I'm not sure how this is surprising anyone at all, honestly.
The problem (but not for Bethesda) is that we are so used to mods that we seem to forget how absolutely shite a lot of their vanilla UI is. Has everybody forgotten the Skyrim map? Coz I sure as shit have not.
Did they somehow miraculously fix it all in Fallout 4? Genuine question, I kinda gave up on them after Skyrim.
The fallout 4 map is basically the same as the fallout 3 and new vegas map, and now that I think about it oblivion. So this is verry much a two steps forward one step back situation.
I don't think you're supposed to use it the way you used the Skyrim/Fallout map. It's frustrating to use it to try to plan your walking route, like you would in Skyrim looking for the road that winds up a mountain. Space is huge and planets are huge and mostly empty. You're not supposed to be looking for the path to anything. Once I stopped using it that way, it clicked. I explore the local area around a discovered location with my eyes and scanner. If I'm trying to get to a discovered location, I use the surface map to see the missions for each location so i can pick one to fast travel to. You can even fast travel right from the scanner (i.e. the auto-hide compass). For navigating around the settlements, like New Atlantis, I use the arrow guides in the scanner (i.e. Clairvoyance). The floor plan of The Well, for example, is so complicated with different levels. Switching levels and figuring out staircases and elevators on a map would be a big hassle. I'm early on, about 10 hours in, but that's my hot take on the surface map.
The one place I need a map is the confusing ass labyrinths that are the dungeons. My only complaint about the gameplay so far is the dungeon layouts are nonsensical and confusing. I actually have to use the scanner to find a way through everything.
