knee-jerk responding to you for a few reasons, but the heart of what you're getting at needs to be understood a lot better in echo-chambers like Lemmy. (Yes, it is an echo-chamber guys, take a breath before attacking.)
We surround ourselves with all these memes and stories about leopards eating faces, about regret and republicans being booed at town-hall meetings and all these stories about Teslas being torched, and it gives us a really, really fucking biased perspective of the state of this administration. I wish you all would go out of these spaces more and listen to what people are saying, look at the echo-chambers the other side is using, look at the middle-ground like AP and Reuters, listen to the stale analysts give their less sensational takes.
We're not phasing them guys. We're not winning. We're not going to sit here smug as we watch the fourth reich burn. They are succeeding at their plans.
We need a lot more people a lot more worried that we're going to lose the entire fucking country and that this isn't some inept president and his muppet sidekick who will be laughed at in history books, they are successfully dismantling our greatest military and economic alliances the world has ever seen, an age of prosperity and peace about to be wrecked for no other reason than to maintain the wealth of a few. The heart of what that comment says is that America approves of this coup, which is literally the opposite of what you're pushing. There's no need to lie about very clear polls showing negative public opinion.
I don't think anyone here is under the illusion that negative polls alone will stop the dismantling of America but it shows that the sentiment is much broader than just our echo chamber.
Anecdotally, I've seen more vocal opposition than ever in traditionally neutral/conservative spaces (sports communities, the workplace, bars, etc...). The sentiment is there, people are worried, it just needs to be directed.
