Happy to be here! I love finding alternative platforms to the big ones, I'm a forum nerd and soon I'm thinking about moving one from phpBB 3 to either Discourse or Node.bb and having it join ActivityPub. I hope more people will join lemmy soon!
That would be cool!
happy to be here~~
One more sailor on your ship of freedom! I hope I can bring something useful too
Hello!
BuT WherES aLL My KaRMA?!? /s
fucking happy to be here!
Maybe I'll updoot, maybe I'll downdoot who knows? You don't have to worry about internet points here
Here. You've got four of it.
Welcome. I think you will like it here. We're kind of like reddit except we aren't trying to make money from you, or your content. And we are more likely to follow the golden rule. And swear. Lots of swearing.
and we don't limit or kill 3rd party app support, but rather support them, and even have a page about apps for lemmy which are, 3rd party
Welcome to the fediverse everyone
It's like our own Reddit but with blackjack and hookers
and without fascist rules like banned keywords nazi Luigi etc, fuck reddit
DOZENNNNNSSSSSS
Welcome everyone!
Dont stress about which instance you join. Took me 3 tries before I found the one I like, but I was able to see most of the stuff from each one.
What made you decide on a tankie instance?
Be mindful of the smug "Lemmy Culture" hipsters, they'll eventually weed themselves out or self segregate though as more normies flow in.
I welcome the masses.
If you want lemmy to look like the comments under any post on /r/funny then why even come here. Those users can go to threads or something
nazis can stay the fuck out, though.
That's right! Don't be coming in here and bringing no f****** culture.
Same!
glad to be here!
Hey, does anyone know when a new user can upload an avatar? I’m still being denied.
I believe its a instance setting so it could be different then mine, but I couldn't upload for a few weeks on .ml
It take a few week on Lemm.ee IIRC. Most people wait for a bit, if that's really important for you you can have a look at https://lemmy.zip/.
You can export and import your settings from your settings account using the default UI
How come theres been an influx of users recently? Did reddit shit the bed again?
say luigi and get warned
what did luigi do to you, reddit?
I got a warning today about upvoting violence. The only thing I have upvoted in the last little while is pro-Canada stuff like elbows up. If that gets me kicked off Reddit then fuck them and fuck spez the little pig boy.
I was just assuming it was all the censorship because any post with Luigi automatically gets deleted for violence even in the Nintendo subreddits talking about Luigi's Mansion
For some people, Trump has shit the bed (invasion threats, trade wars etc) and has stimulated a number of people to move away from US-controlled services and products.
For me I left Reddit recently and switched because Reddit made a change that broke the Boost app.
Yes they started banning thousands of active users for “inciting violence” if you say things like “fuck Elon musk” or “my favorite character in super Mario bros is Luigi”
Reddit recently started doubling down on far-right actions. Like making it so you can be banned for just upvoting a post that breaks the rules, or banning you for saying the name "Luigi."
Personally, I recently got permabanned for being truthful about fascists.
Dozens? More.
This is my first post, on my first day here, and it feels pretty good.
Here, have some beans.
We don't do pay-a-social-media-ceo-to-win around here, we do beans. Practical, eatable, 100% all natural digital beans.
Some other users may be able to gift you a proper lemmy kilmister commerative gold token, but I don't have the jpg.
EDIT: oh right, a possibly useful warning:
About a month or two ago, lemmy seems to have attracted its first mass spam bot, dming thousands of users with basically a phising email.
If you get a message from 'Fediverse Chick', that's not her, someone stole her image, just block the user.
Or come discussing her at !nicole@feddit.org
Welcome!!
It’s kind of a rush picking a username knowing most are still available.
UltraGiGaGigantic2 is still available
Nicknames are per instance so your favourites are always available somewhere.
and the best part is that if a name is taken on one instance you can just try another!
So tasty names still available
(There always will be many good names available since every name can exist once on every instance)
The tankies have been notified. I expect you will receive a proper welcoming in the not so distant future.
Oh god, oh no. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife...
