Redundant/false acronyms just irk me a little.
They can work and be unidentified. There's no contradictions.
How does a society build a thing it can't identify?
It doesn't have to be unidentified by the makers. You just need to not be able to identify it.
Zeta reticulians drop off dope craft. Wtf are these damn things‽ Antimatter annihilation engine turns over nicely and hums along.
"Nice, I've identified this thing as an alien motor that we don't completely understand but which we know how to utilize."
We don't really know how gravity works, yet we understand it well enough to utilize it.
