You have to first capture the internet in the loop, and then it just travels around in the router forever.

Except all packets have a TTL, so probably not very long.

you (yes, you in particular) are the reason why STP was invented.
I would normally suggest that this is more "networking porn", but its just way too fetishistic for regular consumption. you animal!

I love that you can plug a switch into itself that essentially causes a data short circuit of the switch talking to itself without realising it.
26 2 ReplyUnless the switch has STP enabled.
The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol that builds a loop-free logical topology for Ethernet networks.
23 0 ReplyWhy is the switch talking to itself? Is it stupid??
19 0 ReplySwitches are kind of stupid from a hardware perspective. A basic switch just has a lookup table that has all the connected devices and if it can't find the destination address in the switch sends it out on all ports. There are protocols to handle this but they add overhead and are only available on higher end devices.
You can imagine what kind of chaos this could cause

Wouldn't something like spanning-tree just down all ports on this?
16 0 ReplyYes.
8 0 ReplyIf it’s present, and loop guard is enabled, it would block the ports. This looks like an unmanaged switch so probably doesn’t have that feature.
Most of Netgear’s managed switch range have a loop guard function, even if they don’t do full STP.

Would be a shame if someone plugged this into a school network :)
13 0 ReplyThat would be a great way to piss off the school

Is this what they call the loopback interface?
12 0 ReplyYeah pretty much
127.0.0.1->127.0.0.2....... 127.0.0.254-> 127.0.0.1

Would the switch do anything here? Wouldn't there need to be something else plugged in? Like a laptop or pc?
8 0 ReplyThis is knot funny. Someone needs to ping the mods!
5 0 Replyttl=255
5 0 ReplyIt doesnt even matter, TTL is only decreased when routing. Ethernet frames have no such concept.
16 0 ReplyTil. I thought switches would decrement ttl but that makes perfect sense.

Ah broadcast storms. The best kind of storms.