Welcome in.
Can some people who are willing to post something other than American politics and Reddit bashing posts join lemmy soon, I'm sick of my entire feed being nothing but all these negative topics
You could either block a few communities or make your following feed your main one. I prefer the first case as it allow community with less trafic to reach the top of the page.
There is a lot animal pictures, some fantasy genre conversation and plenty of renewable energie discussion somewhere hidden behind the very detailled and commented biographie of the trump/musk duo.
Have you considered making the world less negative?
Big things are happening in the world right now. I know that it sucks.
I think Lemmy is a bit too complicated to attract the kind of light-hearted users that made Reddit shine. It's daunting unless you have nowhere else to go.
False we have :
!animalswithjobs@lemmy.world
!crows@lemmy.ml
!lemmybewholesome@lemmy.world
!TwoGoobers@lemm.ee
!taneggs@lemmy.ca
!relationshipmemes@lemmyis.fun
!bats@lemmy.world
!Dullsters@dullsters.net
!bun_alert_system@lemmy.sdf.org
!hydrohomies@lemmy.ml
!nolawns@slrpnk.net
!foraging@lemm.ee
!succulents@midwest.social
!houseplants@manyplace
!zombiesurvival@sopuli.xyz
!vampires@lemmy.zip
And we might get a revival of !frogs@lemmy.blahaj.zone
All this is news and linux free. Enjoy!
Idk, I came here with no idea about the instance system, I joined one that was near the top of the list, realised it was entirely Tankies, and made an account on the instance this account is on. I think people are likely to have a similar experience.
Hear about Lemmy -> join one of the first instances they see -> realise how things actually work -> make an account on an instance that's properly researched and more aligned with the person
People on
Seem to be doing fine.
There is a pinned post with non-political communities on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca
Use an app with filter lists. Add american political terms to filter. Experience gets muuuuuch better.
You can also block certain users who post in a certain way.
Feel free to practice blocking users on me.
For those of us using Firefox there was a post on !youshouldknow@lemmy.world on how you can use uBlock Origin to create word filters.
To do so, open up the uBlock Origin dashboard, go to the ‘My filters’ tab, and add this filter:
lemmy.world##article.row:has-text(/word1|word2|word3|word4/i)
For example:
lemmy.world##article.row:has-text(/Trump|Elon|Musk|nazi/i)
Blocking all of the political and news communities can help
!communitypromo@lemmy.ca has a pinned post without active non political communities
I had a discussion the other day, where people were not happy with lemmy instances not handing data over to google. They argument was that we should do everything so lemmy can be found more easily, as the only goal is to "win" against reddit.
Unfortunately in that discussion people were not interested in using Lemmy and the Fediverse at large to create a positive vision of the internet. They just wanted to stick it to one corporation they don't like. I don't like reddit either, but i think we should thrive for a Fediverse that upholds decentralization, open source and non commercialization of social interactions. All the large Internet corporations want to create the opposite and have been quite successful so far.
I agree with you. It’s short sighted to give in to a separate corporation to “beat” the first. The only way to beat Reddit is to stop using it and forget about it.
The goal should be to remove the ability for a single entity to control the public flow of discourse.
I’m off to buy a Lemmy sticker to put on my thinkpad
They will come, and they will go. Let them.
More Star Trek memes!
Star trek is very political lol
Right there with you, it’s going to be a long four years…
Just block the subs. Or subscribe to communities that interest you and stick to your subscribed feed.
Hi :) it's a niche community but I'm doing what I can
I'm loving it already! And...I'm not scrolling through ads too!!
Back with the API fiasco is when I stopped using Reddit because there's no way I'm using the official app with the amount of ads there are
Every time I end up on Reddit the amount of ads makes me recoil. You’re free now!
Reddit has ads? I use Librewolf/Firefox with uBlock so I didn't notice, lmao.
Dozens of dozens of dozens of dozens of dozens... 112,744 to be inexact...
Lemmy Total Users by Day: 1,352,936 for 3/12/25.
