Back at it again this time with another top 3 hexbear favorites: this time your top 3 favorite anime games.
For me:
Super Robot Wars (Gameboy)
Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Holy Demon War (Mouthful, PS2)
Gundam Battle Assault (PSX)
I love Super Robot Wars, it's the perfect you got peanut butter in my chocolate game. It mixes a dozen different giant mecha ips into a tactical roleplaying game.
Berserk on the ps2 is awesome. It takes the musou formula but imo makes it something much more engaging, plus it faithfully retells the best arc of the manga.
GBA is a great 2D fighter by natsume, carries on the tradition of the gundam wing game for the super famicom but this time on a 32bit system.
Blasphemy, Gundam Battle Assault 2 has all the main G-Gundam cast in a fighting game!
Is that newish Berserk musou game any good?
Rankings for me:
Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front (PS2) - Rainbox Six style tactical shooter, Gundam edition!
.hack//(INFECTION/MUTATION/OUTBREAK/QUARANTINE) (PS2) - These aged like trash, gameplay-wise, but they were super cool for their time. Great execution for a multimedia franchise
Robotech: Battlecry (PS2, XBOX, GC) - They nailed the art style and the game was pretty fun, even if it's got the Harmony Gold stink on it
Shoutout to the mishmash of all the weird Japan-only anime tie-in ROMs I played in the mid-2000s: Magic Knight Rayearth (SFC/SNES), Sailor Moon (Sega Genesis), Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (SFC/SNES) come to mind, but I'm sure there's others
Also, shoutout to Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, which nails the anime OP aesthetic with its attract mode
From what I remember, the reviews around the Berserk musou game were kinda mid, but the game journalism industry tends to hate on the subgenre so idk. The latest One Piece musou game is supposed to be very good though
I still suck at the game as an adult lol. It works with the source material for me in the same way sucking at TIE Fighter does - bad guys punching in the clock to get wrecked
Not sure if it counts but Persona 4 (despite its faults). Kickass music, the villain and the first suspect are both fashy chanbrains, and there’s a bit of wish fulfillment in being able to have and make friends
Obligatory Dragon Ball drop, but I like Xenoverse 2.
Had fun with Pokemon yellow as a kid. Even though I just copy/pasted red’s team from hgss because I wanted to role play as red.
I love XV2 for the fanservice slop but I'm also mark for dragon ball. My main complaint is the terrible monetization and nickle-and-diming of character & move expansions but that was mostly before I learned how easily you can mod stuff in and not get banned.
