Why would anyone need to know the time besides when to plant? Give me a good star based calendar any night of the week.
Anything other than day and night and the changing of the seasons is new-fangled and useless.
I’m sure you’re joking, but finding the position of the sun is (or was) important for navigation too. Vikings used to use crystals to locate the sun when it was cloudy