Divided by 12, that's 112,744 and some change... probably a couple of baker's dozens in there....
Looks like ~53k monthly active users, I think that's a better stat, since it doesn't include people making new alts and abandoning their old accounts.
Then that's 4,416 dozen, give or take a baker.
But all in all, I'd say that lemmings are much more active than Redditors - just based on responses to my posts and comments. I've earned 15k karma on this account, far more than any of my vastly older reddit accounts. Take that for what you will, but I've personally found the community here much more active, especially as of late.
Content quality is drastically better too.
If anyones looking for chill communities to sub to, here's a fat ol list https://lemmy.world/post/16327122
Hey fellow redfugees!
Welcome! It's nice and comfy here, if a little less of an infinite content-hose compared to Reddit. You might need to do a little more heavy lifting yourself in terms of posting and commenting, but on the plus side - people actually read what you post, instead of being drowned by a deluge of spam and bots! And discussions are mostly friendly and civil!
I kind of like that we have to choose to participate to make this work. Sharing something might actually be worthwhile. I’ve had my fair share of viral posts in my day, but posting hasn’t been a priority of mine since before the days of Lord Gallowboob.
It’s refreshing to be in an actual community.
I kinda like that it's smaller here in terms of content and users. I left reddit back at the API thing, I'd been on there over ten years and was spending easily an hour or two a day on there. Here, I pop in, check it out, get a similar experience - but I don't get stuck in endless scrolling or stupid arguments. Instead I'm reading more books.
And it also actively prevents doomscrolling when you see the same post multiple times.
Yes that's what I've found! There's less of it but the quality is far better, the atmosphere is far better and it's like reddit used to be years ago. I've missed all that and I'm so glad I found lemmy. ☺️
I prefer redxiter.
Dozens+1 ! :)
Welcome and dont forget to tip your local server administrators. Servers are not free.
Keep it away from corporations by donating today. :)
Lemmy and Mastodon are like "PBS" social media.
"This is brought to you by people like you."
Welcome friend! I've been keeping your seat warm * mini-fart *
Just be warned, those dozens are all actually one person.
It's me. I just enjoy talking to myself so much I made lemmy
does that mean you’re also @Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com🫨
Yes, but only on Fridays; there's another me that takes the rest of the week
Hey me, it's you!
Well, I didn’t expect us to have an existential crisis today, but here we are.
That's okay, we'll get past it again
He is I and I am him
Slim with the tilted brim, what's my motherfuckin' name?
za-ba-do-hiiiiii-hi-hi
what’s my motherfuckin’ name
Excuse us?? It's OUR motherfuckin' name too!
I have several personalities, so I guess you can say there’s dozens of us.
It took every person on this platform to get us to 600. Bots I'm calling on your power.
Welcome to Lemmy. Here's your Molotov, the guillotine is just down the hall. First left.
we are legion squad.
Showed as white on white on my UI, so here's the picture below.
A few pointers for new joiners:
White theme? Oh god, how do you not... you know...
Is there a reason why you're promoting !ask@lemm.ee now? Ask Lemmy communities already exist on both .world and .ml, creating another community seems kinda counterproductive to me.
Feel free to have a look at !fedigrow@lemm.ee
Yeah, shows my image editing fu. Thanks for pointers! I did do a search but turned out my fu is not particularly strong there either...
This is perfect tho, it outs light mode creatures as the monsters they are. /j
No worries, thank you for this post, it's nice to welcome people from Reddit!
Reporting for duty.
steve holt!!
I wont survive without reddit.... I am so dead....
Lemmy fills the itch for me. The only thing it is missing are certain niche communities populated. Maybe some day.
Hope you find your place, even if it isn't here.
Thanks, sigh yeah...I hope I do
I've been here since the API exodus. I still go on reddit sometimes but found myself frequenting Lemmy a lot more. It's just better and the slow growing is quite noticeable. Gone were the days where you were always checking for new posts.
Wish I could say the same I just want to die...
